Kobe Bryant Addresses Media

Kobe Bryant addressed assembled media members after practice to discuss how far along he is in his rehab process, what type of physical activity he’s been able to do thus far and the challenges of staying disciplined as he continues to work his way back from injury. Below is a video and transcription of his comments:

Q: On if he did any acupuncture as seen on his Instagram:
Bryant: Yeah. It’s part of the process. They do it every time so after the injection, they do a little acupuncture.

Q: On if doing acupuncture changes how he approaches his rehab process:
Bryant: No, I’m starting to move a little more, particularly on the AlterG (anti-gravity) treadmill. I’m starting to pick up my pace more. I’m not where I was the first time I had the procedure done the first time in terms of being able to run as much, but I can do some things.

Q: On what percentage he’s running at on the AlterG (anti-gravity) treadmill:
Bryant: 100 percent.

Q: On if he’s tested his Achilles:
Bryant: I do a lot of calf raises during the day, trying to get it as strong as possible, constantly pushing the flexibility of it and the mobility.

Q: On if he’s done any jumping:
Bryant: A little bit, a little bit. Nothing too explosive, but a little bit of jumping.

Q: On if he’s happy where he’s at or frustrated:
Bryant: I’ll be happy when I can get there on the floor and do what I do best. All of this right now is a process to get to that point.

Q: On the next step in his rehab:
Bryant: It’s the explosiveness, the explosiveness, and the muscle endurance, which takes a little time and I have to get my fat ass in shape, too. It’s been six months of just eating whatever the hell I wanted to eat, not running and stuff like that has caught up to me a little bit. So I have to get in shape.

Q: On how long it’ll take him to get back in shape:
Bryant: I do it in about three weeks. Three weeks of rigorous conditioning does it for me.

Q: On if he’ll play until he’s in shape:
Bryant: No, because that’s when you get hurt, going out there and doing that stuff. That’s the process I’ve always been on – three strong weeks of pushing the stamina. I have the green light now to be able to do that, but it’s a matter of having the flexibility and strength to run at high speeds out here on the court or track or whatever.

Q: On a timeline for his return and whether opening day is a possibility:
Bryant: I didn’t say anything. I just keep it all open right now. I don’t’ know why you guys are so hell bent on timelines. When I’m ready, I’m ready.

Q: On if he experienced any discomfort or soreness when he did light work prior to leaving for Germany:
Bryant: No. No setbacks, no soreness, everything felt good.

Q: On what he’s taken away from players who have suffered the same injury:
Bryant: You obviously look at the situations that were successful and try to draw from that. You try to ignore the ones that weren’t as successful just to stay positive. But you try to draw a little bit from what they’ve been able to do and also keep in mind it was done years ago before all the medical advances we’ve made since.

Q: On the self-doubt he goes through and what goes through his mind when have those those moments, and how he overcomes it:
Bryant: I don’t know what triggers those moments. It’s just when it’s an ongoing process, it just seems like it’s going to go on forever and you have those moments where you doubt yourself a little bit, but I try not to let it sit with me. I try to use it as motivation to propel me forward.

Q: On the challenge of trying to stay disciplined:
Bryant: I honestly just get up and do it, and try not to think about it. I just get up. It’s almost like Groundhog Day. You just go to work. Some days are more exciting than others. I roll out of bed, run out there and get to work.

Q: On if he looks at this whole process as a marathon, not a sprint:
Bryant: Yeah, that’s how I approached this injury and how we approached this injury from the beginning. It’s a marathon. You just have to get up and punch the clock every day, and continue to chip away at it everyday.

Q: On when he knows he’s reached that benchmark of feeling right in terms of his endurance and stamina:
Bryant: Because I feel comfortable. I feel comfortable getting out there and jumping and don’t feel like I have Bambi legs.
