Laker Girl Blog - Melissa
Happy Holidays Lakers fans!
My name is Melissa and this is my second season as a Los Angeles Laker Girl. I am beyond thankful and excited to be a part of this organization…..and can’t wait to see what the rest of this season has in store for everyone!
With Christmas right around the corner, these past few weeks have been filled with fun Holiday events. The first one of this week was the Lakers Annual Holiday Party for Kids. Held at the Toyota Sports Center, we had the opportunity to spend the day ice skating with kids from the Boys and Girls Club. It was so much fun for all of us to hang out with the kids. For some of them, it was their first time ice skating so it was awesome to be able to help them on the ice and be a part of their first experience. By the end of the skating session, some of these kids were pros! After ice skating, I worked up an appetite so I made sure to stop by Carl’s Jr. where I got my favorite Western Bacon Cheeseburger with CrissCut fries. Yum!
The following day we had a home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Lakers fans showed amazing support and cheered on the players to a successful victory! As exciting as the game was, a more exciting event followed after the game. Many people may not know that the Lakers have an Adopt-A-Family Program. This program gives back to families in need and gives them a Christmas surprise they will never forget. These families in particular were able to come and watch the game against the Timberwolves. After the game, a few Laker Girls were able to meet these families members while they waited for an even bigger surprise…..a chance to meet some of the Lakers players! It was so amazing to meet these families and see how excited they were. I definitely enjoyed meeting them all and sharing in their excitement!
After a fun game day, it was time to get ready for the D-Fenders game the next day. This D-Fenders game was particularly special because at halftime, we got to perform with young girls from a variety of youth dance teams and cheer squads interspersed throughout Los Angeles. Before the game even begun, a few of us met with the girls and taught them the fun dance routine they were going to perform at halftime. They were all eager to dance and had the most amazing energy. We knew they were going to be great performers at halftime! While they weren’t performing, they cheered loud in the stands and led the D-Fenders to an amazing victory against Idaho Stampede!
Finally, my favorite day of the year….Christmas!! This day marked a huge game, the Los Angeles Lakers against Miami Heat. We could feel the excitement in the arena with all of the fans. Everyone was in full Holiday spirit and we even spotted a few Santa Clauses in the crowd! Everyone that went to the game was also given a complimentary Lakers Holiday beanie. This game was particularly fun because we got to wear a uniform that is only worn once a year…our shiny, purple Christmas dresses! Along with our holiday dresses came fun Christmas routines to some of our favorite, classic Christmas songs. The game, as a whole, was definitely a nail biter and so, so close! The Lakers played hard, but fell a little short and unfortunately, we lost. But a loss didn’t kill the Christmas spirit that radiated in the air that night. This game was definitely one I will always remember!
A few away games later, we were finally back at STAPLES Center for a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. There was no doubt the fans came with a lot of energy and it was definitely a fun crowd. The last minute of the game was neck to neck but we ended with a loss. Hopefully we will get a win the next game on New Year’s Eve!
As 2013 begins to come to a close, and as I mentioned earlier, I cannot wait to see what the New Year has to offer for the rest of this season! I look forward to seeing you all at the games as we continue cheering on the best team in the NBA!
