2013-14 Lakers Adopt-A-Family
For the second year in a row the Lakers participated in the Adopt-A-Family Program as part of their holiday community initiative, “Season of Giving” with East West Bank. In partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Homeless Education Program the Lakers and East West Bank were given ten families, and their job was to ensure they had a Christmas to remember.
East West Bank branches we given a Christmas tree with the Christmas wish list of each family member on the ornaments. The branches were very successful in collecting toys, clothes and household items for all of the families.
The next step was to wrap all of the presents. The Lakers held a wrapping party at their office, where Lakers employees spent the better part of a day wrapping up all the presents and watching the Lakers take on the Memphis Grizzlies simultaneously. After several hours wrapping, the nearly one hundred presents were wrapped and ready to be transported to Staples Center for the postgame event.
All of the families arrived at the game via bus and for many of them it was their first Laker game. They were escorted inside to watch the team take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. As the Lakers defeated the Timberwolves, the families were escorted down to the court where they were greeted by the Laker Girls who signed photos and took pictures with all the families.
As the Laker Girls were busy signing autographs a few special guests came out to greet the families: Nick Young, Robert Sacre and Jodie Meeks. Little did the families know they were in for a big surprise when the players took them to a special area of STAPLES Center that had been put together in their honor. When the players and families made their way to the area the families couldn’t believe that we had fulfilled their Christmas wish lists with presents. Young, Meeks, and Sacre handed out all of the presents to the respective families and even Kobe had a special gift for each person.
Once the families had gotten their gifts and took some final photos with the players, they headed upstairs and boarded the bus with many gifts and memories in hand.
