The New York Knicks & New York Liberty partnered with the FIBA North American 3 on 3 Championships and the Hoop It Up World Championships.
Both events were conducted in the parking lots of Citi Field this weekend August 18-19 from 9am-3pm both days for 120 teams, over 600 participants comprised of youth, adult, coed and mixed gender divisions. Tournament featured Knicks alumni (Larry Johnson/John Wallace) and the Knicks City Dancers appearances on the Knicks sport court with the Groove Truck, a slam dunk, 3 point and other contests for prizes with top teams being honored at a 2012 Knicks game.
There was a total of 15 teams playing in the FIBA tournament, coming from Belize City, Dallas, Denver, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Juan, Santo Domingo, and Toronto. Over the course of the weekend Hoop it Up gave out a total of $20,000 to teams and players in the tournament, including $12,000 for the winning team from Denver and $2,000 for the winner of the Slam Dunk contest. Ultimately the top four teams from the tournament will go on to play Miami in September 23rd weekend to play for $40,000 in prize money.
Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education, participated in the FIBA event. He is a Hoop It Up Champion, and his team has won three years in a row. FIBA is the world governing body of basketball. The overall mission of the FIBA tour is to promote the growth of 3 on 3 basketball across the world, ultimately having the sport included in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The Hoop It Up World Championships is the culmination of a 30 city tour across the United States. The top teams from tour stops across the nation will join the best teams in New York to compete for a $1,000 cash prize. Founded in 1989, the Hoop It Up National Tour is the largest 3 on 3 basketball tour in the nation. Hoop It Up offers exciting basketball activities and entertainment with a full two days of weekend programming and visibility. These high energy events are conducted mostly in downtown streets or landmark locations and have a family festive atmosphere.
