Pacers-Knicks Preview

The New York Knicks have won 14 of their last 15 games despite a roster that's hardly healthy, so getting some rest heading into the playoffs would be a welcome opportunity.

With a win Sunday, they can afford to do just that.

The Knicks look to clinch the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed when they host the Indiana Pacers in a preview of a potential second-round postseason clash.

New York was a game behind Indiana in the race for the second spot on March 17 after suffering its fourth consecutive defeat, but Thursday's 118-111 overtime loss in Chicago is its only setback since.

The Knicks (52-27) pulled three games ahead of the Pacers with Friday's 101-91 win at Cleveland coupled with Indiana's 117-109 home loss to Brooklyn, meaning New York can lock up the No. 2 seed Sunday. Even with a Pacers win - which would give them the season series 3-1 - the Knicks would need only one victory or one Indiana loss in the final two games to clinch.

But New York would like to take care of business Sunday, and give Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith a breather prior to the playoffs after they've combined to average 57.2 points over the past 15 games.

"It's very beneficial," Smith said of the chance to rest. "It means a lot. It's something we've been talking about consistently over the last few weeks, we've been wanting to lock up that two seed."

Finishing second would earn the Knicks a first-round date with Boston, but a showdown with Indiana could be looming in the East semifinals. The home team has won each of the first three meetings in the season series.

"We've proven this year we can win on the road, but it always helps to have home-court advantage," coach Mike Woodson said. "That goes a long way when you're trying to get to the Eastern Conference finals."

Even when Woodson's team beat the Pacers 88-76 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 18, Indiana caused problems for New York. The Knicks shot 36.7 percent in that game, and that was their most efficient performance against the Pacers this season.

Indiana (49-30) held New York to 33.7 percent in a 125-91 win Feb. 20. The Knicks, who broke the NBA record for 3-pointers made in a season Thursday and average 10.8 per game, have gone 16 of 73 (21.9 percent) from beyond the arc against the Pacers.

Anthony, who was suspended for an 81-76 loss in Indianapolis on Jan. 10, averaged 20.5 points and shot 37.2 percent in the two meetings he played. Smith was 11 of 36 in the two losses to the Pacers.

Indiana didn't defend at anything close to that level against New York's other team Friday. Brooklyn shot 51.2 percent, becoming just the sixth team to crack the 50-percent mark this season against the Pacers.

The Nets shot 65.1 percent in the first half, scoring 69 points.

"Clearly, we've got to start games with a bigger sense of urgency than we have in the last four games," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "To win in the playoffs you have to play with a sense of urgency in all four quarters."

Paul George has been held to 11.3 points per game on 29.2 percent shooting as Indiana has lost three of four, but he's averaged 23.7 points against New York.

The Pacers have averaged 46.2 points in the paint in their last nine games - 6.2 above their season average - and David West and Roy Hibbert could have more success inside if Tyson Chandler (bulging disc) and Kenyon Martin (ankle) are out again.

The Knicks have started the 6-foot-8 Chris Copeland at center the past two games.

Chandler and Martin are questionable, while Raymond Felton should play despite a sprained knee.

Knicks beat Pacers and clinch No. 2 seed in East

NEW YORK (AP) Carmelo Anthony and his sore left shoulder will probably get the night off Monday.

The New York Knicks have earned the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, and with it the chance the rest some aching bodies.

Anthony scored 25 points on 9-for-23 shooting against the rugged Indiana defense, and the Knicks wrapped up the second spot with a 90-80 victory over the Pacers on Sunday.

The Knicks are back on the court Monday at Charlotte, but Anthony doesn't think he'll be joining them with nothing left to play for in the regular season.

"I always said today was a real important game for us to come in and lock down (the No. 2 seed)," Anthony said. "It was a big game for us so now guys can get their rest, I can get my rest and come back full speed ready for the playoffs."

Chris Copeland added 20 points and J.R. Smith had 15 for the Knicks, who will host seventh-seeded Boston next weekend. New York is guaranteed the home-court advantage for the first two rounds of the playoffs after finishing a distant second to Miami in the conference.

Anthony didn't play in the fourth quarter, ending his streak of 30-point games at seven, after he bruised his left shoulder when he was fouled by Sam Young in the third. Anthony had gone to the scorer's table to check back in with around 4 minutes left, but was called back to the bench after Raymond Felton's basket pushed the lead back to 12.

The Knicks won for the 15th time in 16 games and locked up their highest seed since they were also a No. 2 in 1994.

"It's a good feeling to be in this position, to have home-court advantage for two rounds if we're lucky enough to make it that far," Felton said. "And just setting goals early in the year and accomplishing them is really big. We're definitely happy now, not satisfied, though."

Lance Stephenson scored 22 points and David West had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who came into the game with a chance to catch the Knicks for second but had to settle for wrapping up No. 3 after Brooklyn lost 93-87 at Toronto.

"Coach came in here and told us. We weren't satisfied with that," All-Star Paul George said. "Of course we felt we earned it playing throughout the year, but we haven't really earned it as far as getting the win and solidifying it ourselves. That's really how it's been. We're just not taking care of business."

The Pacers committed 26 turnovers that led to 33 points and shot 61.5 percent at the free throw line, losing for the fourth time in five games with a sloppy offensive performance. Coach Frank Vogel will rest some of his players, too, noting George's 1-of-8 shooting from 3-point range.

"Got a couple of guys banged up and a couple of guys with dead legs," he said. "I mean, Paul George's 3-point shot is not even close. He's been playing too many minutes. Miami's had the luxury to rest some guys and Boston's had the luxury to rest some guys. We're going to take advantage of that."

Anthony got the Knicks off to a quick start and the Pacers could never get particularly close. But their physical play slowed him down enough to end his hopes of catching teammate Amare Stoudemire's Knicks record of nine straight 30-point games.

After Monday, the Knicks close out the regular season at home against Atlanta on Wednesday. Coach Mike Woodson said he expected to rest some players and would ask certain players what they wanted to do. Anthony, who took a pounding Sunday, might sit out the finale, too, after his recent surge that moved him to the top of the league scoring race.

Then it's Boston, a veteran team that appears more dangerous than the average No. 7 seed.

"They're a very good team," reserve Steve Novak said. "I think Knicks and the Celtics is kind of storied, been a rivalry for quite a while. So we understand that it's a big series and we have to go through everybody to get where we want to go."

Anthony leads the NBA with 9.0 points per first quarter, and got there Sunday in just 2 minutes, 20 seconds. He finished with 13 points in the period as New York led 23-15.

Copeland hit consecutive 3-pointers during a 15-2 spurt early in the second, and the lead grew to 41-21 on Novak's 3-pointer with 7:03 remaining in the half. The Knicks still led by 15 with 3 1/2 minutes left, but Indiana turned to an effective zone defense and scored seven straight to get back into it, cutting it to 47-40 at halftime.

The Knicks had it back to 13 in the third after back-to-back baskets by Smith, but Indiana hung close and was within single digits early in the fourth before the Knicks pulled away again.

Without Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin, the Knicks started Solomon Jones, who was signed Friday to give them some size against Pacers center Roy Hibbert. He was scoreless in 14 minutes.

Woodson said the Knicks should have their size back in time for their playoff opener, with Chandler (bulging disk) and Martin (sprained left ankle) both getting better. He also said Rasheed Wallace, recovering from a broken bone in his left foot and out since December, also could be available this week.

Notes: Woodson said Wallace has been running and shooting the last few days and could play in one of the remaining two regular-season games if he feels up to it. ... Boston swept New York in the first round in 2011. ... Woodson couldn't get out of the way quick enough and was hit with the ball when West fired a pass out of bounds in the first half.

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony went for 25 points despite suffering a contused left shoulder that knocked him out in the fourth quarter and the Knicks secured the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with an 90-80 win over the Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden.

Winners of 15 of 16, the Knicks are locked into a first-round showdown with the Boston Celtics. The Knicks won the season series, 3-1, over Boston for the first time since the 2003-4 season. The Knicks will have homecourt advantage through the first two rounds of the postseason.

Chris Copeland added 20 points off the bench and J.R. Smith tallied 15 points and eight rebounds for New York

In his return to New York, Brooklyn native Lance Stephenson went for a season-best 22 points in the loss. David West added 17 points and eight rebounds.

THE STAT: The Knicks shot 11-for-31 (36 percent) from the arc, while the Pacers went 8-for-28 (29 percent).

TURNING POINT: The Knicks led 23-15 after one period and extended the bulge to 41-21 in the second quarter before Indiana closed to within 47-40 at the half. Anthony had 15 points at the break and Copeland 12.

WHO'S HOT: Anthony entered as the NBA's leading scorer (28.7 ppg) and was averaging 36 points and 13.4 rebounds in his last five games. He did receive his 14th technical foul in the third period. With two more during the regular season, he would get a one-game suspension.

WHO'S NOT: Jason Kidd went scoreless with four assists. He entered averaging 5.6 points and 1.6 assists in his last five games.

NOTABLE: The Knicks were again without Tyson Chandler (bulging disc in his neck), Kenyon Martin (sore left knee), Marcus Camby (left plantar fasciitis), Amar'e Stoudemire (right knee debridement) and Rasheed Wallace (fractured left fifth metatarsal). Solomon Jones got his first start as a Knick in place of Copeland. Martin and Chandler won't travel to Charlotte for Monday's game. "Tyson is getting better and Kenyon, surprisingly, is getting better, too," Woodson said. "Neither will travel to Charlotte." He added: "We got Wednesday's game so we'll see where they are Tuesday and then make a decision if they're going to play Wednesday [in Atlanta] or not." The coach said both Chandler and Martin will be available for Game 1 of the playoffs. "Yes," he said, "they will be there." As for Camby, Woodson called him "day-to-day," but said "I think he'll be ready [for the playoffs], too."

NOTABLE II: Wallace, who hasn't played since Dec. 13, has been running the past few days and, depending on how he feels Monday, could play Wednesday against Atlanta. "It all depends on how he comes out of today's workout, see how he feels tomorrow," Woodson said. He added: "Rasheed ran the last few days, so he's getting there. Still has a ways to go." Woodson said Wallace would "for sure" be ready for the playoffs and said he'd love to get 10-15 minutes a game from him then. "I think anything from 10-15 minutes, Rasheed being on the floor would be a positive for our ballclub," he said.
