Cavaliers-76ers Preview

Both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers are eying the future with nothing to play for in the final week of the season. Whether respective coaches Doug Collins and Byron Scott are part of those long-term plans is uncertain as the teams meet Sunday in Philadelphia.

The 76ers (32-47) will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010, and there has been plenty of speculation Collins will not return for a fourth season at the helm. Philadelphia showed some signs of life Friday at Washington, ending a brutal three-game losing streak in which it had been outscored by an average of 21.0 points by rallying from a 13-point second-quarter deficit to beat the Wizards 97-86.

"It would be very easy - we didn't practice yesterday - to come in here, throw your sneakers out there, you get down 13 and get beat by 20," said Collins, who danced around his job status with reporters prior to the victory.

Jrue Holiday scored 22 points and Thaddeus Young added 18 and 13 rebounds for the 76ers, who are still stinging from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the postseason.

"I think whether it's a conscious thing or a subconscious thing, when you officially get eliminated, it kind of hits you, it takes some of the wind out of your sails," said Spencer Hawes, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. "But then you regroup and refocus and try to take out of it whatever you can from the last however-many games."

Evan Turner, who went 0 for 11 on Friday and failed to score, has averaged 18.0 points on 52.4 percent shooting in helping Philadelphia win two of three versus Cleveland this season. He had 23 points and 13 rebounds in the most recent meeting, a 97-87 road win March 29.

Turner, though, has totaled 20 points on 7-of-33 shooting in his last three games.

Scott, who earlier this month said he would "give (himself) a 'C' or incomplete" when asked about his coaching effort, has also endured speculation about his status despite the Cavaliers (24-55) already picking up his option for the 2013-14 season. Owner Dan Gilbert and general manager Chris Grant have not publicly commented on Scott, who is 62-160 since joining a franchise that has been stuck in rebuilding mode since LeBron James departed for Miami.

While Scott does have guard Kyrie Irving as a cornerstone and forward Tristan Thompson emerging as a vocal leader, the young Cavaliers have struggled down the stretch. They suffered their 13th loss in 15 games on Friday, 101-91 to the New York Knicks, as Irving scored 31 points and Thompson added 15 and 11 while fighting uphill for most of the game after a poor second quarter.

"I think our pace slowed down a little bit, I take responsibility for that," Irving said after the Cavs were held to 19 second-quarter points. "Coming out, we wanted to make an emphasis on pushing the ball and be more aggressive. I felt like some of the opportunities as a team we didn't exploit."

Irving has missed the last two games against the 76ers due to injury and was held to nine points on 4-of-14 shooting in an 86-79 loss at Philadelphia on Nov. 18. Thompson has averaged 9.3 points and 9.7 rebounds in the three games, but has shot only 34.4 percent (11 for 32).

76ers roll past Cavaliers 91-77 in home finale

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Doug Collins walked off the Philadelphia court a winner for the final time in his 76ers' coaching career.

Collins won't be back for a fourth season in Philly.

Dorell Wright scored 15 points and Thaddeus Young had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Sixers to a 91-77 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.

With the team missing the playoffs, Collins' future had become the focal point.

But two people with knowledge of the situation, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Sixers and Collins had not formally announced the move, said Collins will not return next season as coach.

The Sixers picked up the option on Collins' contract for the 2013-14 season in training camp and he said then he wanted to remain with the organization in some capacity when his coaching career is over. Collins has refused this week to discuss next season, and said he would only discuss the home finale because, "everything else is moot."

His agent, John Langel, tried to diffuse the blossoming speculation and said Collins planned to return next season.

"He's here for another year, at least," Langel said. "He's the coach and we'll see what happens."

Turns out Collins was already out the door.

The Sixers finished 23-18 at home and are 33-47 overall, currently sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers won 35 games and a round in the playoffs in last year's lockout-shortened season.

Hoping to build on that momentum, the Sixers broke up the nucleus of a team full of solid players and went big for a superstar. Instead of a deep playoff run, the Sixers have a date with the draft lottery.

The Andrew Bynum deal is already on the short list of worst trades in Philadelphia sports history. Bynum never played for the Sixers because of bone bruises in both knees. He stated time and again he would play this season, only to shut it down for good on March 18 and undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on both knees. Bynum earned $16.5 million this season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

"We're really in a bit of a hole," team adviser Julius Erving said. "It's almost like starting all over."

The Sixers had a season full of high expectations practically unravel on media day when they announced Bynum would not be ready for training camp.

"If we had Andrew, it'd be a completely different story," said Young. "The team was built for him. We had shooters, we had ball handlers, we had guys who do the grunt work. We have Andrew in the mix, that's easily 20-10."

Bynum last talked to the media March 1 and said he would not play in pain or be pressured into playing and risking a potential nine-figure payday. Erving, a Hall of Famer and one of the 76ers' greatest all-time players, said the organization should be wary about getting back in business with Bynum.

"The net result is Robert Parrish's old number: zero zero," Erving said. "We have not benefited one degree. I guess he has."

Dr. J added: "It's going to be costly if the Bynum situation is one of total uncertainty for another year. I don't think the organization should stand for that and I don't think the fans are going to stand for that."

With the season down to the final days, Collins lamented how the Bynum deal backfired this season - and could have repercussions for years to come.

"I'd give (owner) Josh (Harris) and our organization a lot of credit, they swung for the fences," Collins said. "Unfortunately, with Andrew getting hurt ... it changed the whole dynamic of our season."

Spencer Hawes and Jrue Holiday both scored 14 points for the Sixers, who raced to a 19-point lead in the first half and sent the Cavaliers to their fourth straight loss.

Tristan Thompson had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavs, Kevin Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kyrie Irving scored four points in 18 minutes.

The game was a matchup of potential lame-duck coaches. Cavaliers coach Byron Scott is on the hot seat with the team buried near the bottom of the East standings. Scott is under contract for next year after the club picked up his option in October.

Scott has tried to not let the job speculation affect him.

"It really doesn't bother me," he said. "It's part of the job. Whatever happens, happens."

Outside of a rebounding edge, the Cavaliers had another dismal performance - 37 percent shooting, 5-of-16 from 3-point range, and only 10 of 15 free throws.

"Lack of effort, it's as simple as that," Scott said. "It's disappointing. That's why you yank guys out and bring other guys in, to see if they can get it going. They have to play with a lot more energy and a lot more effort than they did tonight."

The Cavaliers missed 11 of their first 13 shots and finished at 31 percent in the first half. With the Cavaliers struggling, the Sixers stormed to a 16-3 lead and were ahead 53-34 at the break. The Sixers never looked back and gave their fans one final reason to feel good heading into an uncertain offseason.

"We had a really good chance with Andrew of probably making it pretty deep in the playoffs," Holiday said.

Notes: Erving and the rest of the 1983 NBA champions - the last time the Sixers won a title - were honored at halftime. ... Harris said the team would work hard to make next year "more exciting and better" for the fans.

THE FACTS: Dorell Wright scored 15 points, Jrue Holiday, Thaddeus Young and Spencer Hawes scored 14 each, and the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 91-77 Sunday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center. Damien Wilkins contributed 11 points and Arnett Moultrie had 10 for the Sixers, who improved to 33-47. It was the home finale for the Sixers, who have two road games remaining.

Five Cavaliers scored in double figures. Tristan Thompson, Wayne Ellington and Marreese Speights had 12 each while Kevin Jones and Dion Waiters added 11 apiece. It was the fourth loss in a row for the reeling Cavaliers, who fell to 24-56.

QUOTABLE: "We had expectations for this season and it didn't turn out the way we wanted. It's a funny league sometimes, and we have to finish out on the road and come back strong next season."

THE STAT: The Cavaliers shot just 36.5 percent from the field. Five players had one or fewer field goals in the game. Never a good sign.

TURNING POINT: The Sixers jumped out to a 16-3 lead and never looked back. They led by as many as 28 points and never allowed Cleveland to climb within any kind of striking distance.

HOT: Moultrie hit five of his six shots while Hawes was 6-for-11.

NOT: Tyler Zeller was 0-for-6, Kyrie Irving was 1-for-6 and Waiters misfired on 10 of his 15 shots.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hawes had 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals. It's the second time over the past 14 games that Hawes reached all these milestones in the same game -- March 20 at L.A. Clippers. Prior to that, the last Sixer to accomplish the feat was Jerry Stackhouse against Washington on March 29, 1996.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The Sixers celebrated the 30th anniversary of the 1982-83 championship team. Among those in attendance were Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Franklin Edwards, Earl Cureton, Clint Richardson and Reggie Johnson. They were honored during a halftime ceremony and received a rousing ovation from the fans. "It's a great, great city for basketball, and in '82-83, the fans were especially amazing," Malone said. "I was glad we got a title for the fans. Just a great season all the way around."

QUOTABLE III: "It's very important. You always want to win the last game at home. You don't want to leave with a bad taste in your mouth."

GOOD MOVE: Sixers coach Doug Collins gave some of his younger players extended playing time and it paid off. Moultrie and Justin Holiday played strong all-around games and gave the starters some rest.

BAD MOVE: Scott said he was unhappy with his players' effort, but he could have played Irving more than 18:57. The Cavaliers struggled in just about every phase and Irving's leadership could have helped.

ROOKIE WATCH: Waiters and Jones scored 11 points each. Zeller was scoreless in 24:29, missing all six of his shots. For the Sixers, guard Holiday had six points while Moultrie had 10 points and six rebounds.

NOTABLE: The Sixers have won eight of the past games against the Cavaliers. ... The Sixers finished 23-18 at home while winning six of the final eight. They have posted a winning mark at home in 14 of the past 15 seasons. ... The Sixers blocked nine shots. They're 12-6 this season when registering seven or more blocked shots. ... Cleveland had 19 turnovers, six by Waiters. ... Cavaliers guard Shaun Livingston didn't dress because of back spasms. ... Wright leads the Sixers with 127 made 3-pointers. He was 3-for-8 against Cleveland. His 127 treys are the ninth-most by a Sixer in a single season. ... Thompson (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Jones (11 points, 10 rebounds) earned double-doubles for the Cavaliers.
