Nets-Raptors Preview

The Brooklyn Nets' first playoff appearance since 2007 will be at home. That's still not good enough for them.

Brooklyn continues its push for the third seed in the Eastern Conference - and goes for its first season sweep of the Toronto Raptors in a decade - in Sunday's road finale.

After opening its three-game trip Wednesday with a 101-93 victory over Boston, the Nets (47-32) clinched at least the fourth seed with their fourth consecutive win, 117-109 over Indiana on Friday. The victory also prevented the Pacers, the Central Division champs, from locking up the No. 3 spot.

Brooklyn is two games behind Indiana and holds the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the Pacers. Winning their final three games - a very possible scenario considering the Nets host Washington and Detroit to finish out the regular season - would force Indiana to win two of its last three just to keep the third seed.

"We could still get the 3 seed," said point guard Deron Williams, who finished with 33 points and a season high-tying 14 assists on Friday. "We have to hope for Indiana to lose some games, but it's still possible. I think we have a good thing going right now."

Williams has been at the center of the Nets' current win streak, averaging team highs with 26.3 points and 9.0 assists.

He'll will try to help Brooklyn win five straight for the first time since it capped off a season-best seven-game run with a 113-106 victory over Toronto (31-48) on Jan. 15.

That loss was the Raptors' third in this Atlantic Division series this season, but all have been by seven or fewer points.

Toronto, a 94-88 loser Dec. 12 in the Nets' only visit, aren't in playoff contention, but it's still fighting to pick up as many wins as possible. The Raptors have won four of five, the last two against Chicago, after dropping seven of eight.

"I'm not happy, I'm not satisfied, I'm disappointed as anyone that we didn't make the playoffs, but we're taking steps," coach Dwane Casey said following Friday's 97-88 home win.

The Raptors, who will miss the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, have a chance to win three in a row for the first time since a season high-tying five-game surge from Feb. 8-19.

They could be without rookies Terrence Ross (sprained ankle) and Jonas Valanciunas (neck) for a second consecutive game. If Valanciunas can't go, Aaron Gray will likely start at center opposite Brook Lopez.

The Nets' big man, averaging 23.3 points during the win streak, missed the team's last three games in Toronto due to injuries.

It's uncertain if Brooklyn forward Gerald Wallace (lower left leg contusion) will be sidelined for a second straight game.

If the Nets can win a fourth consecutive road game - something they haven't done since Nov. 26-Dec. 6, 2008 - they'll earn their first sweep of the Raptors since going 4-0 against them in 2002-03.

DeRozan scores 36 as Raptors beat Nets 93-87

TORONTO (AP) Deron Williams crumpled up his stat sheet and threw it away in disgust. A loss to the lottery-bound Toronto Raptors meant his Brooklyn Nets had lost their chance at earning the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

DeMar DeRozan scored 36 points, Rudy Gay had 26 points and 10 rebounds and the Raptors won their third straight game, never trailing in a 93-87 victory over the Nets on Sunday.

Brooklyn is still going to the playoffs, but could have closed to within one game of Indiana after the Pacers lost 90-80 to the New York Knicks.

Disappointing, Deron?

"You said it," he replied.

Brooklyn can still tie Indiana, but the Pacers would win the tiebreaker because they're guaranteed to win the Central Division. Brooklyn is assured of second place in the Atlantic.

"We don't know whether we're playing Chicago or Atlanta but there's finality for the fourth spot," Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "That's a good thing going forward."

Carlesimo, who acknowledged keeping tabs on the Pacers as the game in Toronto wound down, said his staff will have "serious conversations" about resting players for the final two games of the season. Brooklyn is home to Washington on Monday and hosts Detroit in Wednesday's finale.

"We don't need to get anybody hurt," Carlesimo said. "We're not playing for anything. Going forward now we've certainly got to rest some people."

Williams is among those who could use some down time before the playoffs begin.

"I got kneed twice today in two different spots," he said. "We'll see how it goes (Monday)."

Amir Johnson had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Raptors, who hadn't won three straight since a five-game winning streak from Feb. 8 to 19.

"Obviously it means nothing for the standings or our record next year," Gay said. "It's just the mentality that we're trying to start having, not giving up, working hard. This is a jump-start for next year."

DeRozan scored 14 in the fourth quarter and finished 9-for-9 at the free throw line, converting a vital pair in the final 15 seconds. He finished one point shy of his career high, set last Nov. 12 against Utah.

Carlesimo, a Raptors assistant in the 2010-11 season, said DeRozan has come a long way in two years.

"I really think he went from good, promising young player to a very solid guard," Carlesimo said.

Williams scored 30 points, Brook Lopez had 16 and Andray Blatche 15 for the Nets, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Brooklyn trailed 70-59 to begin the fourth, but a jump shot by Joe Johnson cut the gap to 74-70 with 6:08 left.

DeRozan answered with a three-point play, giving Toronto a 77-70 lead.

Williams made a pair of free throws and Blatche hit one of two at the line, cutting it to 77-75, but Gay stole an errant pass by Williams and completed a three-point play, putting Toronto up 80-75 with 4:42 to go.

Raptors guard Kyle Lowry made one of two from the line after a clear path foul and Gay hit a pull-up jumper on the following possession, making it 83-75 with 3:37 left and forcing the Nets to call a timeout.

Lopez hit a free throw and Williams followed with a jumper, but DeRozan made a 3 from the wing with 2:42 remaining, giving the Raptors an 86-78 lead.

Williams forced a steal and made a 3, cutting it to 86-82 with 1:39 on the clock, but DeRozan answered with a pair of free throws.

Joe Johnson's 3 with 24 seconds left trimmed the deficit to 91-87 and Lowry missed two free throws. Johnson tried another 3 but missed the rim, and DeRozan sealed it with two free throws.

Toronto will miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year, the longest streak of futility in franchise history, but DeRozan already has high hopes for next year, when he and Gay will line up together for a full season. Toronto acquired Gay from Memphis in a three-team trade on Jan. 30.

"I don't see any team being able to stop us, especially if we're playing like we played tonight," DeRozan said.

DeRozan scored 11 in the first and Gay banked in a 3 at the buzzer as the Raptors led 24-20 after one.

Gay scored seven points in the second, two of them on an alley-oop dunk from Kyle Lowry with 3:16 left that put the Raptors up 46-26. Toronto led 51-32 at the half.

"They were knocking down shots from every which way," Joe Johnson said. "Give them credit. They were pretty hot tonight."

Williams scored 15 points in the third and Lopez had 12 but the Nets still trailed by 11 heading into the fourth.

"We just dug too big a hole," Carlesimo said.

NOTES: Toronto outrebounded Brooklyn 48-38. ... Former Raptor Reggie Evans had 16 rebounds for the Nets but didn't take a single shot. ... THE FACTS: The Toronto Raptors (32-48) defeated the Brooklyn Nets (47-33) 93-87 to win their third game in a row and the fifth of their last six games to avoid a season sweep. Toronto led wire-to-wire and gained as much as a 21-point lead, but had some trouble late in the game, but DeMar DeRozan falling one point short of his career-high willed his squad with 36 points and five rebounds. Rudy Gay's double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds and Amir Johnson's 10 points and nine rebounds complimented the attack as the Raptors defeated their second playoff-bound opponent in a row.

Despite leading throughout the game, the Raptors did everything right leading throughout the game and despite great shot opportunities by the Nets, they couldn't get anything to fall, ballooning their lead to as much as 21 points in the first half, taking a 51-32 lead into halftime.

However, the Nets bounced back in the second half as Deron Williams scored all Nets points on a 13-4 run to end the quarter and bring the game within 11 points at 70-59. They continued to push in the fourth with 28 points in the frame, where Andray Blatche scored 10 points as the Nets brought the lead to four points with 24 seconds left. DeRozan was able to provide the distance scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter, nine of which were from the free throw line, where he didn't miss a shot en route to the team's thirteenth home victory.

Williams led all Nets with 30 points and seven assists, Brook Lopez added 16 points and Blatche had 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

QUOTABLE: "He did a heck of a job of letting the game come to him and reading the game, he was very efficient with his shots and using the screens. He's just grown in every aspect offensively that you could ask for."

THE STAT: Free throw shooting. While both teams were relatively close in terms of their trips to the line, (Toronto 21 attempts, Brooklyn 19 attempts) the Nets shot a lowly 58 percent and with a six point margin of victory, those eight missed free throws were crucial.

TURNING POINT: The Nets turned the game around late in the third and through most of the fourth, bringing the game to within four points with 24 seconds left. However, DeRozan's two made free throws with 15.3 seconds left gave the Raptors a 93-87 lead, and drove the nail in the Nets coffin for good.

HOT: DeRozan fell one point short of his career high with 37 on 12-for-22 shooting from the field and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. He also set a career-high with 3-pointers made with three, where he shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

NOT: While collectively, the Nets were poor in the first half, Johnson was the worst offender. He shot 4-for-16 from the field for 12 points and five assists for the game. Many of his shots were good looks but he couldn't get them to fall. Defensively Johnson covered DeRozan and Gay who went off for 36 and 26 points respectively.

NOTABLE: Nets forward Gerald Wallace was inactive with a lower left leg contusion, Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas was out with a sprained neck. Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and rapper Kardinal Offishal sat courtside. The Nets failed to win their fourth road game in a row, something they have failed to do since November 2008. They also failed to sweep the season series with Toronto, something they haven't done since the 2002-03 season.
