While their modest pursuit has taken a big hit as a result of their losing streak, the Washington Wizards have a chance to pick up a game on one of the teams they're trying to catch in the Eastern Conference.

The Wizards will try to keep their goal of a ninth-place finish in the East alive and win for the 10th time in 11 home games Friday night against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Although finishing one spot shy of a playoff berth doesn't seem like much of a goal, Washington coach Randy Wittman believes it's important considering his team has come all the way back from a 4-28 start.

"What do you want to aim for?" Wittman said. "Eighty wins, when you're 4-28?"

The Wizards (29-50) have certainly been a different club with a 24-22 record since John Wall returned from a knee injury Jan. 12. The point guard has been excellent lately, averaging 26.8 points over his last 10 games.

Wall finished with 17 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in a 103-98 loss to Miami on Wednesday that snapped Washington's nine-game home winning streak.

The Wizards - 11th in the East - are running out of time in their quest to finish ninth, trailing 10th-place Toronto by 1 1/2 games and the ninth-place 76ers by 2 1/2 with three remaining.

They'll have an opportunity to stop a three-game losing streak overall and inch their way closer to the 76ers, who dropped their third straight and fourth in five games with a 124-101 home loss to Atlanta on Wednesday.

Thaddeus Young had 22 of his team-high 28 points in the first half and Nick Young added 19 off the bench, but the 76ers (31-47) shot 42.0 percent from the field while allowing the Hawks to hit 53.8.

"Our defense over the last few games has really slipped," coach Doug Collins said.

Now Collins' club will have to find a way to slow down a Washington team that has averaged 103.1 points on 47.9 percent shooting over its last 10 at home.

Center Emeka Okafor has put up some solid numbers in this series, finishing with 15 points and 17 rebounds in a 92-84 road loss Jan. 30 and 12 and 16, respectively, in a 90-87 home win March 3.

Washington, though, is likely to be without starting forward Martell Webster after he left Wednesday's loss with an abdominal strain.

"It's super-sore. ... It's one of those times where you've got to shut it down," said Webster.

Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia's leading scorer at 17.9 per game, finished with 12 points while missing 10 of 14 shots Wednesday and has averaged 11.8 and shot 21 for 79 (26.6 percent) over his last five games.

The All-Star guard may have a difficult time breaking out of his slump in this contest. He's scored 10.1 per game on 33.3 percent shooting in seven career games in Washington, including a 4-for-19 performance in last month's loss.

The 76ers have averaged 90.3 points and made only 40.0 percent from the field during their skid, while the Wizards have limited opponents to 91.9 and 42.4 in their last 10 at home.

Washington has won six of the last seven meetings in the nation's capital.

76ers get motivated, rally to beat Wizards 97-86

WASHINGTON (AP) As he was walking off the court at halftime, Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins asked a favor of one of his captains.

"He was saying talk to the guys, try to keep their spirits up and stuff like that," Thaddeus Young said. "And I told him, `You have nothing to worry about. Everybody here in this locker room is trying to win this game."'

With their coach's future in question, the 76ers awoke from pack-it-in mode Friday night, recovering from a 13-point, second-quarter deficit and pulling away in the second half for a 97-86 win, putting to rest the Washington Wizards' goal of becoming the best non-playoff team in the Eastern Conference.

The 76ers had lost three straight, including two by an average of 22 points since being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Collins spent much of his pregame talk with reporters trying to not answer questions about whether he'll be back as coach next season. Motivation was becoming an issue.

"It would be very easy - we didn't practice yesterday - to come in here, throw your sneakers out there, you get down 13 and get beat by 20," Collins said.

Instead, Jrue Holiday scored 22 points to lead five 76ers in double figures, stopping a Wizards team that had generated motivation - and momentum - by declaring their goal to catch Philadelphia to help make up for a 4-28 start.

"I think whether it's a conscious thing or a subconscious thing, when you officially get eliminated, it kind of hits you, it takes some of the wind out of your sails," said Spencer Hawes, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. "But then you regroup and refocus and try to take out of it whatever you can from the last however-many games."

Young added 18 points and 13 points for the 76ers, while John Wall scored 24 points to lead the Wizards, who have lost four straight and trail the 76ers by 3 1/2 games with two left to end their chase - if it can really be called that - for No. 9.

"It's very disappointing," said Garrett Temple, who scored eight points. "We set that as a goal about a month ago, month-and-a-half ago and we were striving for that. But at the same time we have two more games left and we definitely want to get to 30 wins."

The 76ers had been a disinterested competitor for the Wizards, and they still could be caught by the 10th-place Toronto Raptors. Asked before the game if the tussle for ninth was on his radar, Collins shrugged and said: "You know, ninth, 10th - I mean, that's out of the playoffs."

Nevertheless, Holiday bounced back after a pair of bad games and made 8 of 17 shots and added seven assists. Evan Turner also had seven assists, helping compensate for his 0-for-11 night from the field.

The Wizards had been strong at home since Wall returned from a knee injury. They finished 22-19 at the Verizon Center, including 18-6 with Wall.

But ninth place will go to someone else.

"Any time you don't reach a goal you're a little disappointed," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "But we gave it a shot."

Notes: Philadelphia G Nick Young, a first-round draft pick by the Wizards in 2007, was booed when he entered the game for the first time as a visiting player at the Verizon Center. The reception amused Young so much that he covered his mouth with his hand to control his laughter. ... The Wizards played without Martell Webster (abdominal strain) and Trevor Ariza (sore left knee). ... Collins on his status with the 76ers: "I've told you all along, I'm not the topic of conversation. We're going to focus on the games, and we're going to play those. We'll sit down at the end of the season (as) I've always done. Philadelphia's Dorell Wright had the comic lowlight with a 3-point attempt late in the first quarter. The ball slipped out of his hands and went backward with no one touching it, landing in the front row of seats some 30 feet from the basket. "It just flew out of my hands," Wright said. "I don't know what the heck that was."

THE FACTS: Jrue Holiday scored 22 points, Thaddeus Young had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers ended a three-game losing streak with a 97-86 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday night.

Spencer Hawes and Damien Wilkins each scored 15 points for the 76ers (32-47), who had lost four of five games. Hawes scored seven points during a 12-0 third quarter for a 67-59 lead. Philadelphia maintained no less than a six-point cushion from there and Holiday's layup gave the visitors their largest lead at 92-78.

John Wall scored 24 points for the Wizards (29-51), who held a 13-point lead in the first quarter, but wound losing up their fourth straight game. Washington committed 17 turnovers and finished 1-for-13 on its 3-point attempts.

QUOTABLE: "Let's move forward to the basketball game. We have four more games to play. I've told you all along I'm not the topic of conversation. We're going to focus on the games and play those. THE STAT: In his previous two games, Holiday had only one assist in each. The All-Star guard found his distributing form with seven assists, four coming in the third quarter when the 76ers outscored the Wizards 26-16. Philadelphia finished with 29 assists
