There's a week left in another tough season for the Detroit Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers, who will again occupy the bottom two spots in the Central Division and are hearing rumors about the cloudy future of their respective coaches.

If beating Cleveland was the primary focus, Lawrence Frank wouldn't have any concerns about his job security.

The Pistons look for a sixth straight win in this series on Wednesday night when they visit the Cavaliers, who are coming off a particularly perplexing defeat.

Detroit (26-52) lost 21 of its first 28 games this season before a 14-12 stretch heading into the All-Star break, but the Pistons' 5-19 record since the break is better than only Orlando's.

Frank's team hadn't won at The Palace of Auburn Hills since the break, but snapped an eight-game skid there - and an 18-game series slide - with Sunday's 99-85 win over Chicago.

"We made a lot of winning-type plays and played with a lot of intensity," Frank said.

That victory came a day after Frank addressed rumors about his job being in jeopardy, saying "when you have a record like we have, it comes with the territory" - a statement that could just as easily apply to Cavaliers coach Byron Scott.

Star guard Kyrie Irving said Sunday he wouldn't address Scott's future, and Cleveland went out that night and beat Orlando 91-85 for its second straight win, but Scott may be feeling the heat again after Tuesday's game in Indiana. Up 86-66 with less than 10 minutes remaining, the Cavaliers collapsed down the stretch as the Pacers closed the game on a 33-8 run to win 99-94.

"We all have to take responsibility as a team, we all took our foot off the gas," said Irving, who finished with 29 points but had three of his eight turnovers in the final 2:36. " ... We just did not stay aggressive. We played not to lose instead of playing to win."

Cleveland (24-53) might not feel too great about its chances to recover Wednesday considering how poor it's played against Detroit recently. The Pistons have won the last five meetings by an average of 17.2 points, holding the Cavaliers to 37.1 percent shooting.

Irving has missed three of those losses, though he was around for the most recent - Detroit's 117-99 home win on Feb. 1 as it outscored Cleveland 62-42 in the paint.

Irving has averaged 23.5 points, 7.0 boards and 7.0 assists in two career home games against the Pistons, but the point guard picked seven spots after him in the 2011 draft has had his way with the Cavaliers. Brandon Knight has averaged 22.2 points on 54.1 percent shooting and 6.4 assists during Detroit's winning streak in the series.

Knight has scored 45 points in the Pistons' last two contests after totaling 38 points - on 29.2 percent shooting - in his previous six games.

When Knight has scored at least 15 points this season, Detroit is 17-15. When he's had 14 or fewer or hasn't played, it's 9-37.

Drummond, Monroe lead Pistons past Cavs 111-104

CLEVELAND (AP) One struggling team was bound to get some good news Wednesday night.

Detroit coach Lawrence Frank was happy to have something positive to talk about following the Pistons' 111-104 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"These are the guys we're building around, and we've got to fight for them," Frank said. "I have confidence in them, which is why I felt comfortable leaving them out there."

Andre Drummond scored a career-high 29 points and the Pistons won a second straight game for the first time in two months.

Greg Monroe's basket with 38.8 seconds remaining gave Detroit a 105-103 lead and the Pistons, who hadn't won consecutive games since Feb. 8-9, swept the four-game season series from the Cavaliers. Detroit has beaten Cleveland six straight times.

Drummond, who spent most of the fourth quarter at the free throw line after Cleveland coach Byron Scott chose to intentionally foul the 34 percent shooter, also grabbed 11 rebounds. Monroe scored 23 points and Rodney Stuckey added 18.

Kyrie Irving scored 27 points, including 21 in the second half, but missed a 3-pointer that would have given the Cavaliers the lead with 21 seconds left. The All-Star guard was playing on the second night of back-to-back games for the first time since returning from a shoulder injury. Irving committed two turnovers in the final 2:12 and missed a free throw with 16 seconds remaining.

"I was obviously a little fatigued just like everyone else on the floor, but that's no excuse for not executing," he said.

Both teams have been in recent tailspins, leading to speculation that the two coaches could be replaced at the end of the season. The Pistons have just four wins in their last 19 games and are 6-19 since the All-Star break. The Cavaliers have lost 12 of 14.

Drummond was 8 of 14 at the line in the fourth quarter and made two free throws to give Detroit a 101-99 lead with 2:06 to play. His tip-in put Detroit up by four, but Tristan Thompson scored on a drive and Irving's basket with 44 seconds remaining tied the game.

Drummond, who was 9 of 17 from the line for the game, wasn't surprised at the Cavaliers' strategy.

"I knew I needed to make them for us to win, so I just focused at the line," he said. "Some went in, some went out, but all of them were on line. It gives me more points. That's the way you've got to look at it. It gave me a chance to work on my free throws."

Monroe's basket gave Detroit the lead for good. Following Irving's missed 3-pointer, Cleveland's strategy backfired a bit when Drummond grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Thompson after passing the ball. Since the foul away from the ball occurred under the two-minute mark, the Pistons got two free throws and possession. Stuckey made a foul shot and Jonas Jerebko split a pair after another foul.

"I tried to foul him right away, but they called it after he passed the ball," said Thompson. "I guess it's my fault, but I have to keep playing."

Scott would like to have seen the foul occur when Drummond grabbed the rebound.

"I didn't think (Drummond) had the ball," Scott said. "I thought they were trying to take the ball up the floor. It was a young, second-year player mistake. Tristan was thinking right. It was just way too late."

Irving was injured March 10 and missed eight games. He returned March 31, but sat out the following night as part of the team's recovery protocol.

Dion Waiters came off the bench and scored 11 points in 15 minutes in his first action since injuring his left knee March 20. Waiters, the team's second-leading scorer, missed 10 games. Thompson added 19 points.

Will Bynum scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for the Pistons.

Pistons point guard Jose Calderon, the league's leading three-point shooter, missed his second straight game with a strained triceps. He's averaging 11.6 points a game since being acquired from Toronto.

The Cavaliers blew a 20-point, fourth-quarter lead Tuesday in a 99-94 loss at Indiana. Trailing by two in the closing seconds, Irving drove to the basket for an apparent game-tying layup but was whistled for charging. Scott thought Indiana's Jeff Pendgergraph should have been called for a blocking foul, but the call was upheld after a video review.

NOTES: Frank said C Jason Maxiell is still recovering from season-ending surgery for a detached retina and isn't traveling with the team. ... Cavaliers G C.J. Miles (concussion) missed his second straight game. Miles was inadvertently elbowed in the forehead by Orlando's Nikola Vucevic on Sunday. ... F Luke Walton (sprained ankle) missed his third straight game.

THE FACTS: Rookie center Andre Drummond scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading the Detroit Pistons to a 111-104 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday.

Drummond also set career bests in free throws made (9) and attempted (17). Detroit (27-52) power forward Greg Monroe added 23 points and eight boards for Detroit, while shooting guard Rodney Stuckey chipped in 18 points and seven assists. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving led Cleveland (24-54) with 27 points and a game-high nine assists, but also committed five turnovers. The Pistons swept their four-game season series with the Cavaliers for the first time since 2002-2003.

QUOTABLE: "Even with our [tough] schedule, we've got to find a way to win games. Andre [and I] were just being aggressive tonight, which we should be. We both want to continue to get better, and continue to get better together."

THE STAT: Drummond entered the game shooting .344 from the foul line, but made 9-for-17 on free throws to foil the "Hack-a-Dre" strategy employed by the Cavaliers. The ninth overall pick in the NBA Draft was fouled away from the ball seven times in the fourth quarter -- all in a 195-second span -- but calmly buried 8-for-14 (.571). "Andre has to go through this, and mentally, he did a great job," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "I'll tell you how well he handled it. When I subbed in Jonas [Jerebko] on that late sideout, he was [ticked], which was great."

TURNING POINT: Monroe scored on an uncontested layup with 39 seconds left to give the Pistons a 105-103 lead they never relinquished. Irving subsequently rushed up a 26-footer that was off the mark, beginning a Detroit parade to the charity stripe. Stuckey, Jerebko, and small forward Kyle Singler converted 6-for-8 free throws in the final 18 seconds as the Pistons ended the contest on an 8-1 run. "These are the guys we're building around, and I've got to fight for them," Frank said. "I felt comfortable leaving them out there at the end."

HOT: Drummond made his first nine field goal attempts and finished the evening 10-for-11 from the floor (.909). The Connecticut product took all 11 of his shots under the basket, making seven dunks and three layups, but missing one alley-oop. ... Pistons point guard Will Bynum played the entire fourth quarter and scored 12 points. ... Detroit won back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 8-9. ... Cavaliers shooting guard Dion Waiters (left knee soreness) returned from a 10-game absence and scored 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench. ... Cleveland power forward Tristan Thompson collected 19 points and eight rebounds.

NOT: Irving is shooting 29-for-86 (.337) from the floor since returning from a sprained left shoulder four games ago, including 7-for-24 on 3-pointers (.292). ... Cavaliers center Tyler Zeller and small forward Alonzo Gee combined for zero points, zero rebounds, and zero assists in 26 first-half minutes. ... Cleveland is 2-12 since March 15, and has the third-worst home record in the NBA at 14-25. ... The Cavaliers committed 17 fouls in the fourth quarter, which lasted 50 minutes and saw the Pistons go 17-for-27 from the foul line. ... Detroit power forward Charlie Villanueva missed three shots and went scoreless off the bench.

QUOTABLE III: "Andre always is a big force for us at the defensive end and he's great at crashing the boards, like you saw. I was proud of him for the way he made free throws tonight. He's going to be a great player for us."

GOOD MOVE: Frank resisted the urge to take Drummond out of the game during the Cavaliers' fourth-quarter foul fest, citing his ability to defend the basket. "The great thing about Andre is he struggled a little bit in the first half, but he kept fighting and came back strong," the coach explained. "He works on his foul shooting every day with [assistant coach] Dee Brown, and it showed in his confidence."

BAD MOVE: Reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Irving and fourth overall draft pick Waiters are unquestionably the Cavaliers' backcourt of the future, but were only on the court together for 2:14. Before the game, Cleveland coach Byron Scott said he planned on using the duo as often as possible in the final five contests of the regular season, but only did so sparingly in the second and fourth quarters.

NOTABLE: Pistons point guard Jose Calderon (right triceps strain) -- the NBA leader with a .461 3-point percentage -- missed his second game in a row. He traveled to Cleveland with the team and continues to be listed as day-to-day. ... Detroit center Jason Maxiell (season-ending detached retina surgery) did not accompany the Pistons on the road. ... The Cavaliers played without shooting guards C.J. Miles (concussion, forehead laceration) and Daniel Gibson (right elbow soreness), power forward Luke Walton (right ankle sprain), and center Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery).
