The Boston Celtics could be getting back their two top scorers at the same time.

There's a chance Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett will both return Sunday night at home when the Celtics try to defeat the visiting Washington Wizards for the seventh straight time.

Pierce sat out Friday's 97-91 loss to lowly Cleveland with a sore left ankle, but returned to practice Saturday and should play against Washington (29-47).

Garnett's injury is more serious as he has missed the last eight games with inflammation in his left ankle.

"I have some issues with my foot and more from like the motion of the foot, just pressing it and pushing it like a gas pedal," he said. "It's an issue. If it isn't, I wouldn't be out."

The 15-time All-Star also practiced Saturday but it's unclear if he will play. Coach Doc Rivers certainly knows what he would like to see Sunday.

"He's been out a while and the playoffs are soon so the sooner he gets back out on the floor, the better and I would lean to him now that once he's cleared health-wise, it's probably better for him even if he can't play a lot of minutes to play in games because no matter what we do in practice, practice will never duplicate a game," Rivers said.

Boston (39-37) is trying to maintain its hold on seventh place in the Eastern Conference in order to avoid a first-round matchup with Miami. The Celtics lead eighth-place Milwaukee by two games.

"Obviously we're playing for something and obviously we're trying to get things done as we're out here playing so that's pretty much what it is," Garnett said.

Boston has dropped eight of 11, going 3-5 without Garnett in that span.

The Celtics have taken every meeting with the Wizards over the past two seasons, winning twice this past November by a total of nine points.

Washington did not have John Wall back then and Boston had a healthy Rajon Rondo. Now the advantage at point guard figures to swing to the Wizards since they have improved significantly since the electric Wall has returned.

The third-year guard posted his second-highest scoring effort of the season with 37 points Saturday in Washington's ninth straight home victory, 104-85 over Indiana.

"I think whenever you're feeling good and you're playing good, you're more into the game," said Wall, who missed the first 33 games recovering from a knee injury. "You're more enthused, you're more happy. ... After all the stuff I've been through this season with injuries and missing so many games, and having people say what they say about me, it means a lot."

The Wizards have dropped their last four on the road, and five straight at Boston. Wall is shooting 39.9 percent on the road compared to 49.4 percent at home.

Washington is 6-13 in the second half of back-to-back games.

Garnett, Pierce return, help Celts beat Wizards

BOSTON (AP) Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce returned from injuries and the Boston Celtics dominated the Washington Wizards - thanks to Brandon Bass, the soft-spoken forward who rarely gets a play called for him.

But when he's open, his teammates are confident he can score.

"He seems to always be in the right spots, available," Pierce said after Bass scored 20 points to lead the Celtics to a 107-96 win Sunday night. "That's going to be huge for us if he continues to play well going into the playoffs, and the great thing about it is he's doing it all off of the hustle plays."

In the eight games Garnett missed with an inflamed left ankle, Bass averaged 12.3 points, raising his season average to 8.3. On Sunday, he shot 9 of 12 and added six rebounds.

"He's just efficient," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "Overall, I think he's playing terrific. I think he's in a wonderful place right now."

Garnett had 12 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes. Pierce finished with 15 points in 30 minutes after missing Friday night's 97-91 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers with a sore left ankle.

"Things flow a lot smoother when Kevin and Paul are out there because everything's being run through them and everybody else is just getting what they get from them," Bass said. "So it's a lot better when they're out (on the court). It doesn't matter if I get a play called. The ball will find me and, hopefully, I just make the shot."

Bass missed his season high by just two points and led the Celtics with eight points in the third quarter, when they hit 75 percent of their shots, outscored Washington 31-19 and stretched a 56-52 halftime lead to 87-71.

They're still missing Rajon Rondo and Jared Sullinger, both sidelined for the season, but led by at least 10 points the rest of the way to get just their fourth win in 12 games.

John Wall led Washington with 16 points but never got to the foul line as Boston outscored Washington 17-8 on free throws. A.J. Price had 15 points and Trevor Ariza added 14.

"We play a team like this and when you're not playing great defensively you have got to be able to make shots," Wall said, "and we had a tough night."

The Wizards hit just 44.5 percent of their shots. But in the second half they connected on only 41.5 percent, while the Celtics made 64.5 percent.

"It doesn't matter what lineup (we use) or who's on the floor as long as we're playing the right way," Garnett said. "That's all my concern is, just making sure that we're sharing the ball, playing as a team, giving up for each other, playing defensively."

The win ended a four-game stretch against weak teams in which the Celtics lost to Minnesota, beat Detroit, lost to Cleveland and beat Washington. With five games left and the Celtics trying to move up from seventh place in the Eastern Conference, the schedule gets tougher with a home game Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets before a road game Friday against the Miami Heat.

Washington fell to 7-31 on the road but is 23-20 overall since Wall returned from a shoulder injury.

"Against a team like this that's playing for something, who has a seed in the playoffs, they're going to keep competing," Wall said. "And they got everybody back tonight and they were clicking right away."

A dunk by Nene with 10:24 left in the third quarter had cut the Celtics' lead to 58-57, but they went on a 29-14 surge the rest of the period.

The Celtics began the spurt with a 14-1 run, starting with a layup by Avery Bradley. Pierce hit another layup and Bradley followed with a 16-footer. Martell Webster sank a free throw for the Wizards after Garnett was called for a technical foul with 7:57 left in the quarter. But Emeka Okafor then missed two free throws for Washington.

Boston scored the next eight points on a 14-foot jumper by Bass, two free throws by Shavlik Randolph, an 18-footer by Jason Terry and a dunk by Bass.

Ariza then scored Washington's first field goal in nearly six minutes when Randolph was called for goaltending with 4:39 left in the period, cutting Boston's lead to 72-60.

"We had that stretch in the third quarter where we struggled offensively and they were clicking offensively," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said, "and that was the difference."

Notes: Washington forward Trevor Booker left the game with a bruised tailbone with 5:42 left in the first half and didn't return. ... Chris Wilcox had 13 points for Boston, one below his season high. ... The Celtics swept the three-game season series. ... Jordan Crawford had six points in 16 minutes in his first game against the Wizards since being traded on Feb. 21. He had been upset with his diminished playing time in Washington.

THE FACTS: Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett returned to the floor for the Boston Celtics, helping lift the hosts past the Washington Wizards with a 107-96 victory on Sunday.

Garnett (12 points, six rebounds) and Pierce (15 points, five assists) looked sharp back in action, as they set the tone offensively for the Celtics (40-37), who shot 55 percent from the field. Brandon Bass had a game-high 20 points, as the Celtics pulled away after outscoring the Wizards 31-19 in the third quarter. John Wall posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists for the Wizards (29-48) in the loss.

QUOTABLE: "It's good to be playing the best basketball at the right time, and right now is the right time going into the playoffs for some guys to get their confidence going and start having some big games."

THE STAT: The Celtics shot a scorching 75 percent (12-for-16) from the field during their 31-point third quarter.

TURNING POINT: After a back-and-forth contest through the first half, the Celtics separated themselves at the start of the third quarter with a 16-3 run to build a double-digit lead they never relinquished.

GOOD MOVE: Celtics coach Doc Rivers elected to go with a very big starting lineup featuring Pierce at the shooting guard spot, and Jeff Green at small forward upon Garnett's return to the lineup. The group performed well in their starting debut, exploiting mismatches against a smaller Wizards lineup in the backcourt.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought he was really good. And I thought his rhythm was good early. I was surprised how well he was running. I noticed that yesterday in practice. "

HOT: Bass -- After struggling through the first couple months of the season, the veteran power forward has found his stride in the past few weeks. Bass made 8 of his 11 shot attempts on the night, and has scored in double digits during 12 of the Celtics' past 15 games.

NOT: Nene -- The Brazilian big man failed to find a rhythm on either end of the floor against a feisty Celtics' frontcourt. Nene shot just 33 percent from the field, while also doing little to contest strong performances by Shavlik Randolph and Chris Wilcox off the bench.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wall -- The third-year point guard continued his fantastic all-around play during the month of April. Wall tallied 16 points, 10 assists and three rebounds in the setback. Over his last five games, Wall is averaging 25 points, five rebounds and 7.5 assists per game.

NOTABLE: Wilcox finished with 13 points, one point short of his season-high. ... The Celtics notched their 40th win of the season, the 44th time in franchise history the team has won 40 or more games. ... Randolph was forced to leave the game in the second quarter with a bloody nose, but he did return. ... Trevor Booker left the game in the second quarter with a bruised tailbone and did not return. ... Jordan Crawford scored six points in the first game against his former team, which dealt him to Boston at the trade deadline. ... With the win, Boston swept the three-game season series against Washington. ... Pierce won the Red Auerbach Award before the game, an honor given to a Celtic every season for strong work, on and off the floor. ...
