MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Sitting on 999 career victories, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman is on the brink of joining an exclusive club that is sure to bring some long overdue attention his way.

After failing in their first bid to help Adelman become the eighth coach in NBA history to win 1,000 career games, the Timberwolves host the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

"I've said it many times, I think he's the most underrated coach in the league. ... Even the guys that he's coached in the past that are on other teams now, they still do the things that he taught them offensively," San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's very creative in that sense. ... He's one of those guys, he doesn't try to get the camera. He couldn't care less. He just wants to do his job and go home. And he does it well."

One more win would put Adelman on a list with Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Pat Riley, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, Larry Brown and George Karl as men who had the staying power, resilience and coaching chops to climb to this summit.

He came close to reaching the milestone Friday night, but the Timberwolves lost 95-93 at home to Toronto. Minnesota led by as many as 11 in the second half but missed 10 free throws, including one from Ricky Rubio with 1.7 seconds to go that would have tied the game.

Rubio, who finished with 13 points and 12 assists, held his head in his hands after missing the last free throw, clearly disappointed he couldn't help his coach get his 1,000th victory.

"It's hard to lose like that, especially how the game went," Rubio said. "It's something that we wanted to win so bad."

Adelman took the Blazers to two NBA finals in 5 1/2 seasons, followed that up with two tough years with Golden State, then turned Sacramento into one of the most exciting teams in the league at the turn of the century. He weathered injuries to stars Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming in Houston to bring the Rockets to the playoffs twice in four seasons - winning 22 straight games in 2008 - before coming to Minnesota in 2011.

"I don't know how to say it, but I'm so happy to be with that coach," Rubio said. "It seems like he knows everything. I feel comfortable with him. It's something that he has and you can't explain it. Once you are on his team, he's giving you advice, it's like a clinic every single day.

"He lets us play and that's pretty cool for me. I like when I'm out there and playing like it's a playground and it's the NBA. It's fun."

In a week that has been dominated by video of former Rutgers coach Mike Rice's abusive behavior toward his players, Adelman's low-key approach stands out even more. He rarely raises his voice, prefers to stay in the background and lets his players receive all the attention.

"I don't know what a player's coach is, but I know it's a players' league and you better understand that," Adelman said. "It's your job to get the players to respond in a positive way, to put them in a position to succeed and put the team in position to succeed. They're going to respond to that."

There have been a few rough seasons along the way. When you're around for 22 years, how can there not be? But none have been as trying as this one. A team that started with playoff aspirations has languished under the weight of a litany of injuries and Adelman missed 11 games to be with his wife, who was treated for seizures.

Her condition, while improved lately, has caused Adelman to consider calling it a career when the season is over. He said now is not the time to discuss his future. There won't be any playoffs this year for him and a second straight losing season is already assured. But he said he'd be lying if he didn't think about getting No. 1,000, and his players want that even more than he does.

"He deserves it, especially this year," Rubio said. "He stayed with the team and he has all my respect for that. We just want to make a run here and give him good news."

Rubio and Nikola Pekovic have helped the Timberwolves (28-47) play better of late, winning five of nine following a 3-12 stretch. Pekovic had 24 points and eight rebounds Friday and is averaging 26.7 points in three games after missing one with a sprained left ankle.

He had 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 105-82 rout of Detroit (25-51) on March 26, the Timberwolves' fifth straight win in the series.

The Pistons lost for the 14th time in 16 games Wednesday, 98-93 in Boston. Greg Monroe had 24 points and 17 rebounds and Rodney Stuckey scored 22 as Detroit shot 36.6 percent, including 4 for 24 from 3-point range.

Reserve Charlie Villanueva was the biggest culprit, missing 15 of 17 shots overall and going 0 for 8 from beyond the arc.

"Just a rough night for me offensively. Couldn't buy a basket," Villanueva said. "Seems like there was a lid on the rim for me."

Adelman gets 1,000th W in Wolves' 107-101 win

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The final seconds ticked down on Rick Adelman's 1,000th career victory, and a season's worth of hardship and heartache quickly evaporated. As his players surrounded him to celebrate, the 66-year-old basketball lifer quickly disengaged from the crowd, and everyone in the arena knew where he was headed.

His wife Mary Kay, his partner of four decades, the mother of his six children and the center of his universe, waited sheepishly at the corner of the court. Still head over heels for each other all these years later, the couple embraced. He kissed her once, twice, three times. An unforgettable moment in a painfully disappointing season that most agree can't end soon enough.

Adelman became the eighth coach in NBA history to win 1,000 games when the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Detroit Pistons 107-101 on Saturday night.

There were impressive performances on the court to make it happen, but what everyone will remember more than anything else was that moment for a curmudgeonly coach who missed 11 games earlier this season to be with Mary Kay while she was treated for seizures.

"She had to be part of it," Rick Adelman said. "I told her I was going to bring her down. She wasn't very happy about that. She's been there all these years. When you go through a job like this and situations and you move and you raise six kids and everything else, if it wasn't for her I never could have done it. That's why I'm really glad to do it here."

Nikola Pekovic had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and J.J. Barea scored 20 points for the Timberwolves, who surrounded their 66-year-old coach when the buzzer sounded. A brief video tribute was played, and a 29-47 season suddenly felt like a playoff run.

"He deserves it," Ricky Rubio said. "What he did this season, it's amazing. He stayed with the team. He had some issues, but he gets through those issues and still gets with us. That means a lot. I admire that. I want to say thank you for everything he did for us, staying with us in tough moments. Even when, for him, it was even tougher. That's leadership. He shows us how to do it."

Brandon Knight scored 25 points and Rodney Stuckey had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost 18 of their last 21 games. They turned the ball over a season-high 24 times, leading to 25 points for Minnesota.

"It's phenomenal, unbelievable," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said of Adelman's achievement. "I'll say it for the millionth time, he's one of the most underrated coaches in this game. He's a phenomenal teacher. For him to do it at every single stop with the consistency he's done, he's a tremendous, tremendous, tremendous coach."

Adelman is now 1,000-703 in his 22-year career. He joins Don Nelson, Lenny Wilkens, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan, Larry Brown and George Karl in the exclusive club.

"It's incredible," Adelman said. "I never, ever expected to be with that group. I've had some really special situations. We were able to stay at a couple places a long time, which doesn't happen in this league very often. Good players involved, good coaches involved, good organizations involved."

Like many of his 999 previous wins, this one didn't come easy for Adelman. The Timberwolves opened a 10-point lead early in the second half against a team that was 0-14 on the road against Western Conference teams. But after sitting almost the entire second quarter, Derrick Williams couldn't find the rhythm he had early and the Pistons reeled off 11 straight points to take the lead.

Rubio missed his first 12 shots from the field, but hit a 17-footer with 54 seconds to play that put the Wolves up 102-99. Luke Ridnour then went 1 for 2 from the line, but Pekovic tapped out the offensive board, and Ridnour sunk two more to seal it.

"It has been really a tough season, so we have to celebrate these special moments even a little bit more," owner Glen Taylor said.

Adelman likes to say he never thought about getting 1,000 wins. He was just focused on getting one. When he took over for the fired Mike Schuler in Portland in 1989, the Blazers dropped his first four games. Win No. 1 came on Feb. 26, 1989, against Miami, and they continued to pile up through stops in Golden State, Sacramento, Houston and Minnesota over the last two decades.

"This is a very volatile league and for Rick to have endured this long is really a testament to his style," Timberwolves president David Kahn said. "He has a style that wears very well and easily with players. The highs aren't too high and the lows aren't too low and he picks his spots very judiciously. You don't earn this record without being very, very good at what you do and being very, very capable of relating to people. He hits both marks."

The Wolves started the season with playoff aspirations, but a litany of injuries - and Adelman's absence in January to tend to Mary Kay - helped bring that crashing down. He has said he will make a decision on returning next season when he determines how his wife is doing. Her condition has stabilized, but doctors are still trying to find the right combinations of medication.

She wouldn't have been able to make the trip out west that begins on Tuesday, so there was a big sense of urgency to get this one.

"It was extremely special, especially because she was here," Wolves assistant David Adelman said. "She deserved to be there. Going on the road, it's just different. It's cool to do it here."

NOTES: Rubio was given a warning by the NBA for flopping when he tried to draw a charge against Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant last week. ... Pistons PG Jose Calderon returned to the lineup after missing the previous game with a sore right arm. He had six points. ... It was the second time this year Stuckey has scored at least 20 in back-to-back games.

THE FACTS: NBA history was made in Minneapolis tonight as Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman became the eighth coach to reach 1,000 career victories in the Wolves' 107-101 win over the Detroit Pistons.

J.J. Barea sparked a balanced Wolves' (29-47) effort with 20 points off the bench, while Nikola Pekovic added 20 points and 13 rebounds as part of seven Timberwolves in double figures. Brandon Knight racked up 25 points in the losing effort for the struggling Pistons (25-52), who have lost 18 of their past 21 games.

In his 22nd season, Adelman joins an exclusive club of NBA coaching names including Pat Riley, Lenny Wilkins, Phil Jackson, George Karl, Larry Brown, Don Nelson and Jerry Sloan. The milestone has fueled speculation about whether Adelman will return for a 23rd season -- particularly given the trials of a year lost to injuries on the court, and the ongoing health difficulties of his wife, Mary Kay, off the court. Regardless of his choice, his legacy seems clear among the list of elite coaches. Spurs coach Greg Popovich was recently quoted as saying Adelman is the, "Most underrated coach of our era, generation, time -- whatever you want to call it."

THE STAT: Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams, two of the main contributors to the Wolves season, were born in 1990 and 1991 -- well after Adelman won his first NBA game in Portland in 1988.

TURNING POINT: After a 13-4 Pistons run that tied the score at 83 early in the fourth quarter, Greg Monroe stole the ball and looked to have an uncontested dunk until the much smaller Dante Cunningham swooped in at the last moment for a surprising block. Cunningham then went on a mini 5-0 run himself to give the Wolves some immediate breathing room at a moment when the momentum had clearly swung in Detroit's favor.

HOT: One night after playing a miserable 15 minutes in which he was held scoreless with just two assists, Barea attacked the teeth of the Pistons defense relentlessly over 21 minutes, scoring his 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting while also handing out six assists. Barea's efforts were critical to the victory on a night when the starting backcourt of Rubio and Luke Ridnour combined to shoot 2-for-19 from the field.

NOT: The Detroit Pistons laid a goose egg against the Western conference away from home this year, finishing 0-15 for the season. Even the abysmal Charlotte Bobcats of 2011-2012 (7-59) managed to beat the New Orleans Hornets on the road on the way to putting up the worst NBA winning percentage in history.

ROOKIE WATCH: Pistons forward Andre Drummond is having a bit of an audition over the final few games of the year. Frank said he wants to give him 24 minutes a game or more, and he inserted Drummond in the starting lineup tonight. He played 31 minutes and finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. The rookie out of Connecticut is a definite factor in the middle and looks to be a major part of the Pistons rebuilding effort in 2013-14.

GOOD MOVE: The Timberwolves hiring Adelman on September 13, 2011. April in the NBA can be filled with team experimentation and players mailing it in on game night, and the Wolves were certainly guilty of this in the few years before Adelman came on board. However, Adelman continues to preach the importance of playing hard every night in order to build a culture of winning, even if the playoff are out of reach. His consistent pregame message is every game matters in the process as teams learn to expect to win.

QUOTABLE V: "Glad we got it done tonight. Our guys hung in there and made some plays down the stretch to win the game. Like I said earlier, it's a great group of players who stayed with us all year long and never stopped playing. They kept battling it through; the coaching staff too."

NOTABLE: Kevin Love has still not been cleared for contact and is now likely out for the remainder of the season. ... Pekovic has now collected an offensive rebound in 72 consecutive games, the second longest active streak in the NBA (Love, 75 straight games). ... The last coach to get to 1,000 games was Nuggets coach George Karl who hit the mark on December 11, 2010, against the Toronto Raptors. ... The Pistons could rebuild quickly next year as they have up to a massive $30 million in cap space heading into the offseason.
