While the Houston Rockets pulled out two wins with James Harden sidelined, his all-around effort proved key during their latest victory.

The Rockets try to win four straight for the first time in almost three months Friday night when they visit the injury-plagued and slumping Portland Trail Blazers.

After beating the Los Angeles Clippers and Orlando with Harden sidelined due to a sore right foot, Houston's leading scorer returned Wednesday in a 112-102 win at Sacramento. Harden, averaging 25.9 points to rank fifth in the NBA, had 21, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Chandler Parsons also came up big with 29 points after sitting out against the Magic with an illness. Houston hasn't posted four consecutive victories since a season best-tying five-game run Dec. 31-Jan. 8.

"It was great to have James and Chandler back," said Omer Asik, who had 19 points and 10 rebounds. "We knew we had to come in here and play hard."

In seventh place in the Western Conference, the Rockets (42-33) have yet to clinch a playoff berth. Houston is three games ahead of the Lakers and one behind sixth-place Golden State.

"This was a big win for us on the road," Harden said. "Golden State is doing a good job of keeping their lead and winning games. We need to do everything we can to keep winning going into the playoffs."

Houston has to like its chances of keeping things going against Portland (33-42), which has been outscored by an average of 17.1 points during its skid. The Trail Blazers also lost a season-high seven straight Feb. 6-22.

While LaMarcus Aldridge's possible return from a four-game absence due to a sprained ankle would surely help, Portland is likely to be without Nicolas Batum, who also missed Wednesday's 94-76 loss to Memphis with a labral tear in his shoulder.

In addition to rookie of the year favorite Damian Lillard, the Blazers started two other first-year players against the Grizzlies. Meyers Leonard had 10 points and seven rebounds and Victor Claver scored seven.

"You hate to lose and you hate to lose at home," coach Terry Stotts said. "You want to take away opportunities to teach and to get better particularly with the young guys. More importantly, I want to make sure we continue to play the right way, to play hard, to get better, all the things that you need to do."

While their playoff hopes have all but faded, the 11th-place Blazers refuse to go down easy.

"We just have to play for each other," said J.J. Hickson, who had 17 points and nine rebounds Wednesday. "You sit in the locker room and you look at guys, you look at the guy next to you. That's what it's all about. It's playing for us and not giving in. Just finish out the season strong to have some momentum for next year. We know the playoffs - it's getting gloomier and gloomier."

Aldridge has averaged 29.0 points - 8.0 more than his season mark - on 53.5 percent shooting in three matchups against the Rockets this season. Batum averaged 25.3 in those games, including a career-high 35 in a 119-117 overtime victory Nov. 16.

The Blazers also pulled out a 95-85 overtime road win Nov. 3, but they dropped the last matchup 118-103 at Houston on Feb. 8. Harden had 35 points and 11 assists that night.

Portland will also need to be wary of Jeremy Lin, who's totaled 34 points and 21 assists in recording back-to-back double-doubles.

Rockets defeat Blazers 116-98

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Two more wins - or a win and a little help - and the Houston Rockets clinch a spot in the playoffs.

So they certainly weren't taking the slumping Portland for granted on Friday night when they thumped the Trail Blazers 116-98.

James Harden had 33 points and Jeremy Lin added 22 for the Rockets, who were without forward Chandler Parsons because of a calf injury.

"We did a pretty good job of staying aggressive and taking the ball to the basket," Harden said. "We were getting in the paint and staying in attack mode."

Houston (43-33) remained in seventh place in the Western Conference - three games in front of the Los Angeles Lakers - for its first playoff appearance since 2008-09.

The Rockets play at Denver on Saturday night before hosting Phoenix on Tuesday.

LaMarcus Aldridge returned from an ankle injury with 32 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers (33-43), who matched their season-worst slide with a seventh straight loss.

The Blazers were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Afterward, Wesley Matthews questioned the team's heart.

"It's not even about that (the playoffs)," Matthews said, vowing to have a talk with his team on Saturday. "We've got to play like this is the blessing it is."

Parsons, who is averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds, sustained a right calf injury late in Houston's 112-102 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. The injury does not appear serious.

Houston was also without Carlos Delfino because of the flu.

Harden had 17 points in the first quarter. His jumper gave the Rockets a 27-22 lead but the Blazers stayed close, paced by Aldridge's 14 points and six rebounds in the period.

Houston took off on an 11-0 run to go up 44-33 on Donatas Motiejunas' layup and extended it to 59-40 on Harden's layup with 3:40 left in the half.

Portland responded with a 14-1 run to narrow the gap to 60-54 and wound up trailing 63-56 at the half. Aldridge led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds at the break.

Francisco Garcia's dunk made it 89-62 for the Rockets midway through the third quarter. Harden's short jumper pushed the lead to 110-90 with 5:35 left, and Portland fans started streaming for the exits.

Lin said the key was ball movement.

"If you look at the games we build leads, ball movement is what we do," he said. "Then you look at the games we give up leads and that (ball movement) is what we fail to do. It's pretty clear to us we can be two different teams, one that moves the ball and one that doesn't."

Rockets rookie Terrence Jones made his first appearance as a pro in his native Portland, playing for 14 minutes. Jones led Jefferson High School to three straight Oregon state titles before going to Kentucky, where he was part of the Wildcats' NCAA championship team last season.

Before the game, Jones was asked how many tickets he requested. "A lot," he said.

It was Jones' 13th appearance this season. He had 14 points in Wednesday night's win over the Kings.

Aldridge appeared healthy after missing four games because of a right ankle sprain. But the Blazers were still without Nicolas Batum, who has missed two games with a sore right shoulder. Victor Claver started in his absence.

Aldridge, who leads the NBA with seven games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds, didn't agree with Matthews' assessment that the Blazers lacked heart.

"I think the effort was there," Aldridge said. "We've just got to play smarter."

Notes: Blazers guard Damian Lillard on Friday won the league's Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors for the fifth straight month. He is the only Blazer to win the honor five times, and he's the first NBA player to win it the first five months of the season since Blake Griffin in 2010-11. The 6-foot-3 point guard averaged 21.3 points, 6.8 assists and 2.9 rebounds in March. ... Blazers forward Sasha Pavlovic made his first appearance in a game for Portland since late February. ... It was Houston's 11th consecutive game with 100 more points. ... The two teams split the season series with two wins apiece.

THE FACTS: James Harden went for 33 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Houston Rockets blew away the Portland Trail Blazers 116-98 Friday night at the Rose Garden.

Jeremy Lin collected 22 points and eight assists and Greg Smith added 19 points for Houston (43-33), which won its fourth straight game to stay a game behind Golden State in seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Trail Blazers (33-43), who lost for the seventh consecutive time.

QUOTABLE: "Harden makes that team go. I'm not saying he's LeBron, but he's like LeBron in that he likes to pass the ball, he's so good at the pick-and-roll and he's so hard to guard."

THE STAT: Houston shot superbly, firing at a .513 clip from the field, including .429 (12 for 28) from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: After Portland trimmed a seven-point halftime deficit to 68-63 early in the third quarter, the Rockets revved up the motors again, taking a 92-77 advantage into the final period.

QUOTABLE II: "I got myself going a little bit with my body tonight. That allowed me to move the basketball and be in attack mode for the entire game, rather than just holding the ball and trying to make plays stagnant."

HOT: The Rockets were smoking early, knocking down 6 of their first 7 shots from beyond the arc and shooting .556 from the field in mounting a 35-31 lead after one quarter.

NOT: Portland's Wesley Matthews was 1-for-11 on 3-point attempts. Overall, Matthews and backcourt mate Damian Lillard combined for 10-for-31 shooting.

GOOD MOVE: Portland rookie Will Barton made the hustle play of the night, lunging near the end line to retrieve a ball, then firing it at a Rocket's leg, bouncing it out of bounds.

BAD MOVE: Moments later, Barton had the ball at the hoop in transition but laid a pass back to teammate Meyers Leonard. A surprised Leonard caught the pass but missed the layup.

QUOTABLE III: "They were both aggressive. They had a lot of dump-offs for Greg [Smith] and our bigs. They did a nice job of getting into the paint and breaking down the [Portland] defense."

NOTABLE: It was the 20th time this season that Houston, which averages 106.0 points, scored 116 or more. ... the Rockets won the battle in fast-break points 28-14. ... Aldridge moved past Mychal Thompson into seventh place on the Portland career scoring list with 9,221 points. ... Aldridge leads the NBA with seven games of at least 30 points and 10 rebounds. Miami's James has six. ... Aldridge, who tied a career high with his 36th double-double of the campaign, had 24 points and 10 rebounds by halftime. The last player to achieve such numbers before intermission was Charlotte's Gerald Wallace in January 2010.
