The New York Knicks are the new owners of the NBA's longest active winning streak and have their sights set on making noise in the playoffs as one of the Eastern Conference's top seeds.

That outlook can't be shared by the league-worst Charlotte Bobcats, though they're working just as hard to achieve their rather modest goal of climbing out of the cellar.

New York seeks a seventh consecutive victory and fifth straight over Charlotte when these teams meet Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks (44-26) have bounced back from a season worst-tying four-game skid and extended their run with a 108-101 victory over Memphis on Wednesday to open a three-game homestand.

New York is averaging 102.2 points during the winning streak compared to 81.8 during its skid, and it now owns the league's longest current run after Miami's 27-game win streak ended at Chicago on Wednesday.

"We had to put (the losing streak) behind us," said Iman Shumpert, who scored 16 points against Memphis. "Right now we're rolling and we're going to keep rolling going into the playoffs. We knew once we got a win and strung a couple together we'd get that (confidence) back."

The Knicks lead Brooklyn by 2 1/2 games for first place in the Atlantic Division and are battling Indiana for the East's second seed.

"It's coming down the stretch run and every game is important," coach Mike Woodson said. "We're playing that way, and that's how it should be at this point in the season. We're trying to stay at the top of our division and we're in the running for the (No. 2 seed). There's a lot of things at stake and our guys are putting forth the energy and it's converting to wins."

J.R. Smith has been one of the catalysts lately, following a 32-point performance in Tuesday's 100-85 victory at Boston with 35 on Wednesday. He's averaging 24.7 points during the winning streak.

"That's the J.R. we all know about," Carmelo Anthony said. "He's locked in and extremely focused on helping his team win basketball games. That's what we need from him."

With Anthony injured toward the end of the Dec. 5 meeting with the Bobcats, Smith nailed a fadeaway jumper as time expired to give the Knicks a 100-98 road victory.

It marked their eighth win in 10 matchups against Charlotte (17-54), which is hoping to avoid finishing with the NBA's worst record for the second straight season.

The Bobcats went 7-59 in the 2011-12 lockout-shortened campaign, resulting in a .106 winning percentage that set a league record for futility. With that dubious mark still etched in their minds, they've gone 3-2 over their last five and defeated Orlando 114-108 on Wednesday.

Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson each scored 34 points for Charlotte, which owns the league's worst record by one-half game behind the Magic.

"You never want to be seen as the worst team, regardless of how your season has gone," Henderson said. "Last year we were the undisputed worst team."

Walker, averaging 26.3 points over his last three, is looking ahead rather than in the past.

"We want to finish off this season strong and get some confidence so we know what we can do for next season," said Walker, who scored 25 points in the first matchup with New York. "We have to start building."

The Knicks have won 10 of 14 all-time meetings at Madison Square Garden.

Smith has 37, Knicks beat Bobcats for 7th straight

NEW YORK (AP) J.R. Smith hasn't had a run like this since high school.

No NBA reserve has in more than two decades.

Smith scored 37 points, his third consecutive 30-point outing, and the New York Knicks beat the Charlotte Bobcats 111-102 on Friday night for their season-high seventh straight victory.

"He is focused. He is dialed in. Locked in," Carmelo Anthony said. "He is playing extremely well and his confidence is sky high. We are following his lead."

Anthony had 32 points and Raymond Felton added 18 for the Knicks, who have the longest current streak in the NBA. They built a 30-point lead that was reduced to single digits for the second game in a row.

Gerald Henderson tied a career high with 35 points for the Bobcats. Kemba Walker added 16, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 14 and Ben Gordon finished with 12.

Smith had 23 points at halftime, shooting 9 of 11 from the field. He is the first player with three straight 30-point games as a reserve since Ricky Pierce in 1990.

"Last run I was on like this was in high school and that was too easy," Smith said. "But, I got a great cast with Melo and Ray. We have so many threats out there. It's hard to honor each person every game. So depending on who's got it going, it just so happens it's my turn."

The Knicks held their biggest lead of the game at 58-28 when Smith hit a 3-pointer with 5:24 left in the first half. The Bobcats then went on a 19-9 run to pull within 20 before Anthony's two free throws gave the Knicks a 69-47 halftime lead.

After shooting 62.5 percent (25 of 40) from the field and 75 percent (9 of 12) from 3-point range in the first half, the Knicks went cold in the third quarter, going 5 of 18 from the field and missing all four shots behind the arc.

The Bobcats took advantage and pulled within 83-69 on Jeffery Taylor's free throws with 39 seconds left in the quarter.

However, Felton's layup and three free throws by Smith gave the Knicks an 88-69 lead after three quarters.

The Knicks' struggles persisted in the fourth quarter and the Bobcats continued to cut their deficit. Gordon's 3-pointer with 2:57 left brought Charlotte within 102-93 and Josh McRoberts followed with a dunk with 2:05 to go and the Knicks' lead was down to seven.

"At the end of the day, we've got to find ways to close games better," Felton said. "Against a team that might be a little bit better than the Bobcats, it could go either way."

Smith hit a short floater with 1:02 left. Then, after Henderson's two free throws again brought the Bobcats within seven, Anthony hit two free throws, Smith made one, and Anthony sank a jumper to secure the victory.

"We got a lot of fight," Henderson said. "It's just tough when you see you're down 30. It's hard to see the light. We got a lot of guys with pride and a lot heart. We just couldn't come up with it at the end of the game."

Charlotte took its only lead on the game's opening basket by Henderson.

The Knicks shot 83.3 percent from 3-point range (5 of 6) in the first quarter and took a 38-20 lead. They didn't commit a turnover in the period, while the Bobcats had six.

"You like to win big when you are up big, but to me a win is a win," said Knicks coach Mike Woodson. "But, we are not closing it out the way we should."

But they are opening them the way they should, and their Atlantic Division lead is up to 3 1/2 games over the Nets.

NOTES: The Knicks recorded their last seven-game winning streak from Feb. 4-15, 2012. ... The Knick have beaten the Bobcats five straight times. The Bobcats' last win in this series was a 118-110 victory on Jan. 4, 2012. The Knicks won the teams' only other meeting this season, 100-98, on Dec. 5 in Charlotte. ... Tyson Chandler missed his ninth straight game for the Knicks with a bulging disc. ... The Knicks have produced 30-point leads in consecutive games for the first time since doing it in back-to-back games against Portland and Indiana on March 14 and 16, 2012, according to STATS, LLC.

Notebook: Knicks 111, Bobcats 102

THE FACTS: The New York Knicks put the Charlotte Bobcats away in the first half and then coasted to an important 111-102 victory Friday night, pulling into a tie with the Pacers in the race for the Eastern second seed.

J.R. Smith kept up his inspiring play, scoring 37 points off the bench. Carmelo Anthony scored 13 first-quarter points and finished the game with 32 points and 11 rebounds on 11-for-28 shooting from the floor for the Knicks (45-26). Kemba Walker shot 6-for-19 and finished with 16 points and five turnovers for the Bobcats (17-55). Rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who played his high school ball in New Jersey, finished with a quiet 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kenyon Martin started again in the absence of Tyson Chandler. He finished with six points and six rebounds, but he also had three blocks and set a handful of devastating screens.

QUOTABLE: "[Smith] is focused.. He is dialed in, locked in. He is playing extremely well and his confidence is sky high. We are following his lead."

THE STAT: The Knicks scored 69 points and shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half including 75 percent from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: Raymond Felton threw down a rare dunk with 7:12 to go in the first quarter. That followed three consecutive Knicks' 3-point shots to start the game. This one was over in a hurry.

QUOTABLE II: "[Smith is] putting the ball well. He loves golf so we talk golf all the time. He's putting those 10-footers quite well. ... He hasn't hit a bad drive. He's playing as well as anybody right now."

WHO'S HOT: Smith is very hot. He finished the first half with 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting. The Bobcats ran their two defensive stoppers, Jeff Taylor and Kidd-Gilchrest, at him but it didn't matter. Smith got to the rim at will. He finished the night with a career high 37 on 12-for-18 shooting. In the last three games, he's scored 104 points on 35-for-60 shooting.

WHO'S NOT: The Bobcats' defense. Coach Mike Dunlap has a reputation for being a great defensive schemer, but he's had a hard time in Charlotte. The Bobcats have the league's worst defense allowing 109.1 points per 100 possessions. They didn't look any better tonight, allowing 69 first half points.

QUOTABLE III: "I haven't been on a streak like this since high school."

NOTABLE: Smith became the first-ever Knick to come off the bench and score 30 or more points in three consecutive games.

QUOTABLE IV: "Anybody can jack up a 3. Can you go get a solid two? Can you get to the rim and get fouled? Perhaps you'll get a three-point play that way. That was my whole argument with J.R. He was just settling. But here as of late he's been pretty good at mixing it up. ...His all around game is solid right now."
