Pacers-Rockets Preview

There is no question that the Indiana Pacers are one of the league's deepest teams, but the Central Division leaders would prefer to have their entire roster available at once.

They could move closer to full strength Wednesday night if Lance Stephenson and David West return for the start of a four-game trip that kicks off against a resurgent Houston Rockets team.

Without Stephenson (strained right hip flexor), point guard George Hill (strained left groin), Danny Granger (sore left knee) and West (sprained lower back), Indiana (44-27) rebounded from Saturday's 87-84 loss at Chicago with a 100-94 victory over Atlanta on Monday.

Starting for the first time since Dec. 15, Gerald Green led six Pacers in double figures with 19 points - 17 in the second half - to help Indiana move closer to its first division title since 2003-04.

"I feel good about our depth," coach Frank Vogel said. "If a guy goes down, it won't be the end of the world for us."

That may be true, but Indiana could use all the healthy bodies it can get as it's percentage points behind New York for the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

Vogel said on Tuesday that Stephenson will probably play against the Rockets, while West could return after missing the last five games. Granger and Hill might see action on Thursday versus Dallas.

Losers of three of four on the road, the Pacers will get their second look at the Rockets (39-31) this season after defeating them 105-95 on Jan. 18. Paul George had 31 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists to go with his seven 3-pointers.

"Offensively, he's so talented," Rockets forward Chandler Parsons told the team's official website. "He can shoot the ball, he can handle it and he's a great player. I get hyped for every game but when you play against a guy like Paul, you definitely get more hyped, especially since he hit shots on me last game, you want to come in here and limit those."

Houston is not known for its defense - it's yielding 102.7 points per game - but the team has clamped down on that end during its season-high seven-game homestand, holding opponents to an average of 92.5 points. The Rockets are 5-1 during that stretch and are seventh in the West, 4 1/2 games ahead of the ninth seed. Houston's last playoff appearance came in 2008-09.

"We're growing," leading scorer James Harden said. "It took us some time, but we usually rely on our shots. If we're not making shots, we kind of give up on our defense. The last few weeks, it's been our defensive effort, holding teams down defensively and trying to get out and score our transition baskets."

Houston, which is 24-5 when limiting opponents to 101 points or less, is among the NBA's best with 18.4 fast-break points per game.

Harden, who is averaging a league-high 10.3 free-throw attempt, took just five on Jan. 18, hitting four. He also missed 14 of 19 field-goal attempts and finished with 17 points as his career-best streak of 22 straight games scoring 20 or more ended.

The Pacers, the league leader in field-goal defense at 41.4 percent, held the Rockets to 41.0 on Jan. 18.

Indiana has won two straight in this series and three of four in Houston following a 104-102 overtime victory on April 1.

Hibbert powers Pacers to 100-91 win over Rockets

HOUSTON (AP) Roy Hibbert scored a season-high 28 points against the Houston Rockets.

After the game, the 7-foot-2 center was much more interested in talking about Indiana's defense than his big offensive night.

Lance Stephenson added a season-high 21 points and Hibbert had 13 rebounds to lead the Pacers to a 100-91 victory over the Rockets on Wednesday night.

"From Day 1 I've said I wanted to be a defensive team," said Hibbert, who also had three blocks. "It's my job to go out there and clog the paint, get deflections and make sure they shoot a low percentage in the paint."

Pacers coach Frank Vogel raved about the defense of his team, which entered the game allowing the fewest points per game in the NBA.

"Our defense was sensational led by Paul George's matchup on James Harden, and Roy Hibbert's rim protection was off the charts," Vogel said. "He was only listed for three blocks, but he changed about 20 other plays that came to the rim. They weren't even shooting it once they got there and were just thinking pass."

Houston coach Kevin McHale said the Pacers did a good job of slowing down his offense.

"We didn't have any rhythm to our offense whatsoever," McHale said. "And the big thing was, when we did get in the paint, they challenged our shots and we bobbled some passes. They were just corralling everything."

The Pacers never trailed and led by as many as 19 points. Houston made several runs, once cutting the lead to four points, but Indiana answered each time to hold on for the victory.

The Central Division-leading Pacers weren't back to full strength but they certainly got a boost from the returns of Stephenson, who missed Indiana's last game with a strained right hip flexor, and George Hill, out last game with a strained left groin.

The Pacers were still missing Danny Granger, who has sat out the majority of the season with patellar tendinitis in his left knee, and David West, who sat out his sixth straight game with a lower back sprain.

"This was Roy Hibbert's best overall game," Vogel said. "And with David West out, we needed him to score more and be more of a post presence and he was terrific on the offensive end as well."

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Houston, which is seventh in the Western conference. The Rockets were led by Harden's 22 points and eight assists.

"It was a combination of things," Harden said of falling behind early. "We know they are a pretty good defensive team, but we didn't make shots and that hurt us from the beginning of the game."

The Pacers led by 11 entering the fourth but managed just two points in the first four minutes of the quarter to allow Houston to get within 84-79. Indiana scored the next six points, with four of them coming on free throws to make it 90-79.

Harden connected on a 3-pointer before sinking two free throws to get Houston within eight with about three minutes left. This time it was Paul George responded, knocking down a 3-pointer seconds later to extend the lead.

George and Tyler Hansbrough added 16 points apiece for Indiana. Hill had two points, five assists and four rebounds.

Greg Smith had 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for Houston.

Indiana was up by 10 early in third before Houston used an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 68-64 at the seven-minute mark. Harden had a steal and a dunk before Lin hit an off-balance layup and the ensuing free throw after a foul by Hill.

The Pacers ended the rally with a 7-1 spurt which pushed to lead back to 10 with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the quarter. Chandler Parsons had an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Harden after that, but George scored five quick points for Indiana to make it 80-67.

Indiana looked good from the start on Wednesday night as the team jumped out to a 10-2 lead and used another 10-2 run, that featured three dunks in less than a minute later in the quarter, to push the lead to 25-9.

They were up 35-19 entering the second quarter after a first period where they shot 60.9 percent. Houston missed 15 shots in the first quarter and had four turnovers.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Orlando Johnson extended Indiana's advantage to 48-29 eight minutes before halftime. The Pacers hot-shooting cooled down after that and the Rockets finally discovered some offense. Houston used a 13-2 run to get within 50-42 with five minutes left in the first half. Patrick Beverley started that spurt with a jump shot and scored seven of the Rockets points as they closed the gap.

A layup by Smith got Houston within six points with 2 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter, but a three-point play by Stephenson to end the quarter left Indiana up 58-49 at halftime.

Wednesday's game was much like Houston's trip to Indianapolis in January, when the Pacers raced out to a 31-18 lead after one quarter in a 105-95 win.

NOTES: It was Hibbert's fourth straight game with a double-double. ... Harden made just six of 24 shots. ... George had three steals.

THE FACTS: The Indiana Pacers landed the first punch and never allowed the Houston Rockets to recover, as they led from start to finish in a 100-91 victory on Wednesday at Toyota Center.

Roy Hibbert led Indiana (45-27), which has won five of its last six games overall, with a season-high 28 points on 11-for-17 shooting and 13 rebounds, while Lance Stephenson netted 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Tyler Hansbrough finished with 16 points and eight boards for the Pacers, who reduced their magic number to clinch the Central Division to six and kept pace with the New York Knicks in the race for second place in the Eastern Conference.

Greg Smith paced Houston (39-32), which had a three-game winning streak snapped, with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. James Harden added 22 points and eight assists but connected on only six of 24 shot attempts to spearhead the Rockets' dismal 38.6 percent shooting effort.

THE STAT: Indiana's starting frontcourt of George, Hansbrough and Hibbert dominated the matchup with their counterparts, Omer Asik, Donatas Motiejunas and Chandler Parsons. The Pacers' trio outscored and outrebounded Asik, Motiejunas and Parsons, 60-19 and 27-9, respectively.

TURNING POINT: After the Rockets scored off a pair of steals to cut Indiana's lead to 68-64 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Pacers responded with a 12-3 run to regain control of the contest. Indiana limited Houston to one basket while scoring on five of seven possessions during this stretch.

HOT: The Rockets received unexpectedly heavy contributions from their backup big men Thomas Robinson and Greg Smith, who combined for 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting and 14 rebounds before halftime to help Houston move within striking distance. Patrick Beverley and Carlos Delfino also had an effective opening half as the Rockets' reserves outscored Indiana's bench 35-13.

NOT: Harden seems to always pour in points in an efficient manner due to his ability to draw so many fouls, but he has struggled with his shot over the last five games. Including Wednesday's dreadful 6-for-24 performance, Harden has nailed only 35.4 percent (28-for-79) of his field-goal attempts over his last five outings.

QUOTABLE III: "[Harden] has all the weapons to get his own shot and create for others. If you make it tough for him early on, he's going to try to make it to where he can get his own still and get his numbers, and that kind of will take you out of the game. Tonight, that's what I tried to do."

GOOD MOVE: The Pacers took control of the game from the outset, exploiting the Rockets' interior defense through Hansbrough and Hibbert. The pair of big men combined for 25 points on 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) shooting and 11 rebounds in the first quarter, setting the tone as Indiana scored on 15 of its first 18 possessions and built a double-digit advantage.

BAD MOVE: After Hibbert and Hansbrough worked over Houston rookie Motiejunas in the post during the opening period, it was somewhat surprising to not see McHale roll with Robinson or Smith at the beginning of the second half. Less than three-and-half minutes into the third period, Motiejunas was whistled for his fourth foul, offering McHale another opportunity to go to one of his big men off the bench. Instead, the Rockets coach stuck with the ineffective Motiejunas and watched his club's deficit grow.

NOTABLE: Vogel said before the game that he expects forward Danny Granger (patellar tendonosis in left knee) to return to Indiana's lineup in the next couple of games. Vogel added that he will ease Granger, who has missed the last 12 games and a total of 67 this season, back into the rotation in a limited reserve role. ... The Pacers also played without starting forward David West, who sat out for the sixth game in a row to rest a lower-back sprain. Indiana improved to 6-1 this season with West sidelined. ... George Hill (hip strain) and Stephenson (strained right hip flexor) returned to Indiana's lineup after missing Monday's win over the Atlanta Hawks. ... The Pacers are 3-1 on the road this season against the Southwest Division and 15-11 overall against the entire Western Conference. ... Indiana has allowed more than 100 points only once in its last 21 games. ... The Pacers are 6-1 when Hibbert leads them in scoring. ... Hibbert has posted a double-double in three consecutive games. ... Houston fell to 6-16 this season when it nets less than 100 points.
