Wizards-Warriors Preview

The Golden State Warriors will get plenty of games at Oracle Arena during the final push for their first playoff berth in six seasons.

The Warriors will try to begin that home-heavy stretch by adding to their recent success against the Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

Golden State (39-31) is currently sixth in the Western Conference, 4 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Utah. The Warriors get the benefit of a five-game homestand as they try to secure a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2007 and only the second time since 1994.

They'll play eight of their next nine games and nine of their final 12 contests in Oakland, where they've gone 22-10 this season.

"It's a great opportunity to put together a string of wins, but we're playing against some teams that are more than capable of coming in here and winning," coach Mark Jackson said. "It'll be a great chance to separate ourselves a little more."

Golden State will try to do that with its fifth straight win over Washington (25-43). The Warriors took advantage of Wizards star point guard John Wall's absence for a 101-97 road victory Dec. 8.

David Lee had 24 points and 17 rebounds while Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry also topped 20 points. Curry's four free throws in the final 15 seconds helped seal that win.

Washington, however, is 20-15 since Wall's return from a knee injury on Jan. 12 and has won five of its last six, including an impressive 103-100 road win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.

"They're playing much better. A healthy John Wall will do that for you," Jackson said. "It's a team that's playing very well right now. ... To be young and out of (playoff contention), you got to give them credit. They're finishing it the right way."

Wall had 24 points and a career-high 16 assists against the Lakers, and Trevor Ariza hit a personal-best seven 3-pointers en route to scoring 25 points.

The victory gave the Wizards their first back-to-back road wins this season. They trailed by as many as 18 points in the third quarter, but outscored Los Angeles 62-43 in the second half.

"We just knew what our team was, we're one of the top defensive teams and when we play defense and play the right way, we have a chance," Wall said. "We just have a lot of heart and character."

The Warriors are coming off a road trip that would have been perfect if not for a 104-93 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday. With 24 points, Curry was the only player to score more than 14 for Golden State, which won its other two games on the trek by a combined 51 points.

The Wizards have lost four of their last five in Oakland, although they haven't visited in nearly two years since a 114-104 loss March 27, 2011.

Lee had 33 points on 15-of-26 shooting for the Warriors in that game and is averaging 22.1 while hitting 56.8 percent from the field in his last 11 contests versus Washington.

Curry's 35 lift Warriors past Wizards, 101-92

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry put on an offensive clinic Saturday night. The Golden State Warriors are just hoping it didn't come at a hefty price.

Curry lit up the Wizards for 35 points before leaving with a right ankle sprain in the fourth-quarter of the Warriors' 101-92 victory over Washington.

X-rays were negative on Curry's ankle and his status for Monday's home showdown against the Los Angeles Lakers was unknown. Curry departed with 6:03 left in the game after turning his ankle after being fouled hard by Cartier Martin while driving toward the hoop.

Curry was on a tear up to that point, hitting 13 of 18 shots - including 6 of 10 from 3-point range - and dishing out a game-high eight assists.

"Night in and night out, he's the best player on the floor," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "It's special to see, because when you play with players like that, it elevates everybody else and makes them believe we can win, because we've got the baddest dude on the floor."

Curry and backcourt mate Klay Thompson (18 points) shot a combined 20 of 34 from the floor in the first game of a five-game homestand.

Washington came in riding high after a come-from-behind victory Friday night against the Lakers, but they didn't have the firepower to hang with Warriors.

Martin led Washington with a career-high 23 points.

The game's most intense moment came midway through the third quarter, when Wizards guard John Wall earned his second technical and was ejected after an altercation with Thompson.

"It's a lesson," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "When you get an early technical, you can't get into anything talking on the floor."

The Warriors hold a one-game lead over Houston for sixth place in the Western Conference.

They opened a 58-40 halftime lead, and it would have been more lopsided if Martin didn't hit buzzer-beating 3-pointers at the end of the first two quarters.

Golden State shot 56 percent (24 for 43) from the field in the first half.

The Wizards struggled mightily on offense in the first half, hitting just 15 of 45 shots (33 percent).

Jackson talked before the game about the importance of containing Wall, whom he called "a one-man fast break." His team executed the plan, holding the explosive point guard to eight points and two assists in the first half.

Wall wasn't around for much of the second half, earning his second technical foul and an automatic ejection with 6:41 left in the third.

Thompson sent him to the floor with a forearm as both players pursued a loose ball. That was shortly after Thompson fouled him hard on a layup attempt. Wall got up after the forearm and stood over Thompson, jawing at him nonstop.

The referees wound up charging both players with technicals, and Wall got an automatic ejection since he had also earned a first-quarter technical for chirping at the refs.

The Wizards were within reach at 69-57 when he left, but their chances of a comeback went with him.

"We had a chance to win this game and my actions let (the team) down," Wall said. ". The calls weren't going our way. (The Warriors) got a little too physical. We had some words back and forth, and I got my second technical."

Golden State extended its lead once again as Andrew Bogut fed David Lee for a dunk, and then threw down his own slam on a long alley-oop from Curry. That made it 74-57 with 4:58 left in the quarter, and the Warriors commanded an 82-64 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Wizards wouldn't go away, and Jackson wound up playing his starting unit longer than he probably would have liked. Even so, Warriors power forward David Lee said Golden State took care of business against a team it should have beat.

"The first game back from a road trip is always kind of a trap game," he said.

Now the Warriors will await word on Curry.

"It was just kind of a bang-bang play," Curry said of Martin's foul. "I know Cartier didn't have any malicious intent. Unfortunately, it ended that way."

NOTES: Wizards forward Trevor Ariza missed the game with the flu and stayed back at the team hotel. ... Washington did welcome back Emeka Okafor, who missed two games with the flu. ... Bradley Beal was out of the lineup for the eighth time in the past 11 games.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry scored 35 points on a 13-for-18 shooting effort as the Golden State Warriors claimed a 101-92 win over the Washington Wizards at Oracle Arena Saturday night.

But the win may have come at a cost for the Warriors (40-31). With 6:03 left in the game, Curry injured his right ankle as he went down to the ground after a foul by Cartier Martin on a fastbreak. Curry, who had ice on his ankle after the game, hopes to be ready for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. X-Rays came back negative for a fracture.

The injury marred an otherwise sensational offensive output by the Warriors, who also got 18 points from Klay Thompson, and 16 points and 12 rebounds from David Lee. It was Lee's league-leading, 47th double-double this season. The Wizards (25-44) got 23 points from Martin and 14 from John Wall, who was ejected in the third quarter after he was assessed a second technical foul.

The Warriors clinched their first 40-plus win season since the 2007-2008 team that went 48-34.

THE STAT: The Warriors, who have 11 games left, are closing in on a playoff spot, the first since 2007. They are in the No. 6 position and hold a five-game lead over No. 9 Utah. They are a game ahead of Houston and 3 ½ ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers.

TURNING POINT: Warriors coach Mark Jackson preached defense prior to this game, and the Warriors responded by shutting down the Wizards for most of the night. The Wizards shot a dismal 28.6 percent in the first quarter and 33.3 in the first half. The Warriors held Wall, who was guarded by Thompson, in check with eight points in the first half. No Wizards player reached double figures in scoring in the first half.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was in the house. Also, Warriors minority owner Vivek Ranadivé, who is part of the group attempting to purchase the Sacramento Kings and keep them in Sacramento, was on the scene.

QUOTABLE II: "[John Wall is] a heck of a basketball player. I though Klay did a heck of a job early, [and] our defense behind him did a heck of a job. He got it going a little bit in the third and then the night was over for him. He's a heck of a basketball player and I felt we did a good job of containing him."
