Trail Blazers-76ers Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers are well aware that they need to perform better on the road if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Blazers will try to start a five-game trip in winning fashion Monday night when they take on a Philadelphia 76ers team which has significantly dimmer postseason hopes.

With 17 games remaining, Portland (31-34) has plenty of ground to make up to move into the Western Conference's top eight but is among six teams within 5 1/2 games of each other for the final three playoff spots.

The Blazers have helped themselves lately with back-to-back home wins, but their next five games are on the road, where they've dropped 12 of 14. That doesn't bode well heading into a trip that features four teams currently in playoff position, not to mention two sets of games on back-to-back nights.

"This is a make-or-break road trip for us. I keep saying we're right there. If we play good on this trip then anything is possible," said LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 31 points and 12 rebounds in a 112-101 win over Detroit on Saturday.

Aldridge posted a third straight double-double, and J.J. Hickson recorded his 10th in 12 games since the All-Star break with 18 points and 15 boards.

The solid play of those big men has helped Portland win six of 10, including double-digit victories in the last two.

"Hopefully it's a little momentum for us going out on the road," coach Terry Stotts said.

The lone opponent Portland will face on this trip that is not in position for the postseason is Philadelphia (25-40), which is eight games back of eighth-place Milwaukee in the East.

The 76ers will try to boost their faint hopes by finishing with a winning record on a four-game homestand. After getting edged by red-hot Miami on Wednesday, they defeated Central Division-leading Indiana 98-91 on Saturday.

"I think our guys are settling into a really good style. I'm really happy with the way they've responded," coach Doug Collins said. "Our guys want to win, and they want to build. This is not a situation where our guys don't want to do anything other than that

"Just watching the tape, we're playing really connected basketball."

Spencer Hawes had 18 points, a season-high eight assists and personal bests of 16 rebounds and seven blocks in Philadelphia's third victory in 16 games. Jrue Holiday provided 27 points, 12 assists and six rebounds.

"I really like the nucleus we have here and what we've built here," Hawes said. "This year has been tough on everybody. I think if we can keep the right mindset going forward, and finish out strong, I think the future is bright."

Holiday had 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in Portland on Dec. 29, but the 76ers fell 89-85. Nicolas Batum had 22 points and eight assists to lead the Blazers, who have won three straight in this series - all in Portland.

Wesley Matthews missed that last meeting, but his 20.5 career scoring average versus Philadelphia is easily his highest against any opponent.

The Blazers are playing in Philadelphia for the first time since an 88-79 loss Nov. 30, 2010.

76ers rally late to top Portland 101-100

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Andrew Bynum's season is over. So are Philadelphia's playoff hopes.

The 76ers just refuse to fade away.

Spencer Hawes had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday scored 27 points to lead the Sixers to a 101-100 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

The Sixers got a needed victory after they finally announced Bynum, their 7-foot center, will have season-ending arthroscopic surgery on both knees Tuesday. Bynum has not played this season because of bone bruises in both of his knees.

Bynum's status has been uncertain since training camp, a constant string of optimism and speculation that ended with a whimper. The 25-year-old Bynum is an unrestricted free agent and he may never play for the Sixers.

With their sky-high preseason expectations dashed, the Sixers have tried not think about what might have been.

"We never played with him, so it's just speculation from there," Hawes said. "We know how bad he wants to get back out there. But sitting around doing that is not going to bring him back any quicker."

The Sixers wasted a 14-point lead and Portland took the lead late in the fourth. Holiday, though, rallied the Sixers and stretched the lead to 101-97 on a pair of free throws.

Damian Lillard hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 101-100. Holiday fell on the inbound pass and the ball sailed into the Sixers bench, giving Portland the ball with 7.1 seconds left. LaMarcus Aldridge missed the potential winner on a turnaround over Hawes.

Aldridge had 32 points and 14 rebounds, and Lillard scored 27 points.

After Portland rallied for the lead, Holiday, Hawes and Thaddeus Young hit three straight shots for a 97-92 advantage with 1:07 left. Aldridge's 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining cut it to 99-97. Holiday then hit two free throws for a five-point cushion.

Portland seemed to catch a break after Philadelphia's inbounds pass was a turnover. Aldridge had dominated Hawes for most of the game but his last-chance shot hit off the back of the rim.

"The play was made for it to get to me," Aldridge said. "I backed him in, got real deep in the paint, turned to the baseline and I thought it was in. I'll make that nine times out of 10. But it was just in and out."

Young scored 19 points and Dorell Wright had 16 for the Sixers.

Bynum was shut down in training camp as a precaution and the Sixers originally hoped he'd be ready by opening night Oct. 31. Bynum said since training camp he would play this season. But after he experienced swelling in his right knee after a 5-on-5 scrimmage late last month, he acknowledged a return might not be possible.

"It's sad," coach Doug Collins said. "It's been a tough year for our franchise, it's been a tough year for Andrew."

No other Trail Blazer hit double digits. Lillard shot 5 of 7 on 3-pointers.

The Trail Blazers wiped out a 14-point deficit when Eric Maynor and Lillard hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 82.

Holiday, Philadelphia's All-Star guard, hit his third 3 of the game to help the Sixers take the lead back.

Wesley Matthews tied it on a layup after Hawes lost control of the ball. Luke Babbit at last put the Trail Blazers ahead with a 3 for a 90-87 lead.

But the lead didn't last. With the Sixers' postseason hopes long over because Bynum's crushing injury, they haven't folded. The beat Brooklyn, Indiana and Portland, and took the Heat down to the wire in a 3-1 homestand.

"We have a lot of guys real comfortable in their roles right now, which can be the most important thing," Hawes said.

Now, the bad news for the Sixers. They play 12 of their final 16 games on the road. The Sixers have dropped 13 in a row on the road since beating the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 1 and are 6-23 overall.

Portland hoped to make up ground in the playoff race as it opened a five-game road trip. The Trail Blazers entered only 3 1/2 games behind Los Angeles for eighth place in the Western Conference. Up ahead: games at Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta and Oklahoma City.

All those teams are pointed toward the postseason, so they couldn't afford to slip up in Philadelphia. But they did.

"We just came up short," coach Terry Stotts said. "I thought our energy picked up defensively for the whole second half. And we played better, but they made tough shots down the stretch."

Aldridge, coming off a 31-point game against Detroit, did his part to keep Portland in the hunt in the first half. He went straight over Hawes on just about every possession and scored 18 points in the half. Portland made seven straight field goals in the first quarter to take a 58-50 lead into halftime.

Notes: The Sixers made 10 of 13 free throws and Portland was only 12 of 14. ... Holiday hit three 3s. ... The Sixers shot 50 percent from the field (43 of 86).

THE FACTS: Jrue Holiday scored 27 points and led five players in double figures as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 101-100 Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Thaddeus Young scored 19 points, Spencer Hawes had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Dorell Wright added 16 points and Damien Wilkins had 12. The Sixers improved to 26-40 and won their second game in a row.

LaMarcus Aldridge was terrific for the Trail Blazers with 32 points and 14 rebounds. Damian Lillard scored 27 points, their only other player in double figures. The Trail Blazers fell to 31-35 and had their two-game winning streak snapped.

QUOTABLE: "I think our energy is better. Our focus and attention to detail are much better."

THE STAT: The Sixers shot 50 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for the Trail Blazers. Philadelphia has outshot the opposition in each of the past four games.

TURNING POINT: The Sixers led 101-97 with 13.4 seconds remaining after a pair of free throws by Holiday. But Lillard responded with a 3-pointer and the Trail Blazers got the ball back after a costly Sixers turnover. On Portland's last possession, it went to Aldridge, who missed a short turnaround jumper.

HOT: Holiday was 11-for-21, Young was 9-for-15 and Hawes was 9-for-14. Lillard knocked down 10 of his 20 shots.

NOT: Wesley Matthews missed nine of his 12 shots for the Trail Blazers while Nicolas Batum was 3-for-9.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Holiday had 27 points, eight rebounds, six assists, one steal and one blocked shot while Hawes had 18 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Lillard was solid for the Trail Blazers, going for 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The crowd of 15,623 was lively from the start. It reached a fever pitch down the stretch as the game went right down to the final possession.

QUOTABLE III: "We've all seen it before. It was a matter of time before it was going to happen."

GOOD MOVE: On the last possession, the Sixers forced Aldridge to take a difficult shot. Hawes' defense pushed him maybe a step further from where he wanted to take the shot, and that's all you can ask from a defender.

BAD MOVE: The Trail Blazers could have gotten J.J. Hickson more involved in the offense. Hickson finished with four points in 15:51. They could gone to him a lot more, especially with his size against the undermanned Sixers.

ROOKIE WATCH: For the Trail Blazers, Lillard scored 27 points while center Meyers Leonard had six points and three rebounds. Forward Joel Freeland had six points and four rebounds and guard Will Barton was scoreless with two rebounds in 5:24. Sixers forward Arnett Moultrie had three points and three rebounds in 9:09.

NOTABLE: The Sixers announced that injured center Andrew Bynum will undergo arthroscopic surgery on both knees Tuesday, thus ending his season. Bynum was acquired in a blockbuster four-team, 12-player deal in the offseason, but has never played for the Sixers because of bilateral knee bone bruises. Bynum's surgery will be performed by Dr. David Altchek of the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York. "It's sad," Sixers coach Doug Collins said of Bynum. "It's been a tough year for our franchise and a tough year for Andrew." ... The Sixers are 24-7 when outshooting the opponent this season. ... The Sixers had 31 assists, marking the third time registering 30 or more over the past seven games. ... Aldridge scored 16 of his 32 points in the first quarter and it's the sixth time he has scored 30 or more this season. ... The Trail Blazers were 12-for-28 from beyond the arc. ... Over the past four games, Holiday is averaging 22.5 points on 50 percent shooting after averaging 12.0 points on 27 percent shooting the five games prior.
