The Brooklyn Nets seem to be gaining some confidence during a soft portion of their schedule.

The key has been their defense - and one of the league's lowest-scoring teams doesn't seem likely to stand in their way.

The Nets will try for their fourth straight victory on Monday night when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers, who have lost 12 of 13.

Brooklyn (37-26) bounced back from a stretch of four losses in five games with wins over lowly Charlotte and Washington before beating slumping Atlanta 93-80 on the road Saturday.

Big men Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche combined for 36 points on 17-of-27 shooting against the Hawks.

"When we're that focused and play with that much attentiveness as we did - not much energy - we can be a really good basketball team," said P.J. Carlesimo, who improved to 23-12 since replacing Avery Johnson. "We were a really good basketball team. It's one game, but that's really, really encouraging."

Now the Nets look to continue taking advantage of a lighter portion of the schedule that next features the lowly 76ers, Southwest-worst New Orleans and the Hawks again before embarking on a season-long eight-game road trip.

Brooklyn, which is just 2 1/2 games out of second place in the East, has been playing some of its best defense of the season during its streak. While the Nets rank near the top of the NBA in points allowed at 94.1 per game, they've limited opponents to 78.7 on 38.2 percent shooting - including 12 of 53 from 3-point range - in their last three.

That doesn't bode well for an offensively challenged Philadelphia team that has averaged 89.0 points while hitting 42.5 percent from the floor in its last 16 games.

After the 76ers (23-39) dropped their fifth straight with a 99-91 loss at struggling Orlando on Sunday, they'll try to avoid their third consecutive defeat in this series. The Nets took the first meeting 95-92 in Brooklyn on Dec. 23 before winning 109-89 at Philadelphia on Jan. 8.

"It definitely hurts to go out there and lose basketball games, but at the end of the day it happens," Thaddeus Young said after finishing with 26 points and 12 rebounds on Sunday. "Not every team is going to have a good season. We just have to try and take some positives out of it and just keep trying to figure it out."

Young had 18 points and 10 rebounds against the Nets in December and has scored 21.5 per game on 42-of-63 shooting in his last four overall.

Jrue Holiday has totaled 43 points on 59.3 percent shooting in the season series, but he's been mired in a slump lately. Holiday, the team's leading scorer at 18.6 per game, has averaged 12.0 points while making 26.7 percent from the field in his last five contests.

Brooklyn's Joe Johnson, who had 22 points in the first meeting, also hopes to bounce back after totaling 14 and missing 16 of 23 shots in his last two games overall.

Deron Williams led the Nets with 17 points on Saturday and had 22 against the 76ers in January. He's scored 25.0 per game in his last six heading into this meeting.

The Nets, who have won five of six on the road, look to extend a three-game winning streak in Philadelphia.

76ers top Nets 106-97 to end 5-game losing streak

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Damien Wilkins saw Brook Lopez spin into the paint and try another fadeaway jumper. Wilkins blocked the shot - more of a volleyball spike - and one-hopped the ball out of bounds.

With a rare feel-good play energizing the Philadelphia 76ers, Wilkins muttered some trash talk.

"I didn't tell him nothing. I didn't want to fire him up," Wilkins said, smiling. "I said it under my breath."

For one of the few times in the last two months, the Sixers were the fired-up team.

Spencer Hawes had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Jrue Holiday added 15 points and 11 assists and Philadelphia beat the Brooklyn Nets 106-97 on Monday night.

Hawes set a season high for points and also had seven assists while helping the Sixers snap a five-game losing streak. Thaddeus Young had 16 points and 10 rebounds in coach Doug Collins' 100th victory with the team.

Evan Turner also scored 16 points and Dorell Wright had 10.

Deron Williams had 27 points and 13 assists for the Nets, who had won three in a row. Williams also passed 10,000 points for his career.

"It's just another number," he said of his milestone. "I'm more worried about the loss than the record or anything like that."

Philadelphia grabbed control in the second quarter and never trailed in the second half. It was a needed win for the Sixers, who had high expectations before center Andrew Bynum was lost indefinitely with knee injuries.

With the Sixers up big, Williams tried to rally the Nets on his own, and for a while it worked. He converted a three-point play and then sank two more from the free-throw line to get Brooklyn within eight in the fourth.

But Williams also threw the ball away on a baseline drive, and later missed an open look with the Nets down eight. The Nets missed seven of their next eight shots until Joe Johnson hit a 3 with 1:25 left to make it 101-95.

This time, the Sixers held on for just their second win in the last 14 games

"That's been our deal all year, we get going but lose our focus when we let them back in it," Hawes said. "We were able to sustain and that was the best 48-minute game we played in a while."

Philadelphia is hoping to make the most of some time at home following a winless three-game road trip. The Sixers have dropped 13 in a row on the road since beating the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 1 and are 6-23 overall.

The Sixers continue their four-game homestand on Wednesday night against the streaking Miami Heat. After games against Indiana and Portland, they play 12 of their final 16 games on the road. That could be a stretch that not only keeps the Sixers in the draft lottery, but has them in the mix for a top-10 pick.

The Nets entered only 2 1/2 games behind New York for first place in the Atlantic Division. But they made only 11 of 16 free throws and shot 31 percent (6 of 19) from 3-point range while never mounting a serious charge at the Sixers. Johnson scored 20 points and Lopez had 19.

Wilkins, who scored 13, helped the Sixers build on their halftime lead with a pair of 3-pointers in the third that stretched the lead to 14. Wilkins hit his second 3, then blocked Lopez on the other end.

Hawes, the much-maligned 7-foot center, buried a jumper then turned a nice dish in the lane from Holiday into a one-handed dunk that had the Sixers thinking upset.

Hawes also settled down defensively and didn't let Lopez rattle him after hitting some early tough shots. Hawes has a habit of letting baskets scored against him affect his play offensively.

"Spencer's middle name is Frustration," Collins said.

The Sixers had a brief scare when Holiday, their All-Star point guard, appeared to hurt his right knee in the second half. Holiday, who hurt his right ankle last week against the Celtics, was gimpy on a few possessions after he banged his knee, but he said he was fine.

The Nets scored nine of the final 11 points of the third quarter to cut into the lead, but they couldn't overcome the Sixers in the final period.

"I'm way more concerned with our defense than our offense right now," coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "We weren't good tonight offensively, but 97 points on the road should be enough to win a game."

NOTES: New Eagles coach Chip Kelly visited Collins before the game. Collins said he told Kelly, "What an incredible city this is and how much they love their Eagles, the fan base here and stuff. ... I said, he couldn't find a better place to be a coach." ... The 76ers celebrated stat guru Harvey Pollack's 91st birthday. Pollack, who turned 91 on Saturday, got a phone call from NBA commissioner David Stern. Pollack said Stern told him it was "pleasure and an honor" to be his friend. He was a statistician and writer when Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points. Pollack wrote "100" on a piece of paper and gave it to Chamberlain to hold for the classic black-and-white snapshot.

THE FACTS: Spencer Hawes played one of his best all-around games in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform with a season-high 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in their 106-97 victory over the Brooklyn Nets Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Hawes led six Philadelphia players in double figures. Thaddeus Young and Evan Turner scored 16 points each while Jrue Holiday and Dorell Wright added 15 points apiece for the Sixers. Damien Wilkins scored 13 points for Philadelphia, which snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 24-39.

Deron Williams led the Nets with 27 points and 13 assists, Joe Johnson scored 20 points and Brook Lopez had 19. Reggie Evans swept 11 rebounds for the Nets (37-27), who had won three in a row entering this game.

QUOTABLE: "It's been tough. No one likes to lose and I know that I've been taking it home. It's nice to get a big win and see all the happy faces in this locker room. It's been a while."

THE STAT: The Sixers shot 18-for-27 at the free throw line while the Nets were 11-for-16. It's the first time the Sixers have had as many or more free throws than the opponent since December 8 at Boston.

TURNING POINT: After the Nets sliced a 14-point deficit to five midway through the fourth quarter, the Sixers responded with five straight, extending the lead back to 10. The Nets made one last surge, but it was too little too late.

HOT: Hawes was 10-for-15, Young was 6-for-9 and Wright was 6-for-10. The Sixers shot 40-for-76 -- 52.6 percent.

NOT: Gerald Wallace missed six of his eight shots and finished with just four points in 25:37.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Hawes had 24 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots. Williams was solid for the Nets with 27 points, 13 assists and six rebounds.

INSIDE THE ARENA: The crowd was rather lively for this matchup against the upstart Nets. New Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly met with Collins before the game. Collins was asked sarcastically before the game if he had any "words of warning" for Kelly. "I told him just the opposite, what an incredible city this is and how much they love their Eagles, the fan base here and stuff," Collins said. "It was just the opposite. I said, he couldn't find a better place to be a coach." Former Sixers center Darryl Dawkins was also in attendance and received a nice ovation.

QUOTABLE III: "I think they wanted the game a little bit more than us."

GOOD MOVE: The Sixers continued to run offense through Hawes. He started strong and ended even stronger.

BAD MOVE: The Nets probably could have played Wallace for longer stretches, especially with his defense prowess. When Wallace was on the bench, the Sixers seemed to get to the basket more often.

ROOKIE WATCH: Nets guard Tyshawn Taylor and forward Tornike Shengelia each received a DNP-CD. Forward Mirza Teletovic had four points and six rebounds in 17:01. For the Sixers, forward Arnett Moultrie had two points and two rebounds in 9:41.

NOTABLE: Sixers guard Nick Young was out with a sprained left ankle. ... The Sixers wished a happy 91st birthday to Sixers Director of Statistical Information Harvey Pollack. He is former PR director of the 76ers and the Philadelphia Warriors. Pollack has only missed three home or neutral-site games since 1946. ... The Sixers have scored 100 or more points in three of the past seven games. ... Philadelphia had a season-high tying 31 assists. ... Three Sixers registered a double-double in the same game for the first time this season. In addition to Hawes, Young had 16 points and 10 rebounds while Holiday added 15 points and 11 assists. ... Williams scored his 10,000th career point on a free throw with 9:23 remaining. He needed 23 points reach 10,000 and wound up with 27. Williams, on what the milestone meant to him: "Nothing really. Just another number." ... The Sixers are 8-1 when shooting 50 percent or better this season.
