After nearly knocking off the defending Western Conference champions without their All-Star forward, the New York Knicks could be even more short-handed for their next game.

Carmelo Anthony has missed the last two games with a sore right knee, Amare Stoudemire now is having the same problem and both are game-time decisions for the Knicks against the struggling Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

"He's game-to-game, day-to-day," coach Mike Woodson said of Anthony on Friday. "It is possible he could play on Saturday."

Both Anthony and Stoudemire, who has played every game in 2013 after missing the first two months of the season following knee surgery, sat out Saturday morning's shootaround with sore knees and received treatment.

Stoudemire had been picking up some of the scoring slack since Anthony has been out, averaging 20.0 points on 53.5 percent shooting in the last three games.

With Anthony sidelined since hurting his knee in the second quarter of a 102-97 win at Cleveland on Monday, New York managed to pull out an 87-77 victory at Detroit on Wednesday before losing 95-94 to Oklahoma City the following evening.

The Knicks (37-22) fell to 4-5 without Anthony, who ranks second in the league in scoring at 28.2 per game.

J.R. Smith, the team's second-leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, did his best to fill Anthony's shoes with a season-high 36 and hit 6 of 13 from 3-point range. Smith, however, went 2 for 9 from the field in the final quarter and missed a turnaround jumper just before the buzzer.

"We have to learn from games like this," Woodson said. "We were playing one of the best teams in our league and we didn't have one of our best players and we still had a shot to win it."

New York, which ranks second in the NBA in 3-point attempts, has been improved from that distance lately. The Knicks have hit 10 or more 3s in three straight games after doing so only twice in their previous 10.

They're likely to keep getting the green light from beyond the arc against a Utah team that is the worst defending 3-pointers at 41.7 percent.

While the Jazz limited Chicago to 4-of-17 shooting from long range on Friday, they were burned when Marco Belinelli sank a 3-pointer with 5.9 left to give the Bulls an 89-88 victory.

Utah (32-30) is trying to hold off the surging Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, but hasn't helped its cause by losing the first three games on this four-game road trip by a combined five points.

"If a couple things in all three games would have went differently we would have been 3-0 on this trip, but it didn't work out," said center Al Jefferson. "But we can't let it get us down. We've just got to continue to play hard."

Jefferson finished with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting in his return after missing three games with a sprained left ankle. He's averaged 24.8 while shooting 59.2 percent in his last four against the Knicks.

Enes Kanter stepped up with 19.3 points and 13.0 rebounds per game in the three while Jefferson was sidelined, but had just 10 and three, respectively, on Friday.

Gordon Hayward will try to bounce back from a five-point effort after averaging 18.4 over his previous seven contests.

The Knicks have won seven of the last eight meetings at home against the Jazz.

Knicks rout Jazz without Anthony and Stoudemire

NEW YORK (AP) With Carmelo Anthony still out and Amare Stoudemire headed for surgery, the New York Knicks need other players to step up.

Plenty of guys took the opportunity Saturday.

J.R. Smith scored 24 points and the Knicks shook off the absence of Anthony and the surprising and disappointing news about Stoudemire to rout the slumping Utah Jazz 113-84.

The Knicks learned earlier Saturday that Stoudemire will have right knee surgery that will sideline him approximately six weeks. But they still have plenty of scoring off the bench, with Steve Novak adding a season-high 20 points.

"Everybody has to pitch in," coach Mike Woodson said. "I can't sit here and say who should score and who shouldn't score. It's got to be a total team effort on everybody's effort."

Alec Burks scored 14 points and Gordon Hayward had 13 for the Jazz, who completed a 0-4 road trip that dropped them into a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"It has been a tough trip for us but we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and be ready to continue," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "It wasn't one of our best efforts. We are disappointed in the trip and the loss tonight, but it's not over for us.

"We are in the eighth spot right now and we are trying to hold on to it or move up. We have to fight, claw and dig ourselves out in order to move up. This group has shown that fight."

Utah played without starting forward Paul Millsap because of right knee inflammation.

The Knicks bounced back from a 95-94 loss to Oklahoma City on Thursday to win for the sixth time in eight games, seizing control with an 18-2 run in the second quarter and taking a 32-point lead in the second half.

They played their third straight game without Anthony, their leading scorer who they said has a stiff and sore right knee. Woodson said he remains day to day, so Anthony could return during the Knicks' five-game western trip that begins Monday at Golden State and includes a stop in Denver for what would be Anthony's first game there since the Nuggets traded him to New York in February, 2011.

Stoudemire will be gone much longer, just as he was playing well.

"It helps because we did play without Amare (earlier in the season) but we would love to have Amare back. We know that," guard Jason Kidd said. "The big thing for us is we get Melo back coming up and then we go on the West Coast trip and try to come back with a positive record."

There was no indication there was anything wrong with the former All-Star, who had matched his season high of 22 points in back-to-back games this week. He then scored 16 points Thursday against the Thunder, but sat out the morning shootaround with what Woodson said was pain in both his knees.

Stoudemire then had an MRI exam and the Knicks announced before the game he would have a debridement, a procedure to remove tissue, within the week and would miss approximately six weeks. That could have him back for the playoffs, though he missed two months after having the same surgery on his left knee in the preseason.

He came back from that on New Year's Day and has averaged 14.2 points in 29 games off the bench.

Smith, who scored a season-high 36 points Thursday but missed the potential winning shot, made four 3-pointers and Novak was 5 of 10 behind the arc.

Raymond Felton finished with 15 points for the Knicks.

Utah's last three losses had come by a combined five points, falling 89-88 on Friday in Chicago on Marco Belinelli's late 3-pointer. But the Jazz were out of this one early in their seventh loss in eight games.

"Obviously there's not anybody in here that's not frustrated at this point from players to coaching staff to the trainers. Everybody is frustrated," said Utah's Marvin Williams, who had X-rays on his left hand that revealed just a bruise. "It's a crucial time of the season. We're in a serious spot right now and each game we've got to come out and play with a sense of urgency."

The Knicks led by two before Novak and Felton made 3-pointers in a 10-0 burst that made it 41-29. Al Jefferson made a hook shot, but Novak answered with consecutive 3-pointers before Pablo Prigioni sank a pair of free throws to make it 51-33 with 1:46 remaining in the half. The lead peaked at 55-36 on Tyson Chandler's dunk and the Knicks were up by 17 at the break.

It ballooned to 75-45 on a pair of free throws by Iman Shumpert with 4:15 left in the third and would eventually reach 32.

Chris Copeland scored 12 points in just seven minutes and Kenyon Martin, now likely to have a bigger role in the rotation, scored 10 as the Knicks' reserves, who came in third in the NBA with 40.3 points per game, totaled 75.

"It's unfortunate Amare's going down, (I've) got to benefit from something like that," Martin said. "I'm going to take advantage of it and help the team win."

Notes: The Knicks end their trip on March 18 at Salt Lake City. ... The Clippers' 40.8 points per game from their reserves leads the NBA, just ahead of Dallas at 40.7. ... The Knicks lead the all-time series 43-42. Utah has lost eight of its past nine at Madison Square Garden.

THE FACTS: No Carmelo and Amar'e. No problem.

With their two superstars sidelined with knee ailments, the Knicks shared the ball well and used a group effort to rout the Utah Jazz 113-84 on the last game of their homestand.

J.R. Smith went for 24 points, Steve Novak scored a season-high 20 and Raymond Felton added 15 points and four assists as the Knicks won for the third time in four games before they head out on a five-game West Coast road swing.

Chris Copeland also added 12 points and Kenyon Martin scored a season-best 10.

Playing the second night of a back-to-back, the Jazz lost their fourth straight and seventh in eight games.

Alec Burks had 14 and Gordon Hayward 13 for Utah.

QUOTABLE: "Coach [Mike Woodson] came in before the game and said we can't lose any more games at home. No matter who's in uniform and who's not, we gotta come in here with a sense of pride."

THE STAT: Smith and Novak went a combined 9-for-18 from deep and the Knicks converted 13-of-32 from the arc.

TURNING POINT: Trailing 11-4 in the first period, the Knicks rattled off a 19-2 run to go ahead 23-13 and never looked back. They then outscored the Jazz 30-17 in the second quarter -- getting nine points from Novak and seven from Felton -- to seize a 55-38 halftime edge.

QUOTABLE II: "He's just getting back into his groove. Once he makes one or two [3-pointers] we all know it's gonna start hailing form there."

WHO'S HOT: Without Amar'e Stoudemire dominating the paint and Carmelo Anthony dominating the ball, Novak and Smith were freed up to score from the perimeter. Novak went 7-for-12 overall and 5-for-10 from deep and appeared more comfortable than he has in a while. Smith has now scored 60 points in back-to-back games without Anthony on the floor. Smith went for a season-best 36 in Thursday's 95-94 loss to Oklahoma City.

WHO'S NOT: The Utah backcourt of Randy Foye and Mo Williams combined for 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

QUOTABLE III: "We gotta find ways for Novak to score the ball because that opens it up a little bit. ... But it's gotta be a total team effort offensively."

NOTABLE: Stoudemire is scheduled to have a right knee debridement this coming week and is expected to miss approximately six weeks. Stoudemire, averaging 14.2 points and 5.0 rebounds, already had offseason knee surgery on his left knee and returned to the court Jan. 1. Stoudemire recently played four games in five nights and had taken on an increased workload, although his minutes limit was set at 30 per game. "I feel for Amar'e because he's put a lot of work in this summer to get back out on the court and what he went through at the beginning of camp and now he's gotta go back in again," Woodson said. "I feel for the young man because he's put so much time and hard work in. But we gotta go on." Added Woodson: "It's a major loss to what we're trying to do, but we're going to have to wait on him and continue our climb. We can't sit and sulk and feel upset about it. Guys have gotta step up play." Woodson said the Knicks will have to rely more on 40-year-old Kurt Thomas, 38-year-old Marcus Camby and the 35-year-old Martin to play more frontcourt minutes. "We gotta mix and match from a lineup standpoint and see what happens," he said. The NBA playoffs begin April 20, exactly six weeks from Saturday.

NOTABLE II: Thomas started his TCU career in 1990, the same year Iman Shumpert was born. They both started for the Knicks on Saturday.
