Bobcats-Wizards Preview

With their second victory over the Washington Wizards, the Charlotte Bobcats matched last season's win total just 12 games into 2012-13.

Fifty games later, the league-worst Bobcats still haven't doubled that amount.

Charlotte will try to defeat an opponent three times in a season for the first time since 2010-11 on Saturday night in the nation's capital.

After going 7-59 and finishing with the worst winning percentage (.106) in league history last season, the Bobcats (13-49) improved to 7-5 on Nov. 24 when they defeated the host Wizards (19-41) 108-106 in double-overtime.

Charlotte snapped a five-game skid in this series 11 days earlier with a 92-76 home win.

Any good feelings or promise brought by the Bobcats' quick start are now long gone, as they've lost 44 of 50 since their last meeting with Washington.

Charlotte is carrying a nine-game skid into this contest after getting routed 116-94 by Oklahoma City on Friday. The last eight defeats have been by double-digit margins, and the Bobcats have allowed an average of 109.2 points on 52.1 percent shooting while being outrebounded by 11.3 per game overall during this slide.

The Bobcats, whose last two wins in 16 road games both came at Orlando, will now face a Wizards team that's won 11 of 15 at home.

Washington, though, has dropped four of five following back-to-back road losses - both played without rookie guard Bradley Beal, who is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle suffered in Sunday's 90-87 home win over Philadelphia.

Beal posted his first career double-double on Nov. 24 with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wizards definitely could have used the athletic guard on the defensive end in a 95-78 loss to Brooklyn on Friday when they surrendered 11 3-pointers to Deron Williams, who hit nine of those in the opening 24 minutes - a league record for a half - when he equaled Washington's point total of 33.

The last player to equal or surpass an opponents' first-half total was Tracy McGrady on March 9, 2003, when he outscored Denver 37-32.

"It was just a hell of a shooting display," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said.

The Bobcats have seen a few of those lately, as their six opponents are averaging 11.2 3s.

Wizards point guard John Wall, 1 for 17 from beyond the arc this season, will get his first look at Charlotte this season after missing the November matchups with a knee injury.

Ramon Sessions led the Bobcats with 42 points in those games, but he's out 2-4 weeks with a with second degree MCL sprain in his left knee. Without Sessions, the team will have to keep an eye on leading scorer Kemba Walker's minutes. The second-year point guard played 31 minutes through three quarters on Friday before little-used Reggie Williams took over with the game out of reach.

"I know (Kemba is) dealing with heavier bodies (than in college at Connecticut) and a much longer season, but he's got great stamina," coach Mike Dunlap said. "We'll try and spell him as best as we can."

Walker is averaging 11.7 points on 29.1 percent shooting in the last five games since scoring 24 or more in four straight.

The Bobcats, who had two wins versus Toronto last season, had four victories against the Raptors and three against the Nets in 2010-11.

Wizards finally get win over lowly Bobcats 104-87

WASHINGTON (AP) The Washington Wizards are one of the few NBA teams who can actually call the Charlotte Bobcats a nemesis, and that's nothing to brag about.

So the Wizards had no problem finding the motivation to become the latest team to beat up on the worst club in the league. They never trailed Saturday night in a 104-87 victory, Charlotte's 10th straight loss.

"They beat us two times on the season," said Nene, who scored 19 points, "so we needed to step up."

Trevor Ariza scored a season-high 26 points as Washington shot 50 percent against a team that hasn't played very much competitive basketball lately. The Bobcats have been outscored by an average of 21.5 points during the 10-game skid.

But the Wizards had been 0-2 against the Bobcats, dropping both games back in November when Charlotte was actually toying with the idea of a respectable season. Washington has remained near the bottom of the league as well, sitting 13th in the 15-team Eastern Conference.

"Don't talk to me about slumps," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "I don't want to hear anything about that. We've all been there. I've been there, you've been there. It doesn't matter who we're playing, Charlotte, Brooklyn, it doesn't matter. I don't want these guys looking at `This is a team that is struggling.' We've got to take care of business our way, and I thought we did that tonight."

Kemba Walker scored 29 points for the Bobcats, who were done in by their 5-for-17 shooting from the field in the second quarter. Charlotte did manage to cut a 22-point, third-quarter deficit down to nine early in the fourth, but Ariza made a pair of 3-pointers to restore the Wizards' comfortable lead.

Nene worked the inside, Martell Webster hit from long range, and backup point guard A.J. Price supplied the assists as the Wizards surged in the second period. Nene's driving one-handed dunk put Washington ahead by 19 on the way to a 59-42 halftime lead.

Webster finished with 20 points, and Nene had 19. John Wall added 13 points and six assists for Washington, and Price contributed six assists. Ariza and Emeka Okafor each had 10 rebounds as Washington controlled the boards 45-32.

Josh McRoberts, acquired from the Orlando Magic in a trade last month, got his first start with the Bobcats. Charlotte coach Mike Dunlap said he went with McRoberts over Byron Mullins to get more rebounds, but McRoberts had only two in 22 minutes.

After another loss, it was all Dunlap could do to keep from sounding like a broken record.

"It's like herding cats sometimes," the coach said. "But there's an overview of what you're trying to do, and when you're not eligible for the playoffs, then it's about development, it's about a system, it's about, as the Wizards would say, having the attitude that you have something at stake. These guys are pros, and they understand that. You can't fake it."

Notes: Wall made a 3-pointer for only the second time all season. He's now 2 for 18 behind the arc. ... Wizards G Bradley Beal missed his third consecutive game with a sprained left ankle. ... The Bobcats played their second straight game without G Ramon Sessions, who is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks with a sprained left knee.

THE FACTS: Trevor Ariza scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half, Martell Webster had 20 and Nene had 19 as the Washington Wizards stopped a two-game losing streak -- overall and against Charlotte - with a 104-87 win over the Bobcats on Saturday night.

Kemba Walker scored 29 points and Gerald Henderson had 17 for the Bobcats, who have lost 10 straight and by an average of 21.5 points.

Looking to move on from a lopsided loss at Brooklyn on Friday, the Wizards (20-41) pulled away with a 22-5 run in the second quarter.

After letting Charlotte trim a 21-point lead down to nine in the fourth quarter, Ariza countered with two 3-pointers.

Charlotte won the previous two meetings with Washington, including a double-overtime triumph on Nov. 24. Since then, the Bobcats have lost 45 of 51 games.

QUOTABLE: "We turned the page. It was a hard loss last night. Tonight we came hard in the beginning of the game. We knew this team always play hard like us and they beat us two times on the season so we needed to step up."

THE STAT: The Wizards drained 10-of-18 3-pointers, five coming from Ariza and four from Webster, Washington's small forward combination. Webster made all of his in the first half on his first four attempts while Ariza sank three in the third quarter.

HOT: Nene finished the first half with 16 points - more than the Brazilian big man had scored in any game since the All-Star break. He had 21 at Milwaukee on Feb. 21.

NOT: Looking for rebounding help, Dunlap inserted Josh McRoberts into the starting lineup over Bryon Mullens. In 22 minutes, the 6-foot-10 McRoberts only grabbed two rebounds as the Wizards won the battle on the boards 45-32.

GOOD MOVE: With Bradley Beal sidelined with a sprained left ankle, Wizards coach Randy Wittman started Ariza during two road games. Back on home soil, Wittman moved Garrett Temple into the starting lineup while returning Ariza to his bench role.

QUOTABLE III: "It was good to just get a win period, losing the last two games," Wall said. "We wanted to come out and not let this game slip away. I think we did a great job of closing it out. We kind of let them back in but we had a decent enough lead."
