Wizards-Timberwolves Preview

Even if rookie Bradley Beal is healthy enough to go, John Wall should have the confidence to take charge for the Washington Wizards.

The injury-plagued Minnesota Timberwolves need someone to step up.

Washington will try to win a season-best second straight on the road Wednesday night when the Timberwolves look to avoid their seventh consecutive loss.

Wall struggled in the first six games following the All-Star break – averaging 11.2 points on 32.4 percent shooting with 4.7 turnovers – but he hit 7 of 11 shots and finished with 16 points, six assists and two turnovers in Sunday's 90-87 home win over Philadelphia. Wall scored the game's final six points after Beal was carried off the court with a sprained left ankle.

"I've proven myself in college," said Wall, a former No. 1 overall pick out of Kentucky. "I just have to keep proving myself."

Beal is listed as day-to-day, but the Timberwolves (20-37) will get their first look at Wall since Washington's 114-101 home win on Jan. 25 that was his first start of the season. The third-year point guard had come off the bench for the first seven games following an offseason knee injury.

Wall scored 14 points with five assists in that contest and Beal added 16 points with a career-high four blocks as Washington shot a season-high 57.8 percent.

The Wizards (19-39), though, have lost two straight and nine of 11 at Minnesota. They'll try to win back-to-back road games for the first time since a 3-0 stretch to end 2011-12.

The Timberwolves, meanwhile, haven't won since defeating the 76ers 94-87 on Feb. 20. A major reason why Minnesota has the fewest wins in the Western Conference is the number of injuries piling up on coach Rick Adelman's roster. Kevin Love (hand) has been out since Jan. 8, and now the team will be without starting center Nikola Pekovic (abdominal strain) and forward Andrei Kirilenko (strained left calf) for at least the next three contests.

Pekovic and Kirilenko missed their second and third games, respectively, on Monday when the Wolves were outscored 58-32 in the paint in a 97-81 loss to East-leading Miami.

"I don't think we have any rhythm to our game, probably because of the injuries," said Adelman, whose team has dropped 23 of 28 since Love's last appearance. "We're playing different people, trying to run different things. ... We're trying to find ways to be competitive each game."

Giving the ball to second-year forward Derrick Williams could help. He's averaging team highs with 21.4 points and 10.0 rebounds over the last five games.

Williams had 18 points and 11 boards in the previous meeting with Washington. However, without Pekovic and Kirilenko this time, the young forward could struggle to reach those numbers versus Emeka Okafor and Nene.

Okafor is averaging 13.8 points and 10.7 rebounds in the last nine games, while Nene had 15 points and nine rebounds on Sunday after a two-game absence with a sore right shoulder.

Minnesota's J.J. Barea will be available to back up guards Ricky Rubio and Luke Ridnour after the Flagrant-2 - and subsequent ejection - he received on Monday for his foul on Ray Allen, was downgraded to a Flagrant-1 by the league, meaning he will not face a suspension or fine.

The Timberwolves' last seven-game losing streak was an 11-game skid from March 30-April 17.

Rubio rallies Wolves to 87-82 win over Wizards

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The final seconds ticked off the clock and Ricky Rubio looked up to see his Minnesota Timberwolves ahead on the scoreboard. It's been a rare occurrence for him recently, and as the relief washed over him he flung the ball high in the air and into the stands.

A six-game losing streak was done, just their fourth victory in the last 26 games was in hand, and Rubio was the one who had made sure they didn't let another game slip away.

He had 15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and six steals to lead the Timberwolves to an 87-82 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

"Today was a relief to get that win," Rubio said.

Derrick Williams added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Timberwolves, and J.J. Barea scored 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter for the Wolves, who again were playing with just nine healthy players because of a slew of injuries.

John Wall had 19 points and seven assists, and Trevor Ariza added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Wizards, who were missing leading scorer Bradley Beal because of a sprained left ankle. Washington turned the ball over 24 times, leading to 30 points by Minnesota.

"We're not going to beat anybody with the carelessness we had with the ball," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "We just don't value the basketball at all. It doesn't hurt us to have a turnover. We just throw it all over."

Washington led by eight early in the fourth, but Rubio's defense keyed a 21-9 surge by the Timberwolves over the final 9:30. He had four steals in the final 8:25, the last coming with 30 seconds remaining and the Wolves clinging to a one-point lead. Shaking off a sore left hand, he dove to the floor to poke a loose ball away from Wall and push it ahead to Barea for a layup that gave Minnesota an 85-82 lead with 28.2 seconds left.

Luke Ridnour scored 15 points and Dante Cunningham added 11 points and five rebounds for the Timberwolves.

"They have just been slapped around so much," Wolves coach Rick Adelman said. "I think you get to a point where you keep saying the same things, you keep talking about the same things. But you need to get a win."

Nene had 12 points and eight boards, and Emeka Okafor added 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards, who squandered a 44-34 advantage on the boards against the short-handed Wolves.

The Wizards turned the ball over 17 times in the first three quarters, but they opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take control. Wall hit a free throw after a technical foul on Ridnour, Nene scored on an easy layup and Kevin Seraphin backed the smaller Cunningham down low for a post-up bucket to give Washington a 73-65 lead.

Adelman put Rubio back in the game, and he came up with two steals, fed Barea for a 3 and hit two free throws to get Minnesota back in it. Barea's second 3-pointer a minute later tied the game at 77.

"I just thought we weren't into the flow of the offense very early and we had just careless turnovers," said Wall, who had six turnovers and missed eight of his last 10 shots. "It was passes that were there, but we waited too late or made it a tougher pass than it was. That let them get themselves back in the game. We just feel like we gave this game away."

Wittman was an assistant in Minnesota under Flip Saunders and also was the head coach here from 2007-09. He went 36-105 with the rebuilding team during that time and was having just as much trouble since taking over for the fired Saunders in Washington until Wall hit the court this season. The hard-driving coach has tried to be patient with this young Wizards team, and he's had to be.

Injuries to Wall, Nene and Okafor gutted the Wizards at the start of the season. They slogged through a miserable 5-28 start, but they are 14-12 with Wall in the lineup.

One of the few bright spots for the Timberwolves over the last month has been Rubio's return to form from his torn ACL last March. He made his season debut in December, and has gradually gotten his game back. The restrictions on his minutes have been lifted and the behind-the-back passes and instinctive perimeter defense have returned.

"We feed off of him," Williams said. "We all look to him."

NOTES: Nene air-balled a free throw in the fourth quarter. ... Kevin Love said before the game he will meet with his hand specialist in New York next Wednesday in hopes of getting clearance for contact. ... Former Timberwolves F Martell Webster had 11 points and seven rebounds for Washington.

THE FACTS: With a near triple-double, Ricky Rubio led the undersized and undermanned Minnesota Timberwolves to an 87-82 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. The Wolves (21-37), dressing just nine players and missing their entire starting front court, used an effective three-guard set throughout the night that forced 24 turnovers and out-hustled the larger and slower Wizards (19-40).

Down 77-74 with just under six minutes remaining, the Wolves mounted a 13-5 rally fueled by guards J.J. Barea, and Luke Ridnour who scored eight of the 13 and helped hassle the Wizards into several turnovers and bad shots. Rubio also made a key steal in the final minute to finish a brilliant performance of 15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds, and six steals. John Wall led the way for the Wizards with 19 points and seven assists.

TURNING POINT: With 31 seconds left and the Wolves ahead 83-82, Rubio stole the ball from Wall and fed Barea for a layup that put the Wolves up three and forced the Wizards into an awkward three-point miss on the next possession.

QUOTABLE: "I lost the game really ... I took the three when we were down one and then we got a stop....[but] then J.J. did a great job of jumping out and Rubio hit the ball away and they went up three, so that was tough."

THE STAT: After allowing the usually abysmal Wolves to shoot 51.3 percent in the first half, the Wizards clamped down in the third quarter and forced the Wolves into just five field goals on 22.7-percent shooting. However, the Wizards didn't cut into a five-point halftime deficit because they managed only six field goals themselves, thus keeping the Wolves in the game.

HOT: With six steals tonight, Rubio is now averaging 4.3 steals over his last 10 games. Alvin Robertson holds the all-time NBA steals record with 3.67 steals per game in the 1985-1986 season.

NOT: Wall and Emeka Okafor committed 13 of the Wizards' 24 turnovers, including two critical ones in the final three minutes. Washington is 28th in the NBA at 15.5 turnovers per game.

GOOD MOVE: Wittman started Trevor Ariza in place of the injured Bradley Beal, and Ariza got the Wizards off to an opening quarter lead with 10 points, three assists, and two boards.

BAD MOVE: Wittman stayed with a larger lineup of Nene and Okafor in the final minutes, and they proved unable to effectively guard the smaller, quicker Timberwolves during the game's decisive run.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Rubio is filling up the fantasy stat sheets. Not only is he piling up steals for owners, he's averaging over 10 points per game and has nine straight games with at least five assists and five rebounds.

QUOTABLE III: "[Rubio] was unbelievable at the end of the game. He got his hands on those steals ... he made six steals. It seemed like he had more than that."

ROOKIE WATCH: Beal was carried off the court in Sundays game against the 76ers with what appeared to be a severe ankle injury. But Beal was seen before the game without crutches, and Wittman said he was "close" to playing. He's officially day-to-day.

NOTABLE: The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Timberwolves. ...Wittman was attempting to win his 38th game as head coach of the Wizards in his 108th game. He had 38 total wins as the Wolves coach in 143 games. ...All five Wizards starters scored in double figures tonight, helping making up for the loss of Beal, their leading scorer. ...The Wizards are now 14-12 since Wall returned to the lineup. They were 5-28 without him. ...The Wizards have held their last 10 opponents on the road to under 100 points. ...Kevin Love plans to have his injured hand examined in two weeks and is likely at least three weeks away from returning to game action.
