The New York Knicks overcame a performance from an opposing guard at the top of his game before facing one who is clearly not at the moment.

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall had a strong showing the last time he faced the Knicks, but he's enduring some major woes heading into Friday night's matchup at the Verizon Center.

New York (34-20) won 109-105 at home over Golden State on Wednesday despite Stephen Curry's NBA season-high 54 points. The Knicks admitted everything they tried didn't work.

"We ran everything at him," center Tyson Chandler said. "He just got hot. There was some shots that he couldn't have seen the rim."

Not much Wall has done recently has worked. He's committed at least a half-dozen turnovers in three of his last five games, finishing with six points, four assists and seven turnovers in Wednesday's 96-95 home loss to Detroit as Washington's three-game win streak was snapped.

"He is going through a rough stretch," coach Randy Wittman said. "You've got to fight through it. You can't succumb to it. You can't feel sorry for yourself about it."

Wall is averaging 10.2 points on 29.6 percent shooting in five contests since the All-Star break. He seemed to blame his teammates for Wednesday's miscues.

"I think it was great passes. I just think some of my teammates (didn't) catch them, and some of them got tipped away," Wall said, "so just got to deal with it."

Wall was more efficient Feb. 6, when he had 21 points and nine assists along with six turnovers as Washington (18-38) ended a 10-game slide to New York with a 106-96 home victory. He scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Wizards put up 36 - their highest total in a final period all season.

The Knicks took a three-point lead into that quarter - one they remember well.

"This is kind of a payback game for us," Carmelo Anthony said. "We felt like last time we went down there, we were supposed to have won that game."

Anthony had 31 points and nine rebounds in that contest. The Baltimore native no doubt enjoys playing close to home; his 28.3 points per game at Washington are his third-most in any NBA city.

The league's second-leading scorer insists his team won't look past the Wizards with Sunday's much-anticipated home game against Miami looming.

"We're not thinking about the Heat right now," Anthony said. "After we come back from Washington, maybe Saturday at practice you can ask me something about the Heat. We've got one game on our minds and that's the Wizards."

Wizards big man Nene is listed as questionable after missing the Pistons game with a sore right shoulder. Trevor Booker, who missed the first two games against the Knicks this season, started in Nene's place.

The Knicks also did not see an injured Bradley Beal in the most recent meeting. The rookie is back and averaging 19.8 points in his last five games.

Anthony scored 35 and had a season-high eight assists Wednesday against the Warriors. J.R. Smith chipped in with 26 points after averaging 12.7 over his previous three games.

Anthony's 30 points help Knicks beat Wizards 96-88

WASHINGTON (AP) Jason Kidd was saying all the right things, even kidding a bit, about being taken out of the New York Knicks' starting lineup during a stretch in which he now is 0 for 10 on 3-point attempts.

Might have made things easier Friday night that New York won its third game in a row, 96-88 over Washington, thanks in large part to Carmelo Anthony's 30 points, Raymond Felton's 23 and solid defense that held the Wizards without a field goal over the final 4 minutes Friday night.

Despite Kidd's stat line - 28 minutes, four points, five assists, five fouls, and 0-for-4 shooting on 3s - and the fact that he was on the sideline at the opening tipoff for only the second time in his 50 games this season, he was able to poke a little fun at himself.

"I didn't come in this league as a scorer and it doesn't look like I'm going to leave as a scorer," Kidd said with the hint of a smile. "The big thing is to keep taking those shots. They all feel good, look good. I'll have to talk to the `3' gods."

That's when a voice came from the left of Kidd, who turns 40 this month. It was Kurt Thomas, who already is 40 and didn't play a minute Friday, pointing out that Kidd ranks No. 3 on the NBA career list for 3-pointers made.

"Thank you," Kidd said in return.

Otherwise, Kidd emphasized that he and Coach Mike Woodson had discussed the lineup change in recent days "and I was in agreement with whatever he needs me to do."

In response to a reporter's question, Kidd agreed that he figured he'd be a backup in this, his 19th NBA season, but that Woodson wanted him to start when the schedule began. Kidd would be fine, he explained, "starting or coming off the bench or not playing."

Said Anthony: "We didn't expect Jason to come in, play 35-40 minutes every night."

Woodson insisted Kidd will come out of his recent shooting slump.

"One of these games, he's going to bust loose, and he's going to hit a big one, and we'll forget all about the ones he's missed," the coach said. "He'll figure it out; he's been around long enough."

Until then, the Knicks have other scorers to rely on, none more prominent than Anthony, of course. And even if New York was looking ahead to its game Sunday afternoon against LeBron James and the reigning champion Miami Heat, Anthony made sure his team still picked up a victory over Washington along the way.

"We will be prepared for Miami," said Anthony, whose 3-pointer with under 2 1/2 minutes remaining gave the Knicks a 92-87 cushion, and they held on.

Rookie Bradley Beal led the Wizards - who were missing Nene - with a career-high 29 points, falling just short of giving the team its first 30-point performance this season.

"My confidence is sky high," Beal said.

But after his 3-pointer with about 4 minutes left pulled Washington within 87-86, the Knicks held the Wizards without a field goal the rest of the way.

"We had, I think, three or four ... open-floor turnovers, where we didn't get a shot and in a tight game, got to get an attempt," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "Taking care of the ball, down (in) crunch time, is the main thing that I think we've got to concentrate (on) and do a better job."

John Wall had 16 points, six assists and five turnovers for Washington. Trevor Ariza scored 15, and Emeka Okafor finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Wizards were held to 42 percent shooting.

The Wizards were up 77-73 at the start of the fourth quarter, but missed seven field-goal attempts in a row over a 4-minute span and New York scored 10 straight points.

In one key sequence that began with Washington leading 77-75, Beal missed a 3-point try at one end, allowing Kidd to head the other way all alone. Wall gave chase and, just as Kidd tried to lay the ball in, the Wizards guard swiped his hand to block it. Goaltending was called, and Wall leaped in the air and punched a fist in anger, earning a technical, too. Anthony made the free throw to give New York a lead, and it never trailed again.

As for what Kidd's role will be against the Heat?

"It's up to Coach. We'll see what Coach wants to do," Kidd said. "We had some success with it tonight. We'll see what comes for Sunday."

Notes: The Knicks' current winning streak follows a season-worst, four-game losing streak. ... In place of Kidd, New York's James White got his seventh start of the season. He came in averaging 1.7 points and 0.3 assists in only 6.5 minutes. Against Washington, he had zero points, one rebound and one assist in 10 minutes. ... The Wizards were without Nene (sore right shoulder) for a second consecutive game. Backup PG A.J. Price sat out with a bruised right thigh. ... F Chris Singleton started in Nene's place and finished with zero points in 20 minutes. ... Beal's first 3-pointer, in the first quarter, gave him a franchise rookie-record 76 this season - one more than Steve Blake made in 2003-04.

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony scored 30 points and Raymond Felton had 23 as the New York Knicks finished off the Washington Wizards with runs starting and ending the fourth quarter for a 96-88 win on Friday night.

J.R. Smith finished with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for the Knicks (35-20), who opened the fourth quarter with 10 straight points and then ended the game on a 9-2 spurt. New York gained revenge after falling at Washington last month. Bradley Beal scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wizards (18-39), who have lost two straight. John Wall had 16 points, Trevor Ariza 15 and Emeka Okafor had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Washington led 77-73 entering the fourth quarter, but missed its first seven shots of the quarter. Anthony's layup gave the Knicks their largest lead of fourth quarter at 87-79. The Wizards went on a 7-0 run with Beal's fourth 3-pointer making it 87-86. However, the Wizards never made another field goal and Anthony's 3-pointer with 2:23 extended New York's lead to 92-87.

QUOTABLE: " We locked down in spurts. Still not where we really want to be. We had the game won a few times, but let them back in [a few] times. We finally got rebounds, loose balls starting falling our way and after that it was off to the races."

THE STAT: The Wizards missed 14 of their 17 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter with Beal and Wall combining to go 2-for-10. Washington, which had not lost two straight home games since Dec. 22-26, also coughed the ball up six times in the fourth.

QUOTABLE II: "We had, I think, three or four open floor turnovers, where we didn't get a shot. In a tight game, gotta get an attempt."

HOT: Free throws are never the sexiest stat, but the Knicks sank 18 of their 21 including 8-for-9 from Anthony. The Wizards were 19-for-29 attempts.

NOT: With Nene missing his second straight game with a right shoulder injury, Chris Singleton made his first start since Dec. 18. It was not a memorable one for the second-year forward, who missed all six of his field goal attempts and played a scoreless 21 minutes.

GOOD MOVE: After starting 48 of his 49 games this season, Jason Kidd came off the bench, replaced by James White. The 39-year-old Kidd, who shot 19.6 percent from the field in February, said he spoke with Knicks coach Mike Woodson before the game and agreed with the idea of the point guard's skills helping New York's second unit. Regardless of who started, Kidd played most of the fourth quarter and contributed directly to five points during a 10-0 run.

QUOTABLE III: "The shots have no effect of what I do on the floor. I didn't come into the league as a scorer and it doesn't look like I'll leave as a scorer."

NOTABLE: Amar'e Stoudamire scored 12 points. ...The Knicks won despite shooting 8-for-28 from beyond the 3-point arc. ...Wizards point guard A.J. Price did not play after suffering a bruised right quad.
