Warriors-Celtics Preview

Stephen Curry is coming off a performance in which he did everything except deliver the Golden State Warriors a victory.

That task may not be much easier in the next stop on a challenging trip.

Golden State's sharpshooting guard should get some help from David Lee on Friday night when the Warriors seek to snap the Boston Celtics' seven-game home winning streak.

Curry posted the highest single-game point total in the NBA this season Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, piling up 54 points - not to mention seven assists and six rebounds - while hitting 11 of 13 from 3-point range.

Sixteen of his points came in the final quarter, but Raymond Felton blocked his jumper with the game tied in the final two minutes as New York went on to win 109-105.

"He put on a clinic," coach Mark Jackson said. "Knocked down shots. Made plays. Carried us. Led us in rebounding. He did it all.

"I've seen a lot of great performances in this building and his goes up there. I've seen a lot. I've seen a lot, but that shooting performance was a thing of beauty."

Golden State (33-25) was especially in need of Curry's production without Lee, who was serving a one-game suspension for his role in an altercation in Tuesday's 108-97 defeat at Indiana. Curry was almost as good in that game, scoring 38 points - his season high for about 24 hours - and hitting 7 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Lee will look to help carry the load Friday. The former Knicks big man, whose 37 double-doubles lead the league, is averaging 27.7 points and 12.0 rebounds in his last three games at Boston.

The Warriors may need both stars at their best to beat the Celtics, who have taken four straight at home in this series and have beaten Miami and both Los Angeles teams during their current run in Boston.

Golden State handled the Celtics at home in a 101-83 victory Dec. 29, with Curry getting 22 points and nine assists and Lee scoring 20 on 10-of-15 shooting. Curry was 4 for 5 from 3-point range as the NBA's best 3-point shooting team hit 12 of 19.

This is a brief stop home for Boston (30-27) following a five-game trip, with two more road contests next week.

The Celtics haven't played since Monday night, when they capped their trek with a 110-107 overtime win at Utah. Paul Pierce posted 26 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, but was unhappy his team squandered a lead late in regulation.

"It would have felt better just to get a stop when we needed it," Pierce said. "That's what we need to get better at. ... That's what we need to start focusing on. When we get the lead and we need crucial stops, we have to figure out how to get them."

Boston's defensive numbers have slipped this season, but visitors have struggled to score during the Celtics' home win streak, averaging 92.1 points on 41.3 percent shooting and hitting just 26.7 percent from 3-point range.

The Warriors, meanwhile, can blame their defense for their recent problems on the road. They allowed 113.1 points per game while dropping seven of eight away from home in February.

They'll play seven straight at home following Saturday's game at Philadelphia.

Pierce scores 26, Celtics beat Warriors 94-86

BOSTON (AP) The Celtics cooled off Stephen Curry early, then shut down the rest of Golden State's lineup in the second half well enough to overcome their own mistakes.

Boston missed almost half its free throws in the first half and committed seven turnovers in the third quarter, but never let up defensively in a 94-86 win over the Warriors on Friday night.

Curry still led Golden State with 25 points, but that was less than half his total from two nights before when he scored 54 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

"I told our guys, `If Steph has 54 and we win, I'm taking that. We have to guard everyone else,"' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

The pressure defense cost the Celtics their starting backcourt for much of the second half when guards Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee got into foul trouble, but they had already accomplished their mission by getting Curry out of sync early.

Curry made all 10 of his free throws, but just two in the second half when the Celtics stopped giving him frequent trips to the line and gradually opened a 13-point lead that was too much for the road-weary Warriors to overcome.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 26 points, Jeff Green scored 14 of his 18 in the second half and Kevin Garnett pulled down 13 rebounds in the Celtics' eighth straight home win.

Although Bradley and Lee finished with eight points apiece and combined for nine fouls, their defensive contributions were recognized by their teammates.

"Our guards, they were ready for tonight's challenge. Avery set the tone very early," Garnett said.

Curry finished 6 of 22 from the field as Golden State shot 34 percent (32 for 94). The Warriors were just 16 for 53 (30 percent) in the second half with Curry going 3 for 13, including one 3-point attempt that missed everything and drew taunts of "air-ball!" from Boston fans.

"I was just trying to be aggressive. Obviously, my shot wasn't falling," Curry said. "I was kind of out of rhythm all night."

Curry didn't come close to the jaw-dropping shooting performance that led to his career high for scoring Wednesday night. He was 18 of 28 from the field against the Knicks, including 11 for 13 on 3-pointers, but struggled Friday from everywhere other than the foul line.

David Lee had 10 points and 19 rebounds in his return from a one-game suspension for the Warriors, who outrebounded the Celtics 54-44. Harrison Barnes scored 16 and Klay Thompson added 15 for Golden State, which fell to 1-3 on a five-game road trip that concludes Saturday in Philadelphia.

Golden State was able to keep it close most of the way by capitalizing on many Boston mistakes, including 9-of-16 free throw shooting in the first half.

Bradley picked up his third foul with 1:05 left in the second quarter, then two more in the first 3:59 of the third period. He fouled Curry for his fifth personal with 8:01 to go in the third and was quickly called back to the bench before Curry made both his free throws to put Golden State up 54-53.

Boston went to a zone defense that the Warriors were unable to penetrate.

"We missed shots. We turned the basketball over. We allowed them to get it going in transition a little bit," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "They played great defense. They battled and they won the ballgame."

Boston committed seven turnovers in the third period, but finished it off on a 9-2 run and led 69-62 entering the final quarter. The Celtics scored nine straight before Carl Landry's putback ended a scoring drought that lasted nearly 4 minutes. The Warriors went without a point from Landry's jumper that tied the score at 60 with 3:55 left in the third until Landry put back an offensive rebound with 3 seconds left.

Curry's shooting woes continued in the fourth and he finished 3 for 11 on 3s. His airball in the fourth bounced right to the Celtics and led to Jordan Crawford's fadeaway jumper that put Boston up 75-66.

NOTES: The Celtics improved to 3-3 since the All-Star break. ... The Warriors have lost eight of their last 10 in Boston. ... Landry scored 11 points and five Golden State players finished in double figures. ... Pierce and Green were the only Celtics players to score more than eight points. ... Curry's eight points from the foul line were just one fewer than the Celtics had altogether. ... Pierce scored 18 in the first half, but the Celtics' reserves combined for only eight points.

THE FACTS: Paul Pierce finished with a game-high 26 points, as the Boston Celtics took control in the second half and held off the Golden State Warriors with a 94-86 win. Jeff Green scored of his 10 of 18 points in the fourth quarter for Boston, as they overcame 17 turnovers and won their eighth straight game at the TD Garden. Stephen Curry had 25 points for the visitors, but struggled through a miserable shooting night (6-for-22) and his teammates could not pick up the slack offensively. The Warriors have now dropped three straight games overall, and nine of their last 12.

QUOTABLE: "I give them credit, they defended, but we missed shots. That's who they are. They're well prepared, extremely well prepared. Extremely well coached, and they battled. We missed shots, and we turned the basketball over. We allowed them to get it going in transition a little bit. And they won the ball."

THE STAT: The Warriors shot just 34 percent (32-of-94) from the field, their second lowest field goal percentage in a game this season.

TURNING POINT: After Golden State tied the game at 60 midway through the third quarter, the Celtics closed the frame with a 9-2 run to give the Celtics a seven-point edge heading into the fourth. The Warriors got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

GOOD MOVE: After Boston's best perimeter defender, Avery Bradley went to the bench with his fifth foul early in the third quarter, Doc Rivers had his team switch to a zone defense. The adjustment worked, as the normally sharpshooting Warriors hit a putrid 30.2 percent of their shots in the second half.

QUOTABLE II: ""I think it really bothered them. You know, they're a great one-on-one team who really thrives on taking you off the dribble, making an extra pass, shooting the three-ball. I think it altered their offense a little bit once we got into the zone. It was really effective, especially in the second half."

HOT: Pierce -- Boston's longtime captain came out assertive in the first half, scoring 18 of his 26 points before intermission on 7-of-10 shooting.

NOT: Jarrett Jack -- Golden State's shooters struggled for much of the night, but the normally reliable sixth man was a major liability Friday night. Jack missed eight of his nine shots, and scored just two points in 18 minutes of action.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Chris Wilcox -- The veteran big man has enjoyed the benefit of additional playing time since Boston traded away Jason Collins last week. Wilcox put together one of his best games of the season against the Warriors, posting eight points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.

ROOKIE WATCH: Harrison Barnes -- The standout small forward started off strong with 13 points in the first half, but trailed off late against a stingy Celtics' zone defense.

NOTABLE: D.J. White and Shavlik Randolph dressed for their first games as members of the Boston Celtics. Both players signed 10-day contracts with the team this week, but did not see action against the Warriors. Recent new additions Jordan Crawford and Terrence Williams also made their home debuts. Crawford scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes. David Lee returned to action for Golden State after serving a one-game suspension for his involvement in an altercation against Indiana Tuesday night. The Warriors have lost the first three games of their four-game road trip. The Warriors have lost eight of their last ten games in Boston.
