Raptors-Cavaliers Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't have Kyrie Irving in their latest game, but managed to pull off a road win against a team they've struggled to beat.

They certainly wouldn't have gotten out of Toronto with a victory last month without him.

Irving won't be around to hit another game-winner Wednesday night when the Cavaliers open a five-game homestand against the Raptors, who can finish February a perfect 4-0 on the road if they can win a fifth straight in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers (19-38) found out early Tuesday that Irving would miss that night's game in Chicago with a hyperextended knee he injured in practice last week. The All-Star struggled with it in games at Orlando and Miami over the weekend, so Cleveland decided to give him a rest against the Bulls.

The other half of the Cavaliers' young starting backcourt stepped up with Irving out. Rookie Dion Waiters followed up his 26-point performance against the Heat with 25 in Chicago as Cleveland snapped an 11-game series losing streak with a 101-98 win.

"I think Kyrie is one of those guys who is so good a lot of times you just rely on him," forward Luke Walton said. "Without him we knew we were all going to have to play a lot harder and a lot more focused.

"We've been playing very solid basketball. ... We are growing and we are definitely a much better team."

The team announced early Wednesday that Irving won't return for this game, surely not wanting to risk rushing the reigning rookie of the year back if he's not 100 percent.

Toronto (23-34) certainly must be happy about Irving getting another night off. He had 12 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter - including the decisive 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left - to lift Cleveland to a 99-98 win at Air Canada Centre on Jan. 26.

The Raptors, who lost 90-84 to Washington at home on Monday, likely also won't mind playing five of their next six on the road. They've yet to lose away from home since acquiring Rudy Gay, beating Indiana, New York and the Wizards.

Toronto won just five of its first 24 road games.

"We kinda have to get back to the basics," said Gay, who had seven points and shot 1 of 11 Monday. "... This, right here, is a big stretch for us. It could make or break us."

Particularly without Irving on the floor, Toronto should feel confident in its chances. It hasn't lost in Cleveland since LeBron James left, shooting at least 50.0 percent in all four meetings while averaging 108.3 points.

Jose Calderon, now in Detroit as part of the deal that brought Gay to Toronto, was its star in three of those, averaging 19.3 points and 11.3 assists. Current Raptors starter Kyle Lowry hasn't had nearly as much success against Cleveland, averaging 4.2 points and shooting a dreadful 21.1 percent in his last six games versus the Cavaliers.

Toronto shot under 37 percent in both losses on its recent three-game homestand, and poor shooting has virtually guaranteed Dwane Casey's club isn't going to walk away a winner. The Raptors are 1-12 when they've failed to hit at least 40 percent from the field.

"We can't afford to come out and not play in a desperate mode, a hungry mode, whatever you want to call it," Casey said. "If we don't play that way, we're not giving ourselves a chance."

The Cavaliers are 3-14 on the second end of back-to-backs.

Irving-less Cavaliers down Raptors 103-92

CLEVELAND (AP) Kyrie Irving isn't the only Cavaliers guard with killer instinct on the court.

When the game's on the line, Dion Waiters wants the spotlight - and the ball.

"I live for that," the rookie said.

Waiters scored 23 points, his last two coming on a crucial jumper with 1:43 left, Shaun Livingston added 15 and Cleveland overcame a horrendous start to win its second straight game without an injured Irving, 103-92 over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

The Cavs made only one of their first 15 shots, but recovered and finished February at 7-5, their first winning month since March 2010, when LeBron James was still around. Tristan Thompson scored 14, Wayne Ellington added 13 and Luke Walton had seven rebounds and seven assists for Cleveland, which closed with a 10-2 run.

Usually, Irving's the one the Cavs turn to in the closing minutes, when every dribble and every possession are important. But with their All-Star guard slowed or sidelined with a hyperextended right knee, the Cavs have turned to Waiters, who scored 25 in Tuesday's win at Chicago and has 71 points in his past three games.

"As a kid, you see a lot of guys like Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, who live for those moments," Waiters said. "You tell yourself you're going to be in that position one day. I'm just blessed to be in that position."

DeMar DeRozan scored 34 and Rudy Gay had 24 for the Raptors. Toronto climbed back from an 11-point deficit and pulled within three at 93-90 when Waiters calmly dropped a clutch 15-foot jumper - the kind of shot Irving has made a habit of taking and making in his two seasons as a pro.

Thompson, another of the young-and-improving Cavs, added eight rebounds and made all six free throws.

After trailing by 11, the Raptors got within 73-71 on DeRozan's jumper.

But Thompson scored six straight points inside and the Cavs reeled off seven consecutive to end the third. Cleveland made its first 20 free throws before Waiters split a pair with 1.7 seconds left, giving Cleveland an 80-71 lead entering the fourth. A 6-0 burst pushed Cleveland's lead to 86-71, but the Raptors, fighting to stay in the playoff race, weren't finished.

Gay's dunk made it 93-90, but Waiters showed no fear in stepping up and dropping his big jumper. On Cleveland's next possession, Livingston fired a no-look pass to Alonzo Gee for a dunk, and after DeRozan scored, the Cavs put the game away by making their free throws down the stretch.

The win was another sign of growth in the Cavs, who went 3-12 in November and 3-13 in December.

"We're growing every game," Waiters said.

The Raptors lost for the first time in four road games since acquiring Gay in a trade from Memphis. It's been a difficult transition for the forward, leaving a contending team to one with slim chances to make the postseason.

"Winning fixes everything," Gay said. "This is still new to me. That's why I get so frustrated when things happen out there. I'm still trying to figure things out. It's definitely not easy losing. I'm not here to lose. I don't think anybody else is here to lose."

The Cavs were beyond awful in the opening minutes, shooting (6.7 percent) from the field and allowing the Raptors to run out to an early 21-7 lead.

Gay dropped a 3-pointer during a 16-2 run for Toronto, and in the initial moments of a timeout, Cleveland coach Byron Scott looked at his players as if to say, "`Hey, guys, put the ball in the hoop."'

Waiters said the Cavs knew they had to get things turned around quickly.

"I was like, `We gotta pick it up. We gotta do something. We can't play great against the Bulls and do this,"' he said. "At halftime, we came back and talked, found out what we were doing wrong and came out and executed."

Cleveland's players finally began finding their range and used an 11-4 spurt to pull within 25-20 heading into the second quarter. Considering their atrocious start, it was incredible the Cavs weren't further down. They heated up in the second quarter, shooting 71.4 percent (15 of 21) and outscoring the Raptors 37-23.

"The second quarter killed us," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. "You give up a 37-point quarter and what we're playing for and what's at stake, that's too many points.

Cleveland's bench outscored Toronto's 39-8.

"We can't play our starters 48 minutes," Casey said. "I wish we could. The guys coming off the bench have to be ready to play."

NOTES: Toronto dropped six games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. ... Former Cavs majority owner Gordon Gund visited with current owner Dan Gilbert and former center Zydrunas Ilgauskas before the game outside Cleveland's locker room. Gund, who is blind, is in Cleveland for meetings for a foundation that raises money and awareness to fight diseases that cause blindness. "We're now delivering treatments and cures," Gund said. "That's the major reason I sold it (the team) when I did. I wanted to see it through. That's my passion now." ... Cavs G Daniel Gibson was active after missing three games to attend to a personal matter. He did not play on his 27th birthday.

THE FACTS: Rookie shooting guard Dion Waiters collected 23 points and six assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers posted a 103-92 victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night. Point guard Shaun Livingston, starting for an injured Kyrie Irving, added 15 points and six helpers for Cleveland (20-38). The Cavs rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Toronto at home for the first time since April 6, 2010. Shooting guard DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 34 points for the Raptors (23-35), while small forward Rudy Gay had 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists. The Cavaliers played without their NBA All-Star point guard Irving, who has a hyper-extended right knee.

QUOTABLE: "We had to pick it up after the first quarter, so I just tried to facilitate things for my teammates and get my own shots off. I live for this -- that's what I like doing -- and I'm just glad to be in this position. I was ballin'."

THE STAT: The Cavaliers finished February with a 7-5 record, marking just the second time they've had a winning month since LeBron James left the franchise as a free agent in July 2010. The other came in October 2012, when Cleveland went 1-0. "That team over there played as hard as anybody we've played against all year," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. "Dion Waiters is a real handful, and they do a real nice job playing to the strengths of the guys they bring off the bench." After starting this season 7-25, the Cavaliers are 13-13 since the calendar turned to 2013.

TURNING POINT: The Raptors' starting lineup jumped out to a 21-7 lead as Cleveland missed 19 of its first 21 shots. When Casey made his first substitution -- replacing power forward Amir Johnson with center Andrea Bargnani -- with 3:26 left in the first quarter, things immediately went downhill. The Cavaliers outscored Toronto 50-27 in the remainder of the first half, taking a 57-48 lead into the break. "We can't play our starters 48 minutes, but I wish we could," Casey said. "They gave us tremendous effort and focus, but they've got to rest sometime."

QUOTABLE II: "In the second quarter, we couldn't get stops and we couldn't score at the same time. We can't even find or make an excuse for that, we've just got to get the job done."

HOT: The Cavaliers have won both of their games since Irving was put on the shelf with a minor right knee injury. Livingston is averaging 15.0 points and 4.0 assists in two starts as his replacement. ... Cleveland's bench outscored Toronto's substitutes 39-8 and outrebounded them 21-2. Cavaliers shooting guard Wayne Ellington scored 13 points, while power forward Luke Walton had five points, seven rebounds and a team-high seven assists in just 21 minutes. ... Cleveland made its first 20 free throws and finished the evening 30-for-32 from the line (93.8 percent).

NOT: Raptors center Bargnani -- the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft -- missed all four of his field goal attempts, did not score and had one rebound in 16 minutes. ... Toronto point guard Sebastian Telfair played eight minutes in his debut with the team, but his only statistical marks were four fouls. ... The Raptors shot 2-for-20 on 3-pointers and made 15 turnovers that the Cavaliers turned into 20 points. ... Cleveland shooting guard Daniel Gibson celebrated his 27th birthday, but picked up his 12th "Did Not Play -- Coach's Decision" of the season.

QUOTABLE III: "We're closing games out now and understanding what it takes to win. I think we've got a taste of it and the guys understand how hard it is and how much work goes into it. It's a lot of fun to be part of."

GOOD MOVE: Former Cavaliers majority owner Gordon Gund, who still holds a small stake in the franchise, attended his first home game this season. He was warmly greeted by current majority owner Dan Gilbert and longtime Cleveland center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who now works in the Cavaliers' front office. "I'm very excited about how things are coming together," Gund said. "It reminds me very much of 1986 when we had four rookies in Brad Daugherty, Hot Rod Williams, Mark Price and Ron Harper, which was a darned good group."

BAD MOVE: Casey gave his post players specific defensive instructions during the Raptors' shootaround earlier in the day, but centers Jonas Valanciunas and Bargnani, in particular, did not follow them. "Some of our big guys did not rotate over when we needed them to tonight," a visibly frustrated Casey said. "We worked on that until our eyes turned blue this morning, but once the game started, it was like we never talked about it." Cavaliers guards Waiters, Livingston and Ellington exploited Toronto's slow footwork by drawing 18 free throw attempts.

NOTABLE: Irving underwent an MRI on his right knee Tuesday in Chicago, but it revealed no structural damage. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year was injured in practice late last week and is listed as day-to-day. "I don't know if we'll see him Friday [against the Los Angeles Clippers], but I do know that would give him four days rest," Scott said. ... Cavaliers small forward Omri Casspi (appendectomy) is resting at home after being operated on Saturday in Orlando. No timetable has been set for his return. ... Raptors small forward Linas Kleiza (right knee soreness) missed his 28th game in a row, while small forward Mickael Pietrus was a healthy inactive for the second straight contest.
