Pistons-Wizards Preview

Although the Washington Wizards have been at their best over the last three weeks, the Detroit Pistons always seem to bring out their worst.

Seeking its second four-game winning streak this month, Washington looks to avenge a loss in Detroit two weeks ago and avoid a 14th defeat in 16 meetings to the visiting Pistons in Wednesday night's season series finale.

The Wizards (18-37) have won seven of nine, including a season-high four straight Feb. 4-11. That run, however, came to an end with a 96-85 loss at Detroit on Feb. 13, Washington's fifth consecutive defeat in the series. The Wizards have been outscored by an average of 11.8 points during that skid.

Washington could be feeling good about snapping those woes in the nation's capital, where it's won 10 of 12 while averaging 101.1 points - 9.1 more than its season mark.

After posting home wins over Denver and Houston, the Wizards pulled out a 90-84 victory at Toronto on Monday. Rookie Bradley Beal scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures for Washington, which outrebounded the Raptors 49-39 and held them to 36.7 percent shooting.

The Wizards have limited opponents to 93.6 points per game and 41.9 percent from the field during their 7-2 stretch.

"These are the kinds of things that we've talked about since we've been heading in the direction we're going," said coach Randy Wittman, whose team has won 14 of 23. "You're not always going to have an offensive game where you're clicking or you're playing as well as you want, and you have to find a way to win those games. We, with our defense, have done that. ... Our defense gives us a chance."

While Washington continues to focus on slowing down its opponents, Beal has provided a huge boost offensively. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 draft is averaging 20.2 points on 49.4 percent shooting over the last six games, going 13 for 26 from 3-point range.

"I feel a lot more comfortable and I have a lot more confidence as well," Beal said. "It's a learning process for me and it's been like that the whole year. Now the game is slowing down for me, so I'm making easier reads. I'm starting to learn how teams are playing me and I'm just playing off of that."

The Wizards have won nine of their last 11 when Beal has at least 15 points. He scored 10 on 5-of-13 shooting at Detroit on Feb. 13.

"He's been playing great basketball over the last two weeks," swingman Martell Webster said. "The kid is balling. He has a great rhythm, let's hope he keeps riding it."

The Pistons (22-37) are coming off their third straight loss, 114-103 to Atlanta on Monday. Detroit held a 66-26 edge in the paint but allowed 14 3s on 33 attempts and 23 points off 17 turnovers.

"That's not the formula to win basketball games," coach Lawrence Frank said. "We obviously had a high number of turnovers. Especially when you're a little bit shorthanded, everyone has to put a little bit more into the game."

Continuing to play without rookie big man Andre Drummond (back), Detroit was also missing Brandon Knight for the third consecutive contest due to a hyperextended right knee and fellow guard Will Bynum due to a one-game suspension for striking Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough on Saturday.

Bynum is expected to return Wednesday, but Knight's status is uncertain. Bynum had 20 points and eight assists off the bench against Washington earlier this month.

Recently acquired Jose Calderon scored a season-high 24 that night while Greg Monroe added 16 and a season best-tying 18 boards.

Led by Knight's 32, Pistons beat Wizards 96-95

WASHINGTON (AP) Washington Wizards point guard John Wall hardly took the high road when asked whether his slow start affected him the rest of the way in a seven-turnover, four-assist performance Wednesday night.

"I think it was great passes. I just think some of my teammates (didn't) catch them, and some of them got tipped away," Wall said, "so just got to deal with it."

His coach, Randy Wittman, delivered a more direct, stinging criticism of various players - without naming names - after the Wizards lost to the Detroit Pistons 96-95. Brandon Knight returned from a right knee injury to score a career-high 32 points, Greg Monroe added 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Jose Calderon finished with 18 assists, as Detroit beat Washington for the sixth consecutive time and 14th time in 16 meetings.

"We got what we deserved. We didn't deserve to win that game. ... We were more caught up in ourselves as individuals than the team tonight. That's the bottom line," Wittman said.

"We got guys that hadn't been in the rotation complaining. The older guys trying to help, and they won't listen. And that just tells me, `I'm just worried about myself. I'm not worried about winning this game.' You have a tough game, it's my job to coach you," he continued. "It's bizarre to me. ... They didn't want to be coached. It was more about playing time, shots. Rather than, `What are we doing as a team and how am I playing while I'm out there?"'

Wednesday's result represented a reversal of fortunes for both clubs: Detroit had lost three straight games; Washington had won three straight.

But the Wizards were without starting center Nene (sore right shoulder) and got a poor game from John Wall. It's the third time in five games that the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft had at least a half-dozen turnovers.

"He is going through a rough stretch," Wittman said. "You've got to fight through it. You can't succumb to it. You can't feel sorry for yourself about it."

Trevor Ariza led the Wizards with 22 points, and his 3 with 34.1 seconds left got Washington within 96-93.

On Detroit's next possession, Ariza stole the ball and started heading the other way when he was fouled by Will Bynum. It was ruled a "clear path" foul, giving Washington two foul shots and the ball. Ariza went 2 for 2 at the line, making it 96-95 - and giving the Wizards a chance to win after trailing by as many as 16.

After some sloppy ball handling, the Wizards wound up getting a last-second heave from the corner by Ariza. It was an air ball.

"We gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game," Ariza said. "We let this one slip through our hands."

Knight missed those previous three Detroit losses, and was considered a game-time decision Wednesday. He was terrific, making 11 of 18 field-goal attempts, including 5 of 6 on 3-point tries.

"He's a big part of what we do," Monroe said, "so whenever he's on the floor, guys do feel better."

With Calderon orchestrating things, the Pistons opened the game by collecting assists on each of their first 16 field goals - the team's highest such total in at least a decade, according to STATS LLC.

By the end of the first quarter, Calderon already was up to eight assists - one more than the Wizards' entire roster - and Detroit led 28-24.

"Jose controlled the game," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said.

Without Wall for nearly the entire second quarter, Washington actually pulled out to a 55-51 edge at halftime. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft was unsteady when he was on the court, with five turnovers, two points and one assist in 11 minutes.

And then, on Washington's first possession of the second half, Wall raised his turnover total to six, getting stripped by Jason Maxiell.

"He's a player that's learning how to play the game still. He's still young," Ariza said about Wall. "He's still trying to improve and step into his leadership role."

NOTES: The No. 3 overall pick this year, Bradley Beal, scored 16 points for Washington but went 0 for 5 on 3-pointers; his next make from beyond the arc will give him the franchise record for most by a rookie. ... In the visiting locker room at his college's home arena, former Georgetown player Monroe celebrated the Hoyas' 79-78, double-OT win over Connecticut on Thursday night by repeatedly teasing Huskies-turned-Pistons Charlie Villanueva and Andre Drummond.

THE FACTS: Brandon Knight scored a career-high 32 points, and Greg Monroe had 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Detroit Pistons held off the Washington Wizards for a 96-95 win on Wednesday night.

Jose Calderon matched his season-high with 18 assists as the Pistons (23-37) outscored Washington 31-13 in the third quarter and then avoided a final minute collapse en route to snapping their three-game losing streak.

Trevor Ariza scored 22 points and Bradley Beal had 16 for the Wizards (18-38), who trailed 96-87 with 1:06 remaining. Ariza pulled Washington within one by scoring eight straight points on consecutive 3-pointers and two free throws following a clear path foul on Will Bynum with 12.3 seconds left.

Washington nearly lost possession on the final play, but the landed with Ariza, who airballed a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the left corner. Emeka Okafor added 15 points for the Wizards, who had won three straight.

Knight, who missed the previous three games with a hyper-extended right knee injury, made 5-for-6 3-pointers including one capping a 21-2 in the third, which put Detroit up 78-64.

THE STAT: John Wall played only 24 minutes, finishing with six points and four assists while matching his season-high with seven turnovers. Over his last nine games, Wall has committed at least six turnovers six times. In his last five games, the Wizards point guard has twice committed seven turnovers and had six miscues in another.

HOT: The Pistons shot 61.1 percent (13-for-21) in the first quarter with an assist on all 13 of their made field goals -- eight from Calderon -- for a 28-24 lead. Detroit also had assists on its first three baskets in the second quarter.

NOT: Collectively the Wizards shot 38.1 percent in the second half after knocking down 57.1 percent of their attempts before halftime. Wall and Beal missed nine of 13 shots while Ariza erred on four straight before sinking his two 3-pointers in the final stretch.

GOOD MOVE: With Wall scuffling, Wittman turned to backup point guard A.J. Price, who finished with nine points, eight assists and one turnover in 24 minutes. Washington entered the fourth quarter trailing 82-68, but with Price directing traffic scored 11 unanswered points to pull closer at 82-79 as Detroit missed its first eight shots of the quarter.

NOTABLE: The Pistons made 9 of 15 3-pointers. ...Nene (right shoulder) sat out after suffering an injury Monday against Toronto. Trevor Booker made his first start since Nov. 14 and scored four points. ... Kim English scored 10 points for the Pistons...After not playing in Washington's last two games, Kevin Seraphin scored 12 points.
