While there hasn't been much for the Charlotte Bobcats to celebrate this season, the improved play of Byron Mullens has them feeling optimistic heading into the second half.

The Orlando Magic will try to avoid another home loss to the Bobcats after the last one sent them on their worst skid in almost a decade.

In a meeting between the NBA's worst teams, the Bobcats and Magic hope to take advantage of a fresh start Tuesday night following the All-Star break.

After snapping an eight-game skid with a 94-91 win over Boston on Feb. 11, Charlotte fell 101-77 at Indiana on Wednesday to head into the break with 35 losses in 40 games after a 7-5 start.

The Bobcats (12-40) haven't been able to keep things close on the road, losing their last seven by an average of 16.2 points. Now they'll try to end that slide in the same venue as their last road win, 106-100 at Orlando on Jan. 18.

Charlotte did not have Mullens in that meeting because of a left ankle sprain that cost him 19 games, but the 7-footer has been one of the team's bright spots lately.

Mullens averaged 20.0 points - 7.2 above his season average - in four starts before the break, including a 25-point, 18-rebound performance against the Celtics.

"We need that from Byron," said guard Kemba Walker, who leads Charlotte with 17.2 points per game. "He can do it. We have to get him to do it every night. He's very capable of it. When he has big games like that it gives us a much better chance."

Walker averaged 11.0 points on 33.9 percent shooting in his last five before the break but may be able to bounce back against the Magic (15-37). He's scored 28.5 per game while shooting 52.8 percent in two meetings this season, including 32 points in a 107-98 home loss Dec. 15.

After averaging 87.4 points on 39.8 percent shooting over its last nine games, Charlotte will try to get something going against an Orlando team that has lost 24 of 27. The Magic have allowed 110.3 points over their last three contests.

Last month's loss to the Bobcats started a 12-game slide for the Magic, who had won 14 of 16 all-time at home in the series.

They ended their longest skid in nine years with a 110-104 win over Portland on Feb. 10 before falling 108-76 to Atlanta in their final game before the break Wednesday.

Orlando hasn't found much comfort on its home court, losing 12 of 14.

"At the end of the day, as simple as it can be you have to be ready to compete every night, especially with the remaining games that we have," coach Jacque Vaughn said.

Jameer Nelson, who shot 8 for 27 in his last two games, may be able to get on track against the Bobcats after averaging 19.0 points in the two meetings.

While Orlando has averaged 87.4 points in its last nine games, it has reached 100 in each of its last three in this series.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The last time the Charlotte Bobcats were in Orlando, an injury forced Byron Mullens to watch as his teammates scrapped their way to a narrow win.

This time, he made sure his presence was felt.

Mullens had 20 points and 12 rebounds, Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson scored 24 points apiece, and the Bobcats survived a second-half comeback to hold off the Orlando Magic 105-92 on Tuesday night.

For Mullens it was his third time in five games he had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, and proof that there is still life on a team far out of the postseason race. Mullens said a strong second half is contingent upon not mentally conceding that point.

"I told the guys earlier today that there are 30 games left and we could still make the playoffs," he said. "We can all put our heads down and just ride it out, or we can just fight for it. The team is growing and we are fighting, so that is showing a big part."

The Bobcats have won two of their last three and also snapped a string of seven consecutive road losses. Charlotte returns home to begin a three-game home stand on Wednesday against Detroit.

"We're getting traction," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said. "It proves that all the close games that we have played, some won, some lost, (and) we're improving still. And our young guys, you can see how much they're improving."

Nikola Vucevic had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Arron Afflalo 18 points to lead the Magic, who have lost 25 of their last 28, including 13 of 15 at home.

Like their division-mates, the Magic began the official second half of the season already well out of playoff contention.

Still, many of the bad habits that helped them tumble recently were prevalent again, as bad shooting exacerbated slowness on defense.

For the night, Orlando held a 20-8 edge on second-chance points, but was outscored 18-10 on fast breaks.

"Bad basketball. Bad defense. They (Charlotte) didn't seem to have a problem with energy, or a layoff or anything like that. Just bad," Magic guard J.J. Redick said. "Everybody was out there making mistakes. The NBA is about team defense. For the last 28 games we've been pretty awful on the defensive side of the ball."

The Magic and Bobcats entered the night with NBA's two worst winning percentages, and showed why at different times during the game.

In the first half it was Orlando that had trouble making baskets and just generally taking care of the ball while falling behind by 20.

Charlotte took its turn tripping over itself in the second half, watching an early lead get cut in half in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

That helped the Magic trim what had been a 22-point lead in the first half to single digits in the opening minutes of the fourth.

Orlando continued to chip away and eventually three free throws by Afflalo trimmed Charlotte's lead all the way to 90-88 with just 4 minutes to play.

Charlotte responded, turning more bad Magic possessions into easy baskets and pushed its advantage back to 100-92 on a dunk by Henderson with just over a minute left.

Charlotte did what it wanted offensively as it built a 63-43 halftime lead.

It didn't hurt that the Bobcats shot 59 percent (26 for 44) in the half, while the Magic struggled throughout, shooting 38 percent (18 for 47).

The Magic led by a point early in the first quarter, before falling into a hole as quick shots and shaky ball handling added up to a 14-2 edge by Charlotte in fast-break points.

Orlando also got little production from its bench early on, as Redick connected on just 1 of his first 6 shots.

"We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. "To be down 20 at halftime, we gave ourselves a chance. We fought back in the third quarter. Probably one of our better defensive quarters of the entire year. ... It was great to see."

The Magic will now try to turn the page Wednesday when they begin a two-game road trip at Dallas.

Walker, who has scored at least 24 points in each of the meetings with Orlando this season, said he liked the toughness his team showed.

"I just happen to play well against them," he said. "We came out strong. We played well throughout the whole game. Those guys made a run, but we stuck with it. I want to see more of that. We had opportunities to win a lot of close games, but we've lost them.

"I want to see us, when things get tough, get tougher."

NOTES: Vucevic's double-double was his 30th of the season. ... Magic F Andrew Nicholson's 12 rebounds were a career-high. ... The Bobcats' 37-point first quarter was their most productive opening period this season. ... THE FACTS: Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker scored 24 points each and the Charlotte Bobcats held off the Orlando Magic in the fourth quarter to win, 105-92.

Henderson scored 14 in the Bobcats' 37-point first quarter, their biggest first quarter of the season, and they led by 22 points before the end of the first half.

Walker came to the rescue in the fourth quarter with three straight Charlotte baskets after the lead had dwindled to two with four minutes left.

Byron Mullens had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats, who have beaten the Magic twice in a row for the first time since 2005.

Nik Vucevic and Arron Afflalo led six Magic players in double figures with 18 points each.

It was the Magic's 25th loss in 28 games.

THE STAT: A win against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night would give the Bobcats their first two-game winning streak in three months.

QUOTABLE: "We better have fresh legs; we haven't played since Wednesday. I think guys are just excited to play. It is the same season but it's kind of a fresh start for us."

TURNING POINT: After leading by 22 in the first half and by 16 late in the third quarter, the Bobcats were having difficulty finishing off the Magic. Charlotte missed 13 of its first 16 shots in the final period and was leading by only four when Walker deflected a pass, ran it down and went in for a layup with 2:47 left.

QUOTABLE II: "It started with the steal and they were closing on us fast. I thought that was a key play and had he not done that, we wouldn't have won this game tonight."

HOT: Henderson made 5-of-6 shots and all three of his free throws in the first quarter.

NOT: J.J. Redick was 0-for-7 from 3-point range and the Magic were 4-for-25.

GOOD MOVE: The Bobcats pushed the tempo in the first half, scoring 63 points against a team that appeared sluggish coming out of a five-day All-Star break.

QUOTABLE III: "I think how poor we were defensively in the first half has been why we've been losing the past month or two."

BAD MOVE: Henderson fouled Afflalo on a difficult 3-point shot with four minutes left. Afflalo made all three free throws, cutting Charlotte's lead to two, the closest the Magic ever got after the first six minutes of the game.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: The 7-foot Mullens has averaged 20 points and 9.6 rebounds in the Bobcats' last five games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Magic forward Andrew Nicholson had a career-high 12 rebounds. ... Magic forward Maurice Harkless scored 15 points, cracking double figures for the fourth time in 10 games after failing to score 10 in his first 37 games. ... Bobcats forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had six points and three rebounds, all early.

NOTABLE: It was the first of four games in five nights for both teams. ... In three games against the Magic this season, Walker averages 27 points (on 54 percent shooting) and 6.3 assists. ...The Magic have given up 104 points or more in four straight games, and 10 of their last 14.
