The Denver Nuggets' explosive offense was slowed just enough to bring their winning streak to an end their last time out.

If recent history is any indication, a matchup with the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night may be just what the visiting Nuggets need to return to their high-scoring - and winning - ways.

Denver has taken 15 of 17 from Toronto after a 113-110 victory in the most recent matchup Dec. 3, averaging 114.6 points in the wins. The Nuggets have scored at least 123 five times in that span.

Denver (33-19) averaged 114.6 points during a nine-game win streak before falling 118-114 in triple overtime at Boston on Sunday. The teams were tied at 92 after 48 minutes - Denver's lowest total in regulation since a 92-78 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Jan. 1.

Andre Miller missed a 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds remaining in the final overtime that would have put Denver ahead by one, instead snapping the club's longest winning streak in nearly eight years.

The Nuggets are 15-3 in their last 18, averaging 111.6 points in that span.

"Very few times when you lose do you think it's probably a good thing, and I thought we played as well as we can play with the circumstances," coach George Karl said. "We played with a lot of heart, a lot of guts, we took a lot of punches and fought back every time."

Danilo Gallinari shot 49.2 percent and 45.3 from 3-point range during the win streak, but he went 7 of 20 and had 18 points against the Celtics. Ty Lawson scored a game-high 29 for the Nuggets and has averaged 20.0 in his past 11 games.

"Hard to believe these guys don't have an All-Star," Boston forward Kevin Garnett said. "That baffles me ... Gallinari, Lawson ... they have deserving guys."

Rudy Gay has certainly played like an All-Star since joining the Raptors (19-32), who are 3-2 since acquiring him. He's averaging 23.4 points for his new team after scoring 17.2 per game with the Grizzlies this season.

Gay scored 20 in Toronto's 102-89 win over New Orleans on Sunday, while John Lucas had 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Raptors outscored the Hornets 33-23 in that period. Lucas, who matched his season high, was 4 of 6 from the field in the final 12 minutes.

Lucas has scored 17 or more in three of his last six after reaching double digits three times in his first 31 games.

"He did a great job on (the offensive) end, so I thought the second unit came in, gave us that spark that we needed," said coach Dwane Casey, whose team blew an 11-point second-quarter lead.

"We got to get that in the first part of the game and not give up a lead that the first unit did a great job of building."

Andrea Bargnani, who totaled 27 points in his first two games after missing 26 in a row with an injured right elbow, sat out Sunday because of flu-like symptoms. Jonas Valanciunas had 11 points and 10 rebounds after a broken finger sidelined him for the previous 18 contests.

Kyle Lowry led Toronto with 24 points in the first matchup with the Nuggets, while Corey Brewer scored 19 off the bench for Denver.

Raptors edge Nuggets 109-108

TORONTO (AP) Held in check after a great first quarter, Rudy Gay said he wasn't proud of his performance.

None of his Toronto Raptors teammates saw anything to complain about.

Gay hit a pull-up jump shot with less than five seconds remaining and the Raptors beat the short-handed Denver Nuggets 109-108 on Tuesday.

It was the second game-winner in three games for Gay, who beat Indiana with an overtime jumper last Friday.

"He's a big time player," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "He's a closer."

Only four of Gay's 17 points came after the first, and he spent long stretches of the second half stuck on the bench after landing in foul trouble.

"It just feels good to get a win," said Gay, acquired from Memphis on Jan. 30 in a three-team trade. "Obviously it's a not a game I'm proud of, but I'm proud to get this win."

Denver coach George Karl said before the game that Gay has given the Raptors "a different personality."

"They seem to have more energy," Karl said.

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson said there's an obvious change in Toronto's confidence since adding Gay to the lineup.

"Rudy brings that because Rudy is a confident person," Lawson said. "He makes big shots."

DeMar DeRozan had 22 points and John Lucas scored 12 of his 14 points in the final quarter as the Raptors won their third straight.

Kyle Lowry had 11 points and 10 assists and Alan Anderson had 10 for Toronto, which made seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Lawson led Denver with 29 points, Kenneth Faried had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Anthony Randolph scored 16.

"It seems like the ball wasn't bouncing our way," Karl said. "A lot of things were going against us."

The Nuggets had to juggle their starting lineup due to the absences of leading scorer Danilo Gallinari (sinus infection) and third-leading scorer Andre Iguodala (strained neck). Corey Brewer started in place of Gallinari, while rookie Evan Fournier took over for Iguodala.

"That's tough," Lawson said. "We didn't know till today so we couldn't really plan for it."

Denver was also depleted by the loss of forward Wilson Chandler, sidelined by a sore groin. Things got worse for the Nuggets when center JaVale McGee left at halftime with a sore left leg.

Andre Miller scored 12 points for the Nuggets, who came in having won nine of their past 10 overall and 15 of their past 17 meetings with Toronto.

Denver lost its second straight after having a nine-game winning streak snapped with a triple OT loss at Boston on Sunday.

"This one is even harder for me than Boston," Karl said.

Lucas' third 3-pointer of the fourth quarter put Toronto up 91-83 with 9:10 remaining, but Denver scored six straight points to make it 91-89.

Anderson hit Toronto's sixth 3-pointer of the fourth, putting the Raptors up 100-94 with 5:13 to play, but Lawson scored six of the next eight points, all on layups, before a reverse layup by Brewer tied it at 102-all with 3:02 left.

After Denver took a 108-107 lead on a pair of free throws by Randolph with 42 seconds left, the Raptors recovered the ball following a missed shot, then called timeout to draw up a play for Gay, who hit the go-ahead basket over Brewer from just outside the paint.

A driving Lawson got off a final chance for the Nuggets, but his shot rimmed out at the buzzer.

"I was supposed to get the handoff and then it was basically a one-on-one," Lawson said. "I fumbled it a little bit. Kyle Lowry got his hand on it. I had to rush the shot with two seconds left. I think I got the best shot I could get."

The Raptors led 22-9 after Gay's 3-pointer with 4:07 left in the first but the Nuggets fought back to make it 28-21 after one quarter. Gay scored 13 points in the first and DeRozan had eight for Toronto.

DeRozan opened the second quarter with a soaring dunk over Denver's Timofey Mozgov, and Toronto rookie Terrence Ross, who'll compete in the dunk contest at All-Star weekend, later added a breakaway dunk to put the Raptors up 43-31 with 6:28 left in the half. But the Nuggets got 14 points from Lawson in the second, slicing the deficit to 54-52 at the half.

Gay called DeRozan's eye-popping slam "one of the craziest dunks I've ever seen."

"The sky's the limit for him, he's an incredible talent," Gay said.

Denver took its first lead since the game's opening basket on a dunk by Faried with 7:02 left in the third, but Toronto closed the quarter with back-to-back baskets by Lucas and DeRozan to take an 82-78 lead into the fourth.

NOTES: This was Toronto's first victory over the Nuggets since a 105-96 home win March 28, 2012. ... THE FACTS: With 4.8 seconds remaining, down by one point, forward Rudy Gay knocked down his second game-winning shot in the last three games, giving the Toronto Raptors (20-32) a 109-108 victory over the undermanned Denver Nuggets (33-20) at the Air Canada Centre Tuesday.

The Raptors have won four of six games since Gay was acquired in a three-team trade from Memphis. The newest member of the Raptors battled foul trouble throughout the second half, finishing with 17 points in 25 minutes. DeMar DeRozan had a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds while Kyle Lowry registered his second straight double-double contributing 11 points and 10 dimes.

Ty Lawson poured in a game-best 29 points to go along with nine assists for the Nuggets, who were playing without the injured Andre Iguodala (neck strain), Danilo Gallinari (sinus infection) and Wilson Chandler (groin). Anthony Randolph scored a season-high 16 off the bench, Kenneth Faried had a double-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and Andre Miller added 12 points.

QUOTABLE: "He is a big time player. He is a closer. His roll card has 'closer' all across the front of it. He has done it his whole career. He has done it at high levels like in the playoffs. I have seen him do it so many times, that is what he does."

THE STAT: For the second straight game the Raptors' second unit came through for them in the clutch. Reserve guards John Lucas III and Alan Anderson combined to score 22 of the team's 27 fourth-quarter points. Lucas scored 12 of his 14 in the final period after a 13-point fourth-quarter performance in Sunday's win over the Hornets. Anderson scored all 10 of his points in succession during the frame.

TURNING POINT: After a back-and-forth second half the Nuggets took a one-point lead on a pair of free throws from Randolph. Despite battling foul trouble, which limited him to just two points in eight second-half minutes, Gay hit the go-ahead shot -- a 17-foot jump shot -- to put his new team on top. Lawson missed a runner at the buzzer to seal Toronto's victory. Gay was 0-for-3 in the fourth quarter before hitting his second game-winner as a member of the Raptors -- the first coming at the end of an overtime victory in Indiana on Friday.

HOT: DeRozan kept his team afloat as the Nuggets made their run in the third quarter, scoring eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in the frame. The Raptors' guard bounced back after a quiet seven-point outing on Sunday. ... Lucas went 4-for-6 from beyond the arch in the final quarter and is now shooting 9-of-11 from three-point range over the last two games. ... Lawson recorded 29 points for the second consecutive contest, going 12-of-20 from the field. He came into the game averaging 20.0 points over his last 11 after scoring 13.0 in the previous 11.

NOT: Coming off a triple overtime loss in Boston, the Nuggets have now dropped two in a row after winning nine straight, their longest streak in almost eight years. ... Andrea Bargnani returned for the Raptors following a one-game absence suffering from the flu. The forward shot just 2-of-7 in 17 minutes scoring four points and grabbing just one rebound.

NOTABLE: Iguodala sustained his neck injury in the third quarter of Sunday's loss, playing just 20 minutes in that contest. Iguodala, Gallinari and Chandler were all late scratches from the Nuggets line-up. ... Brewer was in the starting line-up for the first time this season while rookie Evan Fournier made his first career start for the Nuggets. Without three of his regular rotation players, Karl used all 10 available Nuggets in the first seven minutes of the game, before the Raptors went to their bench... Center JaVale McGee played just five minutes prior to leaving the game with left tibia soreness. He is being considered day-to-day. ... Bargnani, the first Toronto reserve to enter, was a game-time decision after missing Sunday's game with flu-like symptoms. The illness also kept him out of practice on Monday and shootaround Tuesday morning. ... The Raptors attempted 12 free throws, making 11, before the Nuggets got to the line for the first time midway through the second quarter. ... The Nuggets closed out both the first and second quarter with 10-4 runs that cut Toronto's lead to two at the half. ... The Raptors allowed an opponent season-high 70 points in the paint, a mark Denver has reached four times this year. ... Amir Johnson has now recorded a block in 12 straight games, one short of his career high set from Jan. 24-Feb. 23, 2011.
