Warriors-Rockets Preview

With Stephen Curry and Andrew Bogut back, the now-healthy Golden State Warriors are on the verge of matching their longest winning streak of the season.

Keeping things going, though, could prove difficult in Houston, where they haven't won in more than five years.

The surging Warriors try to snap an eight-game road losing streak to the Rockets, who aim for a fifth win in six games Tuesday night as these teams meet for the first time.

Golden State (30-17) continues to look more and more like a legitimate contender, especially with its core back at full strength.

After sitting out two games due to an ankle injury, Curry had 29 points to lead all five starters in double figures as the Warriors beat Phoenix 113-93 on Saturday for their fourth consecutive win. Bogut scored 11 to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks in his third game since missing 38 due a troublesome left ankle. The Australian big man has blocked 10 shots since returning.

"We are a different basketball team with those guys on the floor," said Mark Jackson, whose team won five in a row Dec. 5-12. "Offensively, defensively - it puts everybody in their proper rotational spot. When you start the type of lineup that we start, we have every right to believe that we can win any ballgame we play in."

Averaging 108.8 points on 50.1 percent shooting during its run, much of Golden State's success comes from a willingness to share the basketball. The Warriors recorded a season-high 34 assists Saturday and set a franchise record with four players (Curry, David Lee, Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack) dishing out at least seven - the first team in the NBA to do since Nov. 24, 2006, when Denver did it against Golden State.

"I just think it is our ability to be united. We are a team that's together," Jackson said. "We understand the assignment, we understand the call - when you are together it's tough to let go of the rope. I know it's a sermon we have been preaching all year long, but it's the truth. You don't stumble into wins. This is a team that is together. We understand that we are a very good team and we understand what we have to do to continue to win."

Wins haven't been easy to come by at Toyota Center, where Houston (26-23) has outscored Golden State by an average of 15.0 points in winning all the meetings since a 112-95 loss on Dec. 31, 2007. The Warriors have also lost 14 of 16 to the Rockets overall.

Houston appears to have turned a corner since dropping seven straight, winning five of its last seven, including four of five while averaging 112.6 points.

Everything seemed to be working Saturday in a 109-95 victory over Charlotte. James Harden had 21 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and 11 assists for his first career triple-double while Chandler Parsons and Patrick Patterson scored 24 apiece for the Rockets, who outscored the Bobcats 58-32 in the paint and held a 50-35 rebounding edge.

"I think our team is starting to see what works and what doesn't work and I think they're starting to figure it out," Kevin McHale told the Rockets' official website.

Omer Asik also came up big with 19 points and 15 boards for his 20th double-double. The Rockets, though, could have their hands full down low Tuesday as the Warriors are fourth in the league in rebounding at 44.7 per game and are 23-3 when holding an edge on the glass.

Lee, who leads the league with 31 double-doubles, is the first player to post 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in four consecutive games since Kevin Garnett in 2003.

Rockets tie NBA record for 3s against Warriors

HOUSTON (AP) The Houston fans knew the Rockets were on the verge of history against Golden State on Tuesday night, needing one more 3-pointer to set an NBA record.

Warriors coach Mark Jackson wasn't going to let that happen.

The Rockets settled for tying an NBA record and set a franchise mark with 23 3-pointers in a 140-109 win over the Warriors. Houston matched the single-game record for 3s set by Orlando in a win over Sacramento on Jan. 13, 2009.

The Toyota Center crowd realized the outright record was within reach in the final three minutes, chanting "One more 3!" But the Warriors took away Houston's chances of getting it by fouling at the end.

"We're not going to lay down," Jackson said. "If you're going to try to get the record, we're going to stop it."

The Warriors should've employed that plan sooner.

Jeremy Lin sank five 3-pointers, a career high, and Chandler Parsons and James Harden hit four apiece as the Rockets reached a season-high point total. They also tied an NBA record with 14 3-pointers in the first half and dished out a season-high 35 assists on 46 field goals overall.

"Thankfully, we were just able to get a bunch of open looks and knock them down," Lin said. "That's just the way it is sometimes."

Lin scored 28 points, Harden added 18 and Parsons had 16 for Houston. The Rockets put on the shooting display without their best 3-point shooter - Carlos Delfino, who sat out with a right elbow injury.

"We just got hot tonight," Harden said.

Jarrett Jack scored 20 points and David Lee had 18 for the Warriors. Stephen Curry, averaging 21 points per game, scored only seven points on 3-for-12 shooting.

Houston set a Toyota Center scoring record and reached 140 points for the first time since April 1995.

"Throughout the whole game, you figured they'd cool off," Curry said. "But we have to force them to take tougher shots. You just can't give them open looks."

The Rockets were 18 of 27 from 3-point range through three quarters. They finally hit a dry spell early in the fourth, missing their first three 3-point attempts. It didn't last long - Marcus Morris connected on a 3 from the wing and Parsons flashed him a smile as the two trotted back down the court.

With the outcome decided, Rockets coach Kevin McHale pulled his starters with 5:49 left, leaving the pursuit of the NBA record to the reserves. By then, everyone on Houston bench knew the record was within reach.

"Obviously, the amount of 3s we hit is pretty ridiculous," Parsons said. "We were open, and nobody is going to turn down open shots."

The fans were ready to explode anticipating the record-setting 3. Reserve point guard Patrick Beverley drove for a one-handed dunk with 1:04 remaining, prompting a mix of cheers and groans.

Beverley took a hard foul from Draymond Green on a 3-point try with 34 seconds left. Beverley and Green snapped at one another, prompting a heated argument between several players. Green and Morris were ejected.

"Some nights, it's not your night and it wasn't ours and we didn't play particularly well," Jackson said. "That doesn't mean, lay down and surrender. That's not in our DNA."

But the Warriors had to be a bit demoralized, because the Rockets seemed to make every outside shot they took. They went 7 for 10 from 3-point range in the first quarter and 14 for 18 in the first half. Milwaukee had 14 3s in a half against Phoenix in March 2006 and New York matched that total twice last season - against Portland on March 14 and against Boston on April 17.

Curry, though, had the most spectacular shot before the break, just beating the buzzer with a half-court shot to cut Houston's lead to 77-62.

But Golden State's perimeter defense was no better in the third quarter, and 3-pointers by Parsons and Lin stretched the gap past 20. Harrison Barnes ran out to guard Lin on his next 3-point attempt, and Lin blew by him for a layup and an 87-64 Houston lead.

"They were hitting the open looks, they were hitting the contested shots," Lee said. "And then when they hit outside jumpers, their shot fake works because you have to close out tighter. They shot the ball great, really from top to bottom."

Notes: The Warriors have lost 15 of their last 17 games against the Rockets, and nine in a row in Houston. ... Golden State dropped to 8-1 this season when scoring at least 30 points in the first quarter. ... The Rockets set season highs for first-quarter and first-half points. ... Houston had never had more than 17 3-pointers in a game.

THE FACTS: The Golden State Warriors could only watch helplessly as the Houston Rockets rained 3-pointers in near record-setting fashion.

Jeremy Lin scored 28 points and dished out nine assists, James Harden finished with 18 points, seven assists and three steals, and the Rockets matched an NBA record with 23 3-pointers in a 140-109 rout of the Warriors on Tuesday at Toyota Center. Omer Asik (11 points, 15 rebounds) and Patrick Patterson (12 points, 10 boards) each added a double-double for Houston (27-23), which has won five of its last six games overall and 10 of 13 at home.

Jarrett Jack led Golden State (30-18), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, with 20 points and five assists. David Lee chipped in with 18 points and seven rebounds for the Warriors, who allowed the Rockets to record their highest scoring total in Toyota Center history.

QUOTABLE: "I really didn't even know we had a chance to break the record until late in the game. We shoot a lot of 3s. That's just what we do."

THE STAT: Houston tied the NBA record with 23 made 3-pointers, outscoring the Warriors 69-9 from behind the arc. The Orlando Magic were the last team to reach this milestone, knocking down 23 of 37 attempts from downtown Jan. 13, 2009 in Sacramento. The Rockets might have set the record if not for Golden State's intentional fouls over the final 35 seconds of the contest.

TURNING POINT: The Rockets scored on 17 of 23 possessions in the second quarter as they outscored the Warriors 39-25, extending a one-point advantage after the opening period into a 77-62 halftime lead. Golden State's defense struggled so mightily that the game got away from the Warriors after four empty offensive possessions toward the end of the period.

QUOTABLE II: "We're not going to lay down. If you're going to try to get the record, we're going to stop it. ... By no means are we going to accept giving up that many points, giving up open 3s and transition shots. ... We didn't play particularly well, but that doesn't mean lay down and surrender. That's not in our DNA."

HOT: The Rockets' aim from long range was deadly in the first half as they buried 14 of 18 attempts (77.8 percent) from 3-point range, matching the NBA record for most treys in a half. Houston's crisp ball movement -- 22 assists on 26 baskets -- and unselfish play kept Golden State defenders scrambling, opening space on the court that led to several open looks from the perimeter.

NOT: Stephen Curry (seven points) did a nice job of setting up his teammates, but his usually smooth stroke was absent. The fourth-year sharpshooter shot 3-for-12 (25.0 percent) from the field and attempted zero free throws.

GOOD MOVE: With veteran wing Carlos Delfino sidelined with loose cartilage in his right elbow, McHale called upon James Anderson to fill the gap in his rotation. Anderson responded to receiving his most significant playing time as a Rocket by posting eight points, eight boards and four assists to go with some excellent off-ball activity.

BAD MOVE: Golden State's defense was too timid in its attempts to trap Houston's ball-handlers, and the Warriors also seemed a step slow when the Rockets forced them to switch. The slow rotations prevented Golden State from sealing off driving and passing lanes, which only made matters worse considering Houston's unconscious shooting from the outside.

NOTABLE: Golden State's Draymond Green and Houston's Marcus Morris were ejected with 34.1 seconds left after Green committed a flagrant foul on Houston's Patrick Beverley while he was throwing up the potential record-setting 3-pointer. ... Warriors center Andrew Bogut will miss Wednesday's game at Oklahoma City as part of the club's plan to rest him on one night of back-to-back sets. Bogut underwent ankle surgery in April and returned to Golden State's lineup only eight days ago after taking time off for rehabilitation. ... Delfino is listed as day-to-day but said he will not play in Wednesday's matchup with Miami. ... Former Rocket Yao Ming made a surprise appearance at Houston's morning shootaround. Yao is currently studying economics at Jiao Tong University in Shanghai. ... The Rockets last reached 140 points in a 156-147 double-overtime defeat April 11, 1995 in Dallas. ... Houston's 77 first-half points are the most any NBA team has scored before halftime this season. ... Harden has attempted less than 16 shots in six consecutive contests after attempting at least 17 in 17 games in a row. ... At least six Rockets have scored in double figures in three straight games. ... Houston, which handed out a season-high 35 assists, improved to 6-1 this season when it registers at least 30 assists. ...
