Sparked by the return of their starting point guard, the Washington Wizards have played like a different team following their forgettable start.

The Sacramento Kings, however, can't seem to find an answer for their season-long struggles.

The Wizards will try for their first six-game home winning streak in six years on Monday night when they host the Kings, losers of four straight.

After a 4-28 start, Washington (11-31) no longer has the NBA's worst record after moving a half game ahead of Charlotte with a 114-101 victory over Minnesota on Friday.

The Wizards have shown they can get it done in different ways during their surge.

After shooting a season-high 57.8 percent against the Timberwolves, they won a defensive battle, 86-73, over Central Division-leading Chicago on Saturday.

With a victory over the sliding Kings, Washington will have its longest home winning streak since a 10-game run during the 2006-07 season.

"We are the team we thought we were supposed to be," center Emeka Okafor said.

While their run began just before John Wall returned from a left knee injury, the Wizards certainly have built some momentum while playing with a healthy lineup for the first time.

Wall has averaged 14.1 points and 6.7 assists, helping Washington win six of his nine games.

"It's not just me, man. It's never just me. I wanted to come in and be a spark for the team," said Wall, who moved back into the starting lineup against Minnesota. "I'm just doing a great job of getting easy shots for my teammates."

After averaging 89.2 points on 40.9 percent shooting in their first 34 games, the Wizards have put up 99.9 while shooting 47.2 percent from the field in their last eight.

Washington should be able to keep it going against the Kings, who haven't been able to stop anybody recently. Sacramento (16-29) has allowed 111.5 points on 49.4 percent shooting over their four-game skid.

The Kings couldn't stop Bradley Beal in their first look at the Wizards on Jan. 16 - the rookie scored a season-high 26 points and hit 6 of 7 from 3-point range - but managed to contain everyone else. Tyreke Evans made one of two free throws with 11.4 seconds left and finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a 95-94 win.

John Salmons and DeMarcus Cousins also scored 21 apiece to help the Kings finish with a season-best 62 points in the paint.

Cousins, however, will be looking to bounce back after finishing with a season-low three points in a 121-93 loss at Denver on Saturday. It was the first time in his past 17 games he failed to score in double figures.

Sacramento will also need to take better care of the basketball. It's averaged 21.0 turnovers in its last three games after giving it up 20 times against the Nuggets.

"(We) have to play a controlled basketball game," coach Keith Smart said. "I thought our passes were shaky that led to 25 points on 20 turnovers."

It may be a difficult task against a Washington team that has forced 34 turnovers in its last two games.

Sacramento has won three of four against the Wizards, including a 115-107 victory last February that snapped a six-game losing streak in Washington.

Thomas' shot ends Kings' skid, top Wizards 96-94

WASHINGTON (AP) With the score tied and only a few seconds to play, the hottest player on the court faced off against a defender who had been riding the bench all game.

It was no contest.

Isaiah Thomas took the inbounds pass and sized up Garrett Temple immediately, driving to the middle of the lane to put in a left-handed floater with 1 second remaining, giving the Sacramento Kings a 96-94 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

"I seen a guy that was guarding me that hasn't played the whole game, so I felt I had the opportunity to take him," Thomas said with a smile. "And he kind of forced me to my strong hand, so I just wanted to make a play and it happened to go in."

Thomas had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and also had seven assists as the Kings broke a four-game losing streak. Francisco Garcia added 17 points for Sacramento in a game that included 16 ties and no lead bigger than seven points.

At the end, there was little doubt that Thomas would take the last shot. The message from coach Keith Smart: Don't settle for a jumper.

"You're going to get by his guy or get a foul. Or you can make a quick play," Smart said. "I thought he did the right thing by driving the basket and getting his little floater. All that drill work he does every day and that little floater gave us a big win."

Emeka Okafor scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and John Wall had 19 points and six assists for the Wizards, whose home winning streak ended at five games. Still, Washington is 6-4 and has been competitive in every game since Wall's return from a knee injury - including a one-point loss at Sacramento on Jan. 16 - and it speaks volumes that their close losses are no longer seen as moral victories.

"I hope it does hurt us a little bit," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "It stings."

Wittman will get second-guessed for the way this one ended. After Martell Webster tied the game on a short jumper with 7.9 seconds to play, the coach figured the best way to stop Thomas was by putting in Temple, who played all of 13 seconds in the game - all in the final half-minute.

"I wanted to try something different. ... We didn't have anybody that could guard him," Wittman said.

Okafor's jumper with 2:26 to play tied the game at 88, and Thomas made 1 of 2 free throws with 2:14 remaining to start a series of back-and-forth, one-point leads that finally ended when Tyreke Evans made a pair from the line to put Sacramento ahead 93-90 with 19.6 seconds remaining.

Wall's layup pulled the Wizards within one with 12.6 to go, and Evans made 1 of 2 free throws with 11.7 remaining to make the score 94-92.

Webster then tied the game, giving the Kings the chance to set up the winning shot for Thomas, one that deflated a Wizards team that has only recently become accustomed to winning at home.

Perhaps the most glaring statistic for Washington: 20 turnovers to go with 20 assists.

"I think we just got in a mind-state in a certain point of that game," Webster said, "where we just kind of felt like, `Oh, we can outscore these guys.' ... We let them get the best of us, and we can't let them impede on our poise. And we did."

Notes: The Kings had been plagued by turnovers during their losing streak - averaging 21 over their previous three games - but they committed only 11 against the Wizards. ... Washington rookie G Bradley Beal, who has been bothered by a sore right wrist, played only three minutes in the fourth quarter and finished with six points on 2-for-6 shooting. Beal hurt the wrist against Denver on Jan. 18. X-rays have been negative. ... Kings C DeMarcus Cousins, who scored a season-low three points in a loss at Denver on Saturday, didn't play the fourth quarter Monday and finished with 12 points. ... Sacramento F John Salmons played the entire first quarter, then left with a stomach virus and did not return.

THE FACTS: Isaiah Thomas scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter including the the game-winning floater with 1.9 seconds remaining as the Sacramento Kings snapped a four-game losing streak with a 96-94 win over the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

Francisco Garcia sank four 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Tyreke Evans had 13 for the Kings (17-29), who turned up their defensive effort in the second half, holding the Wizards to 38.9 percent shooting and 37 points.

The game included 11 lead changes and 16 ties, the last one coming as Martell Webster's driving layup pulled Washington even at 94-all with 7.9 seconds left. Following a timeout, Thomas received the inbounds pass, darted left and maneuvered just inside the free throw line for the lofted and accurate score.

Emeka Okafor had a season-high 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Wizards (11-32), who had won 7 of 10 games. John Wall finished with 19 points and Webster scored 18.

THE STAT: The Wizards committed 20 turnovers, leading to 23 points for Sacramento. The Kings had averaged 20.3 turnovers of their own over their last games, but finished with only 11 against the Wizards.

QUOTABLE II: " We didn't have anybody that could guard him. I couldn't find anyone that could guard him tonight. That was disappointing, especially as the game went on. He got anywhere he wanted to. Right, left, and the kid made the play at the end."

HOT: With the Kings trailing 32-27 after the first quarter, Garcia came into the game and drained four 3-pointers and 5 of 7 shots in the second quarter, finishing with 15 points.

NOT: Nene scored four points on 2 of 8 shooting, but it was the fourth quarter miscues that proved most problematic. The Brazilian big man committed four turnovers in the fourth quarter, two coming inside the final 26 seconds.

QUOTABLE III: " I don't think we turned the ball over as much and we got the stops when we needed them. We dialed in on the defensive end and got stops, especially in the last couple of minutes.

GOOD MOVE: Kings coach Keith Smart elected to use rookie forward Thomas Robinson in the fourth quarter over DeMarcus Cousins, who had no answer for Okafor throughout the game. Though outrebounded 45-35 on the game, Sacramento held a 9-7 advantage in the fourth quarter and Smart credited Robinson's energy as being a defensive catalyst.

NOTABLE: After going without a double-double over his first 24 games this season, Okafor has 10 in his last 19 games.
