Clippers-Warriors Preview

The first day of 2013 brought a different result for the Los Angeles Clippers than the final month of 2012, and the next several days in this new year might not be much easier.

After the franchise's longest win streak came to an end, the Clippers continue their challenging stretch with Wednesday night's visit to the Golden State Warriors, the first of two matchups in four days between the top two teams in the Pacific Division.

The Clippers (25-7) became one of three NBA teams all-time to go 16-0 in any month in December, and their 17 straight wins entering the new year marked the longest run in the league since Boston won 19 in a row in 2008-09.

Los Angeles, though, couldn't keep the run going past New Year's Day as it lost 92-78 in a visit to the NBA's top home team, Denver.

No Clippers player had more than 12 points, with Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe each reaching that number as the team shot a season-low 38.5 percent. Los Angeles was converting at a 48.5 percent clip during its win streak, which began Nov. 28.

"We were all a step slower today," Griffin said. "We've got to be better than that. We're not going to sit and cry on the plane and get beat down. We're not going to cause ourselves to lose our confidence, despite what people want us to do. That's the best thing about the NBA - you've got another game."

The next one is against a surprising Warriors team that's won three straight overall and nine of 11 at home. Golden State (21-10) has held each of its past three opponents to fewer than 90 points.

"We are a hundred times better defensively than we were last year, and that's why our record reflects that," point guard Stephen Curry said. "We just have to stick to it."

The Warriors allowed a season-low 36.0 percent shooting in a 101-83 home win over Boston on Saturday while converting 52.1 percent at the other end of the floor, including 12 of 19 from 3-point range. Curry was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc en route to a team-best 22 points and David Lee had 20 on 10-of-15 shooting.

"The bottom line is it's been a great year for us," coach Mark Jackson said. "2012 has been real good to us. We will put it behind us and now look forward to doing great things in 2013."

Jackson's club has already beaten the Clippers once this season, winning 114-110 on the road Nov. 3. Curry and Carl Landry each had 23 points while the Warriors overcame 27 apiece from Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford.

Paul is averaging 25.5 points in his last four games against Golden State but the Clippers have lost three of those matchups, including a 104-97 defeat in their most recent visit to Oakland on Feb. 20. The Los Angeles point guard had a team-best 24 points in that game while Lee had 24 and 13 rebounds for Golden State.

The Clippers will play the Warriors again Saturday night at Staples Center after facing the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Golden State, meanwhile, will have two days of rest between those matchups.

Warriors hand Clippers 2nd straight loss, 115-94

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry's shooting stroke flowed so smoothly he swished shots without even looking at the basket.

At one point, the Los Angeles Clippers cornered Curry on the sideline near the Golden State Warriors' bench. The 6-foot-10 Lamar Odom tried to crowd Curry out of bounds, and the diminutive point guard never hesitated to chuck up the shot.

"I lost sight of the rim and I knew it was going in," Curry said. "I haven't been that locked-in in a while."

Curry scored 25 of his 31 points in the first half, David Lee finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds and the Warriors coasted past the ailing Clippers 115-94 on Wednesday night.

After winning a franchise-record 17 straight games, Los Angeles has suddenly dropped two straight and has Golden State surging from behind.

Curry made nine of his first 10 shots, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, and added eight assists and six rebounds to pace Golden State's 26-8 spurt to start the game. His twice-surgically repaired right ankle healthy again, Curry - along with Lee - is making a strong case to be the first All-Star for the Warriors since Latrell Sprewell in 1997.

"If my two guys didn't make a statement, I don't know what else they have to," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. Later, he added, "Maybe I'll hold my own game if these two guys aren't in there."

Jackson talked before the game about how he had a board installed at the team's headquarters that shows the NBA standings before players walk out to the practice court. One day over the holiday break, the Warriors official in charge of updating the standings was off, and players pitched a fit when the board shorted them a win.

For a franchise that has missed the playoffs all but once since 1994, it's hard not to pay attention to the latest Pacific Division standings: The Warriors (22-10) are only 2 1/2 games behind the Clippers (25-8).

Jamal Crawford scored 24 points on a sore left foot and Chris Paul had 23 points and six rebounds for the Clippers, playing with heavy hearts after learning of the death of owner Donald Sterling's son earlier in the day. Small forward Caron Butler also wasn't with Los Angeles because of personal reasons.

After owning the NBA's longest winning streak since the Boston Celtics rolled off 19 consecutive games from Nov. 15 to Dec. 23, 2008, Los Angeles has struggled to shoot in losses at Denver and Golden State. The Clippers shot 38.5 percent in Tuesday night's 92-78 loss at Denver and 36.4 percent at Golden State, ending a difficult 24 hours for the franchise.

Scott Ashley Sterling was found dead of an apparent drug overdose at his Malibu home late Tuesday night, authorities said. He was 32.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said before the game the Sterling family's loss was "first and foremost on everybody's mind." He also said he wanted to "see what we're made of" in the first game since his team's record winning streak ended, especially considering the Clippers lost four straight before their record run.

Instead, the Warriors became the first team to beat the Clippers twice this season.

"We were just not sharp," Del Negro said.

"We just kind of hit a little bit of a wall," said Clippers forward Blake Griffin, who had 10 points and six rebounds. "They completely outplayed us tonight in almost every area."

This was no normal Clippers-Warriors matchup.

Every fan received a "Winter Whiteout" T-shirt to watch two perennial losing franchises that are among the NBA's hottest and most surprising this season. The two franchises had never met with both in first and second in the same division at the turn of the new year, going back to the 1978-89 season when the Clippers moved West from Buffalo.

The Warriors built a big lead in a hurry from beyond the arc and never relented. Curry, Barnes and Klay Thompson each swished a 3-pointer to give Golden State an 18-point lead late in the first quarter.

"That set the tone better than we have ever this year," Curry said.

Former Warriors small forward Matt Barnes brought the Clippers back, igniting a 27-5 run while hustling hard on both ends. Barnes, who started in Butler's place, converted a pair of 3s and a running layup to slice Golden State's lead to four early in the second quarter.

Curry returned and helped the Warriors go 12 for 23 from long range. He also started a three-point play with a running shot off the backboard while getting fouled by Paul, pumping his chest with both arms in an emphatic celebration. The Warriors led 62-49 at the break behind Curry, whose 25 points were the most a Warriors player has scored in any half this season.

"When he's in a rhythm like that, I don't talk a whole lot to him. I just try to set screens and give him any kind of daylight, because he's a special player," Lee said.

After the Warriors took a 68-49 lead on Festus Ezeli's dunk early in the third quarter, Los Angeles dodged its biggest tumble of the night.

Griffin twisted in the air and landed hard on his right shoulder and head when Ezeli reached in on his arms. After officials reviewed video replays, they called a flagrant 1 foul against Ezeli, which might have been Jackson's only complaint all game.

"He's a great actor," Jackson said. "I've seen those Kia commercials."

NOTES: Del Negro was named Western Conference Coach of the Month of December on Wednesday. Larry Brown (March 1992) is the only other Clippers coach to win the honor. Paul earned Western Conference Player of the Month. ... Raiders owner Mark Davis, super middleweight boxing champion Andre Ward, musician Carlos Santana and former NBA player Kenny Smith were among those in attendance.

THE FACTS: Stephen Curry scored 31 points and added eight assists and six rebounds as the Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 115-94 Wednesday night to climb within 2 1/2 games of the Pacific Division leaders.

David Lee added 24 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists -- his league-leading 14th game with at least 20 points and 10 boards -- and Klay Thompson tied his career high with five 3-pointers as part of a 19-point night.

Jamal Crawford led the Clippers with 24 points, but Los Angeles -- playing for a second night after losing in Denver on Tuesday -- often looked lethargic in suffering a second straight defeat after winning 17 straight games. They were held to 36.2 percent shooting from the field, a season worst -- even less than their 38.5 percent against the Nuggets.

QUOTABLE: "[Curry] has been great. The guy's an All-Star. Maybe I'll hold my own game if these two guys [Curry and Lee] aren't in there. Maybe that's the answer, but these two guys are All-Stars. Steph Curry played Chris Paul and it looked like two of the best in the business going at it. It was great, because what happens is, the rest of the guys realize, we've got a guy at the head of the snake that's not backing down, and it breeds confidence and breeds life."

THE STAT: In a battle of defenses ranked No. 3 (Clippers) and No. 4 (Warriors) in terms of opponent field-goal percentage, Golden State won big, but even though Los Angeles was finishing a back-to-back, it was hardly a fluke. This is the fifth time in the Warriors' last six games that they've held a club to 40.2 percent shooting or worse -- and Golden State has won all five of those contests.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors' lead never dropped below 10 points in the second half, but maybe the most emblematic moment came at the 9:30 mark of the fourth quarter, when Paul was in the midst of stripping the ball from Jarrett Jack -- only to have play stopped because Crawford, still angry about a non-call on the Clippers' previous possession, was drawing a technical foul behind the action.

HOT: Curry blistered the Clippers in the first half, going 9-for-11 from the floor -- including a 4-for-6 mark behind the arc -- to rack up 25 points and help the Warriors blow out to a 62-49 lead by intermission. That's the biggest single-half output for a Warrior this season. In his last seven games, Curry is shooting 54.4 percent on 3-pointers.

GOOD MOVE: Mark Jackson is loath to call timeouts in the face of an opponent's run, subscribing to the Phil Jackson school of letting his players figure out how to stop the bleeding themselves. But the Warriors coach did so early in the third quarter when the Clippers went on a 7-2 run -- capped by a turnover that led to an uncontested dunk for Paul -- and it helped Golden State steady the ship. Los Angeles eventually shaved another four points off the lead to get to within 72-62, but Golden State never let it slip to a single-digit lead and weathered the storm.

BAD MOVE: Paul played unselfishly, but possibly to a fault, often eschewing open 3-point shots to set up teammates instead -- teammates who more often than not clanked their own shots. Paul finished with 23 points -- 19 in the second half -- but his push came too late to save the Clippers.

ROOKIE WATCH: It was an eventful night for Warriors center Festus Ezeli. Matching up with Blake Griffin put the first-year center in foul trouble almost immediately -- the Vanderbilt product picked up two whistles within 83 seconds -- and was later hit with a flagrant foul when he grabbed Griffin's elbow after getting beaten off the dribble. Griffin landed hard on his left shoulder and head, although Jackson did not agree with the referees' decision and felt it was a bit of dramatics on the part of the All-Star forward. Whatever the case, Griffin was limited to a 2-for-11 performance and 10 points on the night.

NOTABLE: Clippers forward Matt Barnes, a Northern California native and former Warrior, made his second start of the season in place of Caron Butler, who missed the game due to personal reasons. Butler is expected to rejoin the Clippers in Los Angeles on Friday for their all-Staples Center battle with the Lakers. Barnes started hot with 16 first-half points but finished with 19.
