Thunder-Rockets Preview

While the Oklahoma City Thunder didn't have much trouble getting past former teammate James Harden and the Houston Rockets last month, a repeat performance could be tougher.

The Thunder try to avoid losing three straight on the road for the first time in two seasons Saturday night against a Rockets team that's piled up home wins lately.

After failing to work out an extension with Harden, Oklahoma City (22-6) surprisingly sent the reigning Sixth Man of the Year to Houston (16-13) as part of a six-player deal just days before the season started.

The Thunder got the best of the Rockets in the teams' first meeting since the trade, winning 120-98 on Nov. 28 behind 37 points from Kevin Durant and 23 from Serge Ibaka. Harden, meanwhile, finished with 17 on 3-of-16 shooting, though his head may have been elsewhere after Houston stopped in Minnesota earlier that day to attend the funeral of coach Kevin McHale's daughter.

"It's crazy," Durant said afterward. "Seeing (Harden) before the game ... in a different uniform is a little different. We've moved on past it, man. We're happy to see him, glad he's doing well out there in Houston but we wanted this win bad."

That victory was one of 12 straight put together by the Thunder, who've looked a bit shaky since. After suffering back-to-back six-point losses at Minnesota and Miami, Oklahoma City needed overtime to beat Dallas 111-105 at home Thursday. Durant led the way with 40 points, the second time he's scored at least that many in his last four games.

Not including three straight losses in Miami during last season's NBA finals, the Thunder haven't dropped three in a row on the road since February 2011.

The Thunder, winners of seven of 10 in this series, pulled out consecutive road victories over the Rockets before coming up short 96-95 in their last visit Feb. 15. The franchise has dropped 12 of 14 in Houston dating to 2005, when it was still located in Seattle.

Houston hasn't had much trouble protecting its own court of late. The Rockets have won 10 of 12 at home, including four straight by an average of 16.2 points.

They entered Friday riding a season-best five-game overall winning streak but couldn't keep it going at San Antonio, falling 122-116 despite 33 points from Harden. Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin scored a combined 45, but the three top scorers each committed five of the team's season-high 24 turnovers.

The Rockets also struggled to stop the Spurs, who shot 57.1 percent overall and scored 41 points in the first quarter.

"I think it was the start of the game," McHale said. "We had to fight back. I was proud of the guys and how they battled back."

While Houston leads the league with 105.7 points per game, it's giving up 103.1 to rank 29th.

In addition to trying to contain Durant, the Rockets could have their hands full with Ibaka, who had 19 points and a season high-tying 17 rebounds Thursday against the Mavericks. He's averaging a career-high 8.5 boards - 12.3 over his last six games.

"He's been on a rebounding tear," coach Scott Brooks said. "When he plays like that - aggressive on the glass - it seems to open up the other parts of his game and also the rest of the (other) guys' games."

Kevin Martin, acquired in the Harden deal, is averaging 15.8 points and will surely be looking to come out strong in his first return to Houston. The Thunder are 14-1 when he scores at least 16, and he had 17 against the Rockets last month.

Thunder roll to 124-94 win over Rockets

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant made one of his first eight shots, and the Oklahoma City Thunder were clinging to a two-point lead in the second quarter on Saturday against the Houston Rockets.

Then, Durant and the Thunder got going and finished the night with their best offensive performance on the road since 2009.

Russell Westbrook scored 28 points and Durant added 26 as the Thunder built a big lead in the second quarter and rolled to a 124-94 win over Houston. It was their largest road win since beating the Clippers 126-85 on April 15, 2009.

"I started off terrible and I just wanted to get going," Durant said. "I just wanted to come out and shoot a good shot, and I was able to get started."

Durant scored 11 points during a 16-0 run by the Thunder to end the first half and extend the lead to 18. Oklahoma City had another big run early in the third quarter to put the game further out of reach.

"The end of the second quarter is what pushed us over the top, and that third quarter was really good as well," Durant said. "We started off so well, got some steals, got some fast-break points. So it was a good one."

Former Thunder sixth man James Harden scored 25 for the Rockets, who went cold on offense for long stretches.

"(We were) careless with the ball," Harden said. "I don't know how to explain everything, but at least get a shot up and not turn the ball over."

It was Oklahoma City's second win this season over Houston, after taking the first meeting 120-98.

Kevin Martin, who came to Oklahoma City in the trade for Harden, finished with 19 points and five 3-pointers. Westbrook had eight rebounds and eight assists.

Oklahoma City improved to 12-3 when Durant and Westbrook each score more than 20 points.

"I felt comfortable," Westbrook said. "It's probably the first night all year I shot the ball well. I've got to put two games together."

Marcus Morris scored a career-high 24 points for Houston in its most lopsided loss of the season.

Oklahoma City was up by six before the Rockets used an 8-4 spurt to close the gap to 52-50 with 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The Thunder took control after that, scoring the last 16 points of the half to extend their lead to 68-50 at the break. Durant got it going, scoring the first eight points in that span. He also finished it off, sinking a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left in the quarter.

All but five of Durant's 16 first-half points came in that stretch.

The Rockets couldn't do anything right during that time, committing four turnovers and missing six shots.

"I told the guys there's a flow in the game and you've got to recognize that flow sometimes and you've got to know when it's time to make the extra pass, when it's time to be extra careful with the ball," Houston coach Kevin McHale said.

Houston had cut its 18-point halftime deficit to 13 early in the third quarter before it hit another scoring drought, going more than 5 minutes without a field goal.

Harden made one free throw during that span as the Thunder added 17 points to pad the lead to 87-58.

The Thunder had a season-high 16 steals to help in the win.

Houston had five shots blocked in that stretch. The problems started when Kendrick Perkins blocked two layups by Chandler Parsons 3 seconds apart. Durant blocked a jump shot by Harden the next time down the court and Thabo Sefolosha blocked a layup by Jeremy Lin about a minute later. The last one was also by Perkins, on a jump shot by Omer Asik.

Martin made two 3-pointers in less than a minute near the end of the first quarter to give the Thunder a 31-26 lead entering the second.

The Thunder were up by three points in the second quarter before using a 9-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Martin, to extend the lead to 44-35 about 7 minutes before halftime.

NOTES: Royce White, the 16th overall pick in the June draft, was assigned to Houston's D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. White has spent most of the season on Houston's inactive list while he and the team figure out how to handle his anxiety disorder and overall mental health. The move looks to be a positive step in White's return to the court. ... Harden has scored 20 or more points in a career-high 12 straight games. ... Houston's Patrick Patterson returned after missing the last seven games with a bone bruise in his right foot. He had two points and two rebounds in just more than 10 minutes. ... Houston G Toney Douglas tied a career high with five steals.

THE FACTS: The Oklahoma City Thunder did not have to be at their best for most of Saturday's victory over the Houston Rockets. All that mattered was how well it played at the conclusion of quarters.

Russell Westbrook finished with 28 points, eight assists and eight rebounds, and Kevin Durant scored 26 points as the Thunder roughed up Houston 124-94 on Saturday at Toyota Center. Former Rocket Kevin Martin added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, for Oklahoma City (23-6), which snapped a two-game skid on the road while earning its 14th victory in its last 16 games.

Marcus Morris paced Houston (16-14), which lost at home for the first time in five games, with a career-high 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting and six boards. James Harden chipped in 25 points but delivered another dismal shooting performance (6-for-17) against his former team.

QUOTABLE: "We know that [Houston] has been playing very, very well as of late, and they were scoring a lot of points. ... We just wanted to get back on defense, take good shots and not turn the ball over. I think our point guard did a really good job of setting the tone."

THE STAT: The Thunder rocked the Rockets at the end of the first and second quarters, finishing those periods on 12-2 and 16-0 runs, respectively.

TURNING POINT: The Rockets did an impressive job of containing Durant for nearly a half, but the superstar forward began to impose his will over the final 3:30 of the second quarter. Durant scored seven consecutive points and stole the ball once to jump start a 16-0 Thunder run to close the first half. Houston never recovered.

HOT: Westbrook, who reached 27 points for the third time in his last five outings, drained at least half of his shots from the field for only the second time this month. The fifth-year floor general has averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 2.6 steals over the last five games.

GOOD MOVE: After allowing Houston to rack up 20 points in the paint during the first period, Oklahoma City's defense became more committed to sagging toward the rim and forcing the Rockets to beat it with outside shots. That adjustment worked wonders, as Houston mustered only 16 points in the paint over the next two quarters.

QUOTABLE III: "I thought our bigs did a good job. ... I thought they all did a good job of protecting the basket and not giving them easy points in transition, because [Houston is] one of the best in the league at doing it."

NOT: Houston's starting backcourt of Harden and Jeremy Lin combined for eight turnovers and connected on only 9-for-25 (36.0 percent), including a 2-for-10 (20.0 percent) effort from behind the arc.

BAD MOVE: For the second time in two meetings with his former team, Harden was guilty of pressing. The fourth-year guard failed to display the same trust in his teammates that he appeared to be developing over the last couple of weeks, choosing to drive into multiple defenders and attempt deep jump shots more often than usual.

NOTABLE: Durant and Kendrick Perkins wore shoes that had "Ryder Rozier" and "12-15-12" written on them in honor of a Guthrie-area child who was fatally shot on accident two weeks ago. ... Houston's Patrick Patterson returned to the lineup after missing the last seven games with a bone bruise in his right foot, recording two boards and missing all five of his shot attempts in 10-plus minutes off the bench. Coach Kevin McHale said Marcus Morris will continue to start until Patterson's conditioning is well enough for the third-year forward to increase his playing time. ... Rockets reserve forward Carlos Delfino (food poisoning) sat out for the second game in a row. ... During the game, Houston announced that rookie Royce White will be sent to the franchise's Developmental League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. White has not participated in an NBA or D-League contest in his brief career. ... The Thunder set a season high for points scored, surpassing the 120 it posted in a November 28 home win over Houston. ... Oklahoma City improved to 15-1 this season when Martin nets at least 16 points and 12-3 when Westbrook and Durant each score at least 20. ... The Thunder, which collected a season-high 16 steals, is now 11-1 when it records at least 10 steals. ... Houston has allowed at least 68 points during the first half of each of its last two games. ... The Rockets fell to 1-7 this season when they make fewer 3-pointers than their opponent. ... Houston had won its previous four home contests by an average of 16.2 points.
