The Philadelphia 76ers have lost six straight on the road, but that's not the only reason coach Doug Collins isn't in a good mood during the holidays.

Things probably won't get any easier Wednesday night against a Memphis Grizzlies team that is 12-2 at home and coming off its worst loss of the season.

Philadelphia (13-15) is making the second stop on an eight-game road stretch after falling 95-92 at Brooklyn on Sunday. The 76ers returned home for Christmas before heading West on a trip that will be capped by three difficult sets of games on back-to-back days.

"The thing I don't like about our schedule is it's so imbalanced in that way too many home games in a stretch or period of time, way too many road," Collins said. "I don't like that kind of imbalance and the reason I don't is if you lose a key player and you're at home and you lose four or five home games, that's tough to make up. And you can get yourself in a spin, and when you get in that spin, it is hard to get out."

The daunting stretch of road games got off to a bad start Sunday, and Collins was not happy that the Nets shot 30 free throws compared to the 76ers' 10.

"I gotta be real careful because I don't want to give away my holiday money so I gotta be real careful," said Collins, whose club has lost six of seven overall.

Philadelphia is enduring its longest road slide since dropping eight straight Nov. 10-Dec. 3, 2010.

While fatigue could affect the Sixers on this trip, it looked like a major factor in the Grizzlies' 121-96 loss at Houston on Saturday. Memphis (18-7) had a four-game win streak snapped as it allowed its most points and highest field-goal percentage (53.7) of the season.

"We just had no juice, no energy and were not mentally tough," coach Lionel Hollins said. "We just kind of packed it in early and I decided to give some other guys a look in the fourth quarter and they didn't do much better."

It was an uncharacteristic effort for the Grizzlies, who are allowing a Western Conference-low 90.5 points per game.

"We're going to try to move on from this game and it's just not easy," said leading scorer Rudy Gay, who was held to a season-low six points - 12.2 below his average.

One key matchup Wednesday will be at point guard between Philadelphia leading scorer Jrue Holiday and Memphis' Mike Conley.

Holiday is averaging 18.3 points and is second among East players with 8.8 assists per game. He's also averaging 3.7 turnovers as he gets ready to face Conley - one of the league leaders with 2.5 steals per game.

Second-year Sixers center Lavoy Allen has 18 points and 16 rebounds over two games since moving back into the starting lineup and will match up against a Grizzlies frontcourt that features Zach Randolph, who leads the league with 21 double-doubles and has four straight versus Philadelphia.

"I've always said with Lavoy it's the motor," Collins said. "If the motor's running, he plays well."

The Sixers are 0-3 against Memphis since drafting Evan Turner in 2010. Turner, averaging 15.3 points this season, has totaled 12 points on 5-of-18 shooting in those games.

Wright, Hawes lead Sixers past Grizzlies 99-89

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Dorell Wright seized the opportunity to step into the starting lineup in place of the injured Jason Richardson and responded with his best scoring performance of the season.

Wright scored 28 points and Spencer Hawes had 20, also a season high, and the Philadelphia 76ers snapped a six-game road losing streak with a 99-89 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

Richardson's balky lower back allowed Wright to start his fifth game of the season. He connected on 8 of 11 from the field, part of the Sixers shooting 52 percent. Wright hit 5 of 8 from long range as Philadelphia made nine of its 16 shots outside the arc.

"It's a lot different," Wright said of the starting role. "That's what I did the last two years (in Golden State). Coming here, that was one of the things I had to sacrifice, coming off the bench. I've been happy with my role. Being able to step up in front for (Richardson) was great. I had the opportunity to make some shots and help the team win. It's always cool whatever job coach (Doug Collins) wants me to do."

Thaddeus Young and Jrue Holiday had 13 points each for Philadelphia, Holiday adding nine assists. Nick Young finished with 12 points. Hawes blocked five shots, part of Philadelphia recording a season-high 12 rejections.

Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Marc Gasol had 18 points and eight rebounds. Quincy Pondexter scored 13 and Mike Conley had 10 for Memphis, which lost its second straight.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said he didn't think his team's effort was "on par," and he didn't find the right combination of players who would run offensive schemes and play with the right intensity until it was too late in the fourth quarter.

"It's effort. It's effort on defense, and it's effort on offense," Hollins said. "We get the ball, we have to run up the court with some pace. We have to move the ball quickly. We've got too much ball-sticking. We have too much walking."

The Grizzlies played the game without leading scorer Rudy Gay, who was not with the team. Team officials listed his absence as "personal reasons."

The Sixers held a 16-2 advantage in fastbreak points and outrebounded the Grizzlies 38-37, despite Thaddeus Young, who averages a team-best 7.4 rebounds a game, ending the night with only two boards.

"You know what I was doing most of the night," Young said of his two rebounds. "Just pretty much face-guarding and trying to keep Zach and the other guys off the glass. But it is huge if we can get the rebounds, get out in transition and get easy buckets because (the Grizzlies) thrive off getting boards, offensive rebounds and getting in transition."

The Sixers took control of the game in the early stages of the fourth quarter, when they built the lead to as many as 15 points, enough of a buffer to endure a Memphis rally later in the period.

The Sixers, who trailed by 10 points in the second quarter, rallied for a 49-47 halftime lead as Wright had 13 points, including 2 of 4 from outside the arc.

Philadelphia scored the final eight points of the half to erase a six-point Memphis lead.

"We had the nice finish to go up two at the half," Collins said, later adding: "We made some big shots to give us momentum going into the half, and we took the halftime lead, which I thought was very important."

The real burst came from Hawes entering the game. Gasol had scored 12 first-quarter points against Lavoy Allen. Hawes not only shut down Gasol, but added 11 points, hitting 5 of 7 shots, part of the Sixers connecting at a 50 percent clip in the first half.

"It was something we knew we needed coming in," Hawes said of matching the Grizzlies duo of Randolph and Gasol. "Playing against a frontline like them, that's as good a 1-2 punch in the frontcourt as you are going to see. They had a little bit of a size, maybe a bit of girth, advantage, but I thought we could match that and counter that with being active and long."

Collins said the Sixers knew Memphis was going to pound the ball inside to open the second half, but Philadelphia was able to withstand the Grizzlies push. The teams remained close though the third period as Wright continued to connect, and the score was tied at 64 after Conley made a 3-pointer for Memphis.

The Sixers, who were maintaining a 50-percent shooting touch, were able to use a late mini-rally to carry a 75-70 lead into the fourth period.

Philadelphia extended its lead to 83-73 with consecutive 3-pointers from Royal Ivey and Young and a baseline jumper from Hawes.

Memphis brought the bulk of its starting lineup back at that point, but it didn't stop the Sixers rally. The lead would eventually reach 15 points on Ivey's second 3-pointer of the period with just under 8 minutes to play.

"We just had no energy," Randolph said of the Grizzlies. "We played hard, but couldn't run anymore. We didn't get stops. . They had open jump shots all night. It's a combination of them playing well and taking advantage of us."

NOTES: NASCAR Nationwide series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who lives south of Memphis in Olive Branch, Miss., attended the game and participated in tricycle race with a fan during a first-half timeout. Stenhouse won. ... In three games against the Grizzlies in his career, Evan Turner entered the game with a total of 12 points. He scored one Wednesday night. ... The Sixers previous high for blocks this season was 11 at Cleveland on Nov. 21. ... The Sixers were playing the second game of an eight-game road trip.

THE FACTS: Philadelphia coach Doug Collins put 6-foot-9 forward Dorrell Wright into the starting lineup to match up against Rudy Gay of Memphis. At the time, he didn't know Gay wasn't with the team due to personal reasons. Collins also had no idea Wright, who was taking the place of the injured Jason Richardson, would respond with a season-high and game-high 28 points to help the Sixers beat the Grizzlies 99-89 at FedExForum.

THE STAT: The Sixers used just three bench players, but they managed to outscore the Grizzlies bench 38-19. No Memphis reserve scored in double figures while the Sixers got 20 from Spencer Hawes and 12 from Nick Young.

TURNING POINT: After trailing for most of the second half, the Grizzlies pulled to within 75-73 with 10:30 left in the game. But Philadelphia answered with a 13-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the game 88-73 with 7:51 to play.

HOT: Wright was on fire from start to finish for the Sixers. He connected on 8-for-11, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Wright also contributed with six rebounds and a couple of blocks.

NOT: The Grizzlies four-guard rotation of Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Jerryd Bayless and Wayne Ellington were a combined 8-for-37 (.216) from the floor for 20 points. Conley himself missed 14 of 17.

QUOTABLE II: "I think we need to have the same commitment we had earlier in the season. I plan on doing that. We have to get back to it. This is still early in the season. We had a good month at the beginning of the season. I think there was miscommunication. ... We just have to come out and play our game. We have to get back on the same page."

NOTABLE: Wednesday's game was the Philadelphia's second in an eight-game road trip, but first of seven straight against Western Conference teams. They became just the third team to win in FedExForum this season, joining Denver and Atlanta. It was also just the Sixers fifth road win of the season. ... Evan Turner scored just one point for Philadelphia and missed all four of his shot attempts and committed six turnovers. But Collins was pleased with Turner's ability to do other things to help his team win. Turner tied teammate Jrue Holiday with a game-high nine assists and added six rebounds a couple of steals. ... Also coming up big for the Sixers was backup center Hawes. Hawes scored a season-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds and five of the team's 12 blocked shots. ... While Gay was absent for the Grizzlies, the Sixers were playing with out Richardson, who has a low back strain. ... After shooting 62 in the opening quarter, the Grizzlies lost their touch in the second quarter, shooting just 28 percent, which allowed the Sixers to take a 49-47 halftime lead. They finished the game shooting 39 percent. ... The Grizzlies were led by Zach Randolph, who had 23 points and nine rebounds. Center Marc Gasol had 18 points, eight assists and eight rebounds, but scored just six points after the first quarter.
