Knicks-Rockets Preview

Jeremy Lin became a global phenomenon with the New York Knicks last season.

Now, "Linsanity" has faded, and his struggles with the Houston Rockets are partly why.

Lin will try to bounce back from one of his worst performances of the season in order to help the Rockets continue their dominance of the Knicks in his first meeting with his former team Friday night.

Lin was buried on New York's bench for the first 22 games last season before being called upon to run the point in an act of desperation. He responded by averaging 24.4 points during a seven-game winning streak, which included outscoring Kobe Bryant 38-34 in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 10.

That streak turned the Knicks into a playoff contender and transformed the unknown guard from Harvard into an icon with a catchy name that sold millions in merchandise.

Lin's storybook season, however, came to an end after 35 games due to a torn meniscus, and he watched New York get dumped out of the playoffs in five games by Miami in the opening round.

"When I think back, I think about the games," said Lin, who averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists last season. "The plane rides after the games. The things that we did as a team, whether it was a funny film session or whatever. I think about the memories we had with our team and our coach. How fun that was."

The fun stopped unexpectedly, though, as the Knicks declined to match the Rockets' three-year, $25 million offer to the restricted free agent. Houston had cut him during the 2011-12 preseason.

As a starter with the Rockets (5-7), Lin isn't coming close to matching those dizzying heights with the Knicks. He's scoring 10.0 points per game and dishing out 6.3 assists while shooting 33.3 percent from the floor, and 22.9 from beyond the arc.

Lin's struggles have been clear during the Rockets' 2-3 stretch, making 27.5 percent of his field goals while missing all nine attempts from 3-point range to average 7.4 points.

"It was just one of those things where I haven't had the rhythm I've wanted to have," Lin said. "That'll come over time."

Those problems continued Wednesday, when he had four points and three assists, while James Harden and Patrick Patterson combined for 48 points to snap Houston's three-game slide with a 93-89 win over Chicago.

"I'm happy because we had lost three in a row and needed a win," Lin said. "Me, in terms of how I'm playing, I'm a little disappointed in myself. It's just a matter of continuing to fight, continuing to get better."

While Lin tries to shake out of his funk, Harden continues to be a force, ranking fourth in the NBA with 24.5 points per game.

The guard had 24 points in a 104-92 win over New York (8-2) with Oklahoma City on Jan. 14.

The Rockets have won 13 of the last 14 meetings with the Knicks, including seven in a row at home after winning 97-84 on Jan. 28.

New York, though, is doing just fine without Lin, tying the Grizzlies for the NBA's best record. However, the Knicks are coming off a 114-111 loss at Dallas, where Carmelo Anthony missed a potential go-ahead jumper in the final seconds.

"With the ball in (Anthony's) hands, we'll live and die with that every time," said guard Raymond Felton, who had 18 points and 11 assists.

Anthony is right behind Harden at 24.1 points per game, and he's averaging 34.3 over his last six meetings with Houston. However, he missed last season's matchup with ankle, thumb and wrist injuries.

Parsons leads Rockets to 131-103 win over Knicks

HOUSTON (AP) Jeremy Lin doesn't know if he'll ever perform as well as he did during his charmed February with the New York Knicks last season.

For now he's content to be a key contributor on his new team.

James Harden scored 33 points and Chandler Parsons had a career-high 31 to help the Houston Rockets coast to a 131-103 victory over the Knicks on Friday night. Lin added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his first game against his previous team.

The Rockets carried a 12-point lead into the third, and scored 10 straight points later in the quarter to extend their lead to 21.

Carmelo Anthony scored a season-high 37 for New York, which has dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.

Lin went undrafted out of Harvard and became a sensation with the Knicks last season with a remarkable stretch in February when he scored at least 20 points in nine of 10 games. A high point of that span came when he had 38 points and seven assists in a 92-85 victory over the Lakers on Feb. 10.

The Rockets released Lin before he signed with New York. Lin became a Rocket again when the Knicks decided not to match Houston's three-year, $25 million offer.

"I'm not looking to recreate what happened in New York," said Lin, who has been in a slump lately. "I want to be a consistent player. I want to get better. I don't know what my potential is. I don't know if I can play any better than I did during that stretch, but I'm going to find out to see how close I can get."

He said he's "at peace" with the Knicks not matching Houston's offer, and he's glad to be in Houston.

He'll get another shot at his former team when the Rockets travel to Madison Square Garden on Dec. 17.

"I thought this was one of Jeremy's better games," Houston interim coach Kelvin Sampson said. "He attacked and played with swagger tonight, and that was good to see."

Though Lin and the Rockets got the best of the Knicks in this one, not everything went right for the guard on Friday night.

"I lost part of my tooth on the floor," said Lin, who chipped one of his front teeth while scrambling for the ball near the end of the first half.

Parsons scored 26 points in the first half to surpass his previous career high of 25. The second-year player went 8 for 8 to pile up 18 points in the first quarter. He finished 13 of 17 with four 3-pointers.

"Chandler's just a winner," Sampson said. "Right now he's just in a groove."

Harden, who had nine assists, was a career-best 16 of 16 at the free-throw line to help Houston build its big lead.

"They beat us in every way you can beat a team," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "I know throughout the course of the year or the season you have games like this, but it's not acceptable. We just weren't ready to play and that's on me."

Houston (6-7) set a season high for points and it was the most New York (8-3) has given up this season.

"We've got the record that we have because we've been defending and rebounding the ball," Woodson said. "Our defense has held us in and created offense for us, and now we're just trying to outscore teams and that's not good enough."

Houston was up by 10 before going on a 11-0 run, capped by a 3 from Lin, to stretch the lead to 94-73 with about five minutes left in the third quarter. Anthony got a technical, and Tyson Chandler received a flagrant foul on a play where he and Omer Asik were jostling for a rebound in that span.

Asik had Houston's next seven points before Toney Douglas sunk a 3-pointer at the buzzer to leave the Rockets up 104-80 entering the fourth. The Knicks made just two field goals and had four turnovers in the last eight minutes of the third.

The Knicks used an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 51-50 about 5 1/2 minutes before halftime. A 16-3 spurt by the Rockets, powered by seven points from Harden, put Houston back on top 67-53 with less than 2 minutes left in the second quarter.

Parsons sunk a 3-pointer about a minute later to push Houston's lead to 72-57 at halftime.

Marcus Morris was shaken up with about a minute left in the first quarter fighting for a rebound with Anthony. He fell to the court where he remained for a couple of minutes. He was eventually helped to his feet and taken to the locker room. He returned to the bench with about 11 minutes left in the second quarter and returned to the game about 6 minutes before halftime.

NOTES: Sampson said before the game that there is no change to the family situation that has kept coach Kevin McHale away from the team since Nov. 10. ... New York F/C Rasheed Wallace missed the game because of a sore left foot. ... Houston has won eight straight over New York in Houston and six overall against the Knicks.

THE FACTS: After following an 8-1 start to the season with back-to-back losses in Texas, the New York Knicks suddenly do not look so hot. As far as their defense is concerned, coach Mike Woodson would consider that an understatement.

James Harden scored 16 of his team-high 33 points at the free-throw line and handed out nine assists, and Chandler Parsons netted a career-high 31 points on 13-for-17 shooting to go with four steals, as the Houston Rockets shredded the Knicks' defense with a scorching 51.7 percent shooting performance in a 131-103 rout Friday at Toyota Center.

Carmelo Anthony paced the Knicks (8-3) with 37 points on 14-for-24 shooting, while Raymond Felton added 17 points and eight assists.

In his first meeting with his former club, Houston's Jeremy Lin finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four turnovers. A highly anticipated matchup hardly lived up to its hype thanks in large part to New York's uninspired effort. For Lin and the Rockets (6-7), however, the blowout victory could provide a big boost to the team's morale moving forward.

QUOTABLE: "Today was a big step in the right direction in the way we want to play. ... The way we moved the ball on offense and spread the floor, that's something that we want to build off of." -- Lin.

THE STAT: Toyota Center has been a house of horrors for the Knicks in recent years. New York has dropped eight consecutive decisions in Houston by an average of 14.1 points. Only one of these eight losses has been decided by less than nine points.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks trailed 55-53 with less than five minutes to play in the first half when separate fouls on their top defensive presence and scorer, respectively, allowed the Rockets to create separation. Houston netted five of seven field-goal attempts and shot 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the 4:32 that center Tyson Chandler was sitting on the bench with three fouls. Anthony made matters worse for New York when he committed his third foul on a touchy shove-off while attempting to drive past Marcus Morris. With Anthony's scoring and Chandler's veteran leadership absent, the Rockets finished the second quarter on a furious 17-4 run that pushed their lead to 72-57. The Knicks never recovered.

GOOD MOVE: The Rockets played an aggressive style that allowed them to increase the game's tempo, relentlessly attacking the rim and using quick hands and rotations to strip the ball and disrupt New York's half-court offense. In addition to forcing the Knicks to commit an uncharacteristic amount of turnovers, Houston compiled 44 points in the paint and 23 fast-break points in a little more than two and a half quarters.

QUOTABLE II: "I thought, going into tonight's game, we had an advantage in transition, and if we played defense the way we were capable of playing, we could get out and do what we do best." -- Parsons.

BAD MOVE: The Knicks' defense delivered an atrocious effort throughout the evening, but the moment that truly epitomized its lack of resistance came about midway through the third period. After Anthony clanked a jumper off the backboard, he was too busy complaining to a referee about a missed foul call to run the length of the floor and defend. That created a clear path for Patrick Patterson to please the raucous crowd with an authoritative dunk, which gave Houston its biggest lead of the contest at that point, 89-73.

QUOTABLE III: "They beat us in every way you can beat a team. ... Our effort on the ball guarding -- one-on-one positions -- was awful. It started in Dallas. ... This is unacceptable. We got the record that we had because we were defending ... and now we're just trying to outscore teams." -- Woodson.

HOT: Parsons got the Rockets' offense off to a roaring start, pouring in 18 points on 8-for-8 shooting in the first quarter. Anthony's aim in the opening stanza was also deadly, as the superstar forward drilled four of five 3-point attempts en route to an 18-point period. By halftime, Parsons had a new career high in scoring, and the pair of wing players had combined for 50 points on 20-for-26 shooting.

NOT: The Knicks, who entered Friday averaging the fewest turnovers in the NBA, allowed a season-worst 23 points off 16 giveaways. New York has averaged 15.0 turnovers over its last two games. Anthony has been the main culprit, committing 14 turnovers in this stretch.

NOTABLE: Lin cracked one of his front teeth when he dove for a loose ball during the closing seconds of the first half. ... Houston's Morris left the game in the first quarter after Anthony inadvertently struck a nerve in the back of his neck. He returned to action in the second period. ... New York forward Rasheed Wallace missed Friday's game with a sore left foot. He is listed as day-to-day. ... The Rockets played without reserves Carlos Delfino (strained groin) and Cole Aldrich (sprained right ankle). ... Houston netted a season-high 35 points in the opening quarter and matched the franchise record for most points scored at Toyota Center. ... Anthony has led the Knicks in scoring in 10 of 11 contests this season. ... The Rockets won for the first time this season when connecting on fewer 3-pointers than their opponent. ... New York's 39 3-point attempts set the record for most attempted by a Houston opponent.
