The front offices of the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets conversed plenty during the Dwight Howard saga that lasted into August, though a trade agreement never was reached.

Each new-look squad is still finding its footing without him, but Orlando hopes the recent on-court history between the clubs remains in its favor.

The Magic seek their 11th straight victory over the Nets as both teams look to avoid a three-game losing streak Friday night at the Amway Center.

Numerous trades reportedly were proposed between Orlando and Brooklyn, which hoped to land Howard with a package centering around Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries and multiple draft picks.

But Brooklyn turned its attention to acquiring Joe Johnson from Atlanta while re-signing Lopez, Humphries, Gerald Wallace and Deron Williams in July, and the Magic wound up dealing Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a four-team trade with Philadelphia and Denver.

The Magic (2-2) won their first two games under new coach Jacque Vaughn, but fell 99-93 at Chicago on Tuesday before a 90-75 loss at Minnesota the next night.

Orlando shot a dismal 35.0 percent Wednesday, with J.J. Redick leading the team with 16 points off the bench. Arron Afflalo, who came over from Denver in the Howard deal, scored 12 points after netting 22 and 28, respectively, in the previous two games.

"I wish the rim would've opened up and that ball would've slid through it," Vaughn said. "That always helps.

"Our guys really put a lot of effort out in Chicago, and to be asked to do it again the next night is pretty tough. This is a team and we're going to need 1-15 this year."

Brooklyn (1-2) didn't do any better its last time out, falling 103-73 at Miami for its second consecutive loss after winning its opener. The Nets shot only 37.5 percent while going 3 for 21 from 3-point range.

"It was just an off-night because we had a lot of open looks," said Johnson, who finished 4 for 14 with nine points. "I know I did and I missed a few myself. Other than that it was just shots that we normally make that we didn't make."

Williams scored a team-high 14, but he committed seven turnovers - his most since also finishing with seven in a loss to Orlando on Feb. 22.

"We feel like this team shouldn't be losing by 30 to anybody, but it's a work in progress," Williams said. "We can all play better. I can definitely play better, take care of the ball better. We can all play better defensively, and we all know that.

"It's still early in the season. It's not time to start panicking. We told people it's going to take some time for us to come together, and it's looking that way still."

No matter who has been in uniform for either team, the Magic have dominated the Nets in recent seasons. Brooklyn hasn't scored more than 91 points during its 10-game losing streak in the series, and it hasn't won in Orlando since a 96-95 victory Jan. 2, 2008.

Williams, Lopez and Wallace missed the most recent meeting March 16, when Jameer Nelson's 13 points helped Orlando to an 86-70 win. Nelson, though, is questionable Friday after missing the last three games with groin and hamstring issues.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Brooklyn looked inside in its first game of the season against Orlando. With Dwight Howard no longer patrolling the paint for the Magic, it was a winning strategy.

Andray Blatche had 15 points, Brook Lopez added 14 points and 10 rebounds and the Nets beat the Magic 107-68 Friday night.

"It definitely was a focus," Lopez said of getting the ball inside. "Especially coming off that tough Miami game. We wanted to come out and just hit them right away."

Brooklyn never trailed while snapping a 10-game losing streak to Orlando that dated to 2009. It enjoyed a 46-30 edge in scoring in the paint against the Magic, who traded Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers in August.

It was exactly what the Nets needed after following up their season-opening victory with back-to-back losses, including a 30-point setback Wednesday against the defending champion Heat.

"I think for us, we had a lot of veteran players out there who really know how to play. And they know where their strengths and weaknesses are," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "A lot of things that we've been harping on about our offensive and defensive game - they executed."

E'Twaun Moore led the Magic with 18 points, and Arron Afflalo finished with 12.

It was Orlando's most lopsided loss of the post-Howard era and came on the heels of a 15-point blowout at Minnesota that was equally one-sided. Friday's loss was Orlando's second-worst home loss ever.

Injuries have certainly played a role, but coach Jacque Vaughn didn't use it as a crutch to explain his team's recent shortcomings.

"You have to be committed to execution," Vaughn said. "Not every other play, not every fourth play, but every single play. You have to cut hard every single play. You have to screen every single play for us to have success. And when they are not committed, it shows."

The Nets dominated inside, with Lopez and Blatche pushing around Orlando's young front line. They also got a lift from their bench, with Brooklyn's reserves outscoring their counterparts 55-18 for the game.

Orlando lost its third straight game after starting 2-0. It also tied a franchise-low with four made free throws, compared to 16 for Brooklyn.

No Magic starters attempted a free throw Friday.

"We've got a lot to work on, defensively being the main issue," Afflalo said. "But the good thing is that we play the same team on Sunday. So I think it will be a great chance for us to see if we can truly learn from tonight. ... Hopefully we grow from tonight."

The short-handed Nets played without swingman MarShon Brooks, who twisted an ankle during the morning shootaround. Johnson went deeper into his roster, giving veteran Jerry Stackhouse his first minutes of the season.

Stackhouse responded by scoring 11 first-half points to make up for slow starts by Joe Johnson and Deron Williams. He was shut out in the second half but the 11 points tied Stackhouse's highest scoring output from last season when he was with Atlanta.

Lopez also went to work early and often in the post, opposite a timid group of Magic big men. He scored 11 of the Nets' first 19 points as they built as much as a 16-point lead in the opening 24 minutes.

That lead passed 30 points early in the fourth quarter. The Nets also held a 48-35 rebounding edge for the night.

Meanwhile, the Magic didn't seem nearly as comfortable in their half-court sets at the outset and were hampered by careless turnovers.

Sixth-man J.J. Redick was visibly frustrated at times, barking at his younger teammates when they failed to move the ball swiftly enough during their offensive sets.

Orlando's remaining reserves also failed to provide a lift, collectively scoring just four points in the first half.

Sunday's game in Brooklyn will be their second of four meetings this season. It's also the start of a three-game homestand for the Nets

"Winning is the cure all," Stackhouse said. "Whatever is wrong with it, winning is the cure all. It is not as cold. ... We will even find some gas when we get home. If we lost tonight, we wouldn't be able to find some gas. I have a feeling we will find some gas.

"This is just how it goes."

NOTES: Magic PG Jameer Nelson sat for the fourth straight game with a strained right hamstring/groin. Vaughn said the team co-captain was "making positive steps in the right direction." Rookie F DeQuan Jones also rested with a groin strain. ... Nets F Gerald Wallace missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle.

THE FACTS: Centers Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche combined for 29 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Brooklyn Nets to a 107-68 rout of the Orlando Magic.

E'Twaun Moore scored a game-high 18 points for the Magic, who lost their third straight.

All 12 players scored for the Nets, who broke open a close game with 13 straight points early in the second half and handed the Magic their second-worst homecourt loss ever.

QUOTABLE: "I love it when you can really sit down and let the guys play that don't really play as much. That is exciting for me." -- Joe Johnson, who scored 13 points for the Nets in a team-high 29 minutes.

THE STAT: The Magic did not make a free throw until 5:41 remained in the game.

QUOTABLE II: "We had zero (free throw attempts) at halftime and they were the aggressors. Brooklyn showed a desire to fight and try to get a win." -- Magic coach Jacque Vaughn.

TURNING POINT: After the Magic scored the first seven points of the second half, Brooklyn led by only 50-43. Joe Johnson hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 20-2 Nets run over the next six minutes.

HOT: Jerry Stackhouse came off the Nets bench and nailed three 3-pointers in the second quarter. The 38-year-old swingman finished with 11 points to help Brooklyn break a two-game losing streak.

QUOTABLE: Winning in the cure-all. It's not as cold . . . we will even find some gas when we get home. If we lost tonight, we wouldn't be able to find some gas. That is just how it goes."-- Stackhouse.

NOT: No Magic starter got to the free throw line all night.

GOOD MOVE: The Nets exploited their inside advantage early, getting four of their first five baskets from center Lopez. Backup center Blatche scored four more baskets early in the second quarter.

QUOTABLE III: "The good thing is we play that team Sunday, so I think it will be a great chance to see if we can truly learn from tonight. The opportunity to play that exact same team on their floor Sunday will be a great thing for us." -- Magic guard Arron Afflalo.

BAD MOVE: Orlando's first timeout of the second half came after the Nets scored 11 straight point in just over two minutes. By then the Nets had an 18-point lead and it never got any smaller.

ROOKIE WATCH: Andrew Nicholson, the Magic's first-round draft choice, had 10 points and three rebounds. Mo Harkless, playing in only his second game for Orlando, played 21 scoreless minutes.

NOTABLE: The only home defeat in Magic history to be decided by a bigger margin was a 121-81 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Jan. 26, 1991, Orlando's second season in the NBA . . . The Nets broke their 10-game losing streak against the Magic and their 15-game losing streak in the state of Florida . . . The Nets were coming off a 30-point loss at Miami . . . The Nets played without MarShon Brooks, who turned his ankle in the morning shootaround.
